No big crowds, but plenty of cake

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A subdued Carnival season began Wednesday after the coronavirus pandemic put an end to the crowd-heavy balls and street parades that draw thousands of people to the city every year.

The Mardi Gras season always starts on Jan. 6 and ends on Fat Tuesday, which this year falls on Feb. 16. The season is usually marked by extravagant balls and parades where costumed riders throw trinkets to the mobs of people packed along the parade routes.

The coronavirus has put an end to those large events. But that has not stopped notoriously creative New Orleanians from coming up with socially distant ways to celebrate.

The Krewe de Jeanne d’Arc is a club that annually pays homage to the fallen French hero with a parade through the French Quarter on the official start of the Carnival season. This year, the krewe hosted a “Tableaux de Jeanne d’Arc,” where onlookers drove by various “tableaux” — a French term for “living pictures” — that included stations of costumed revelers sparring as knights, sharpening their swords and feasting at a grand fireplace with a pig roasting in the background.

“Life as usual is gone, so we had to look for different ways of doing things this year,” said Antoinette de Alteriis, one of the club’s captains.

The Phunny Phorty Phellows, a group that usually gathers Jan. 6 to mark the beginning of the season with a costumed party on a street car, also altered its plans. Usually throngs of people gather at the facility where the street car starts its journey to see the group off, but this year people were asked to disperse along the street car route and watch from there instead.

But people can still eat cake — king cake that is. The sweet cakes, which are decorated with the official Carnival colors of purple, green and gold, are only to be eaten starting on Jan.6.

In Mobile, Alabama, dozens of parades, balls and other events also have been canceled. The city on the Gulf of Mexico calls itself the birthplace of Mardi Gras since celebrations began there a few years earlier than in New Orleans.

Coastal Alabama typically begins its observances later in January than New Orleans, meaning the current coronavirus surge could be easing by the time events were set to start. But multiple organizations began announcing cancellations last month to protect the health of members and revelers.

Karim Benzema to face trial for alleged involvement in attempted blackmail case

Karim Benzema to face trial for alleged involvement in attempted blackmail case

Karim Benzema
Benzema was not selected by France in their squad for the 2018 World Cup, which they won in Russia

Karim Benzema will face trial for his alleged involvement in an attempted blackmail case linked to a sex tape featuring a former France team-mate.

Real Madrid forward Benzema is accused of paying individuals to extort money from Mathieu Valbuena by threatening to make the video public in 2015.

The 33-year-old French striker argues that a police officer used dishonest methods to draw him into the affair.

He has not played for his country since it came to light.

French prosecutors announced Benzema would face trial on Thursday, reported the AFP News Agency.

AFP also quoted Benzema’s lawyer, Sylvain Cormier, as saying he was not surprised the matter was going to trial, but that the decision was “as absurd as it was predictable”.

Benzema has scored 261 goals for Real since joining the Spanish side in 2009.

He and Valbuena were international team-mates at the time of the affair and were in the France squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Valbuena, 36, was playing for Lyon at the time but is now with Greek side Olympiakos.

Capitol has seen violence over 220 years, but not like this

In more than 220 years, the U.S. Capitol had seen nothing like it: a roiling mob, forcing its way past its majestic marble columns, disrupting the passage of power, desecrating the seat of the world’s greatest democracy.

But this was far from the first time the Capitol has been scarred by violence.

In 1814, just 14 years after the building opened, British forces in the War of 1812 tried to burn it down. The invaders looted the building first, and then set the southern and northern wings ablaze — incinerating the Library of Congress. A sudden rainstorm prevented its total destruction, but the building was left “a most magnificent ruin,” according to architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe.

Over the centuries since, events have made a mockery of the inscription on the rostrum of the House chamber — “Union, Justice, Tolerance, Liberty, Peace.” The building has been bombed several times. There have been shootings. One legislator almost killed another.

The most famous episode occurred in 1954, when four Puerto Rican nationalists unfurled the island’s flag and, shouting “Freedom for Puerto Rico,” unleashed a barrage of about 30 shots from the visitor’s gallery of the House. Five congressmen were injured, one of them seriously.

“I did not come to kill anyone, I came to die for Puerto Rico!” cried the leader, Lolita Lebron, when she and the others were arrested.

Before and since, the building has been a target. In 1915, a German man planted three sticks of dynamite in the Senate reception room; it went off shortly before midnight, when no one was around.

The bomber — who had previously murdered his pregnant wife by poisoning, and would go on to shoot financier J.P. Morgan Jr,. and bomb a steamship loaded with munitions bound for Britain — killed himself before he could be arrested.

More recently, the Weather Underground set off an explosive in 1971 to protest the U.S. bombing of Laos, and the May 19th Communist Movement bombed the Senate in 1983 in response to the invasion of Grenada. Neither caused any deaths or injuries, but both resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage and led to tougher security measures.

The most deadly attack on the Capitol occurred in 1998, when a mentally ill man fired at a checkpoint and killed two Capitol Police officers. One of the dying officers managed to wound the gunman, who was arrested and later institutionalized. A nearby statue of Vice President John C. Calhoun still bears a bullet mark from the incident.

In 2013, a dental hygienist with her 18-month-old daughter in tow tried to drive onto the White House grounds, and was chased to the Capitol, where she was shot to death by police.

There have been other, storied attacks. In 1835, a deranged house painter tried to shoot two pistols at President Andrew Jackson outside the building; the guns misfired, and Jackson caned his assailant into submission.

And famously, in 1856, Rep. Preston Brooks attacked abolitionist Senator Charles Sumner with his cane on the floor of the Senate after the senator gave a speech criticizing slavery.

Sumner was beaten so badly that three years passed before he had sufficiently recovered to return to Congress. The House failed to expel Brooks, but he resigned — and was immediately reelected.

Fans of H.G. Wells Cry Foul Over Errors in Commemorative Coin

Fans of H.G. Wells Cry Foul Over Errors in Commemorative Coin

The idea was to create a commemorative coin to celebrate the work of H.G. Wells, the British writer, historian and sociologist best known for the novels “The War of the Worlds” and “The Invisible Man.”

But the two-pound coin that the Royal Mint in Britain unveiled this week has irked some fans of Wells who quickly spotted what they described as flaws and botched imagery in the coin’s design, which was inspired by the author’s books.

For instance, the Martian machine that Wells described in “The War of the Worlds” as “a monstrous tripod, higher than many houses,” appears to have four legs instead of three. And the image of the invisible man on the coin has the character wearing a top hat and not the “wide-brimmed hat” that Wells described in his book.

The errors, and the response from Wells aficionados, were reported by The Guardian.

“Can I just note that the big walking machine on the coin has four legs? Four legs,” Holly Humphries, a digital artist, said on Twitter.

Ms. Humphries, of Oxfordshire, England, said she noticed the mistake on Monday, the day the coin was announced by the Royal Mint, when she read about it in an online forum devoted to “The War of the Worlds.”

“The tripod is an iconic, famous thing in fiction for over 120 years now,” she said in an interview on Tuesday, “and to make that mistake shows an incredible lack of familiarity with the work, especially when you’re trying to honor the writer with such a coin.”

Patrick Parrinder, the president of the H.G. Wells Society in London and an author who has written about Wells, also spotted the mistake.

“Three legs good, four legs bad,” Mr. Parrinder said of the tripod. “It’s a shame that the artist didn’t pick that out.”

Adam Roberts, a vice president of the Wells Society and a professor at Royal Holloway, University of London, said on Twitter, “Not only did Wells’ Tripods have *three* legs, Griffin, his invisible man, does not wear a top hat.” The character’s face, he added, was bandaged under a “wide-brimmed hat.”

“So it’s two for two,” he said.

Wells, who was considered an outstanding literary figure of his time, is best known for his science fiction novels, some of which have been adapted into movies. He died in 1946 at the age of 79.

In announcing the coin, The Royal Mint said it was “celebrating the imagination and enquiring mind of a man who helped shaped the world we live in.”

A spokeswoman for the Royal Mint said in a statement on Wednesday that it “works with leading designers around the world to create art on the unique canvas of a coin.”

“We encourage them to be creative and distinct in their response to the brief,” she said. “When developing a design for the H.G. Wells coin, we asked artists to consider his life and his work, ensuring the coin would be instantly recognizable and make best use of the space on a £2.”

The coin was designed by Chris Costello, a Boston-based graphic designer and illustrator. It depicts the four-legged alien machine with the invisible man in the foreground. The coin’s visuals also include a partial Roman numeral clock, a nod to “The Time Machine,” Mr. Costello said on his website.

“The characters in War of the Worlds have been depicted many times, and I wanted to create something original and contemporary,” Mr. Costello said in a statement that was released by the Royal Mint. “My design takes inspiration from a variety of machines featured in the book — including tripods and the handling machines which have five jointed legs and multiple appendages.”

He added that “the final design combines multiple stories into one stylized and unified composition that is emblematic” of Wells’s work “and fits the unique canvas of a coin.”

On his website, Mr. Costello also said that he used a top hat because it “was easily recognized as Victorian-era in contrast to the futuristic machine in the background.”

The coin, which has an image of Queen Elizabeth II in profile on the other side, will be issued later this year, 75 years after Wells’s death, the Royal Mint said on Tuesday. It is part of the Royal Mint’s annual set, a collection of coins noting anniversaries in 2021, including the queen’s 95th birthday.

60 Times People Wanted Attention On Social Media So Bad, They Resorted To Doing Horrible Things

What’s social media all about? Keeping in touch with your family and friends, as well as making new connections, right? Well, it should be. But just like the internet, social media is a rusty double-edged sword laced with toxic goo—far from everything is as wholesome as the cat pictures you’ll find on Bored Panda.

Most people want to be loved, adored, and to be in the spotlight. In short, they want attention and adoration. Unfortunately, a sizeable chunk of humankind is prepared to do anything for that, morals, common sense, and decency be damned.

From acting plain idiotic to doing some downright immoral stuff that would make the local priest splash them with holy water, the people who are prepared to go to extreme lengths just for internet fame end up on the r/justforsocialmedia subreddit. Check out the best of the worst below, upvote the ones that impressed you with their awfulness the most, and share any similar stories in the comment section.

Bored Panda spoke about why some people tend to do pretty much anything for a splash of fame with redditor Blank-Cheque, one of the moderators at the ‘Just For Social Media’ subreddit. According to them, the internet is a contributing factor in hunting for attention. “I’d say a lot of these people would’ve done stupid stuff anyway, but the internet gives them extra incentive and lets them share it with others.” Scroll down for their other insights.

Protesters swarm Statehouses across US; some evacuated

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Protesters backing President Donald Trump massed outside statehouses from Georgia to New Mexico on Wednesday, leading some officials to evacuate while cheers rang out at several demonstrations as a pro-Trump mob stormed the U.S. Capitol.

Hundreds of people gathered in state capitals nationwide to oppose President-elect Joe Biden’s win, waving signs saying “Stop the steal” and “Four more years.” Most of them didn’t wear masks amid the coronavirus pandemic, and some carried guns in places like Oklahoma, Georgia, Arizona, Nevada and Washington state.

There were some scuffles in states like Ohio and California, with some instances of journalists or counterprotesters being pepper-sprayed or punched, but most demonstrations were peaceful — some of them quite small — and only a few arrests were reported.

New Mexico police evacuated staff as a precaution from a Statehouse building that includes the governor’s office and the secretary of state’s office, shortly after hundreds of flag-waving supporters arrived in a vehicle caravan and on horseback.

Demonstrators sang “God Bless America,” honked horns and wrongly announced on a megaphone that Trump was the rightful election winner — though Biden won the vote in New Mexico by a margin of roughly 11%.

“It’s the first time in the history of the United States that the peaceful transfer of power has been slowed by an act of violence,¨ Democratic House Speaker Brian Egolf said. “It is a shameful moment, and I hope that the Congress can recover soon.”

Violent protests in Washington, D.C., came as Congress tried to affirm Biden’s Electoral College victory. News that protesters had breached the U.S. Capitol set off cheers at pro-Trump protests in Minnesota, Nevada and Arizona, where armed protesters marched at the Capitol in Phoenix and several men displayed a guillotine.

Georgia’s secretary of state and his staff evacuated their offices at the Capitol as about 100 protesters gathered outside, some armed with long guns.

Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and his team decided to leave, according to Gabriel Sterling, a top official with Raffensperger’s office.

“We saw stuff happening at the Georgia Capitol and said we should not be around here, we should not be a spark,” Sterling told The Associated Press.

Trump has focused much of his ire on Raffensperger in the weeks following his loss by about 12,000 votes.

Republican Gov. Brian Kemp slammed the storming of the U.S. Capitol, calling it “a disgrace and quite honestly un-American.” Kemp said he was extending an executive order from protests over the summer activating the National Guard in case they are needed to protect the state Capitol on Monday when the legislative session begins.

In Washington state, protesters broke through a gate at the governor’s mansion and dozens of people gathered on the lawn for about 30 minutes before being cleared from the area. The crowd, some of whom were armed, repeated baseless allegations of election fraud. The State Patrol said that Gov. Jay Inslee “and his family are in a safe location.”

Earlier, dozens of people gathered at the state Capitol, demanding a recount of the U.S. presidential election and Washington’s gubernatorial election, which Inslee, a Democrat, won by more than 500,000 votes. The Statehouse has been closed to the public for nearly a year due to the pandemic.

In Utah, the staff of Gov. Spencer Cox was sent home as several hundred people gathered in Salt Lake City, Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson tweeted. Salt Lake Tribune photographer Rick Egan said he was pepper-sprayed by a demonstrator who taunted him for wearing a mask and shoved him as he was shooting video of the protest. It wasn’t immediately clear if anyone was arrested.

At least one person was arrested at the Oregon Capitol in Salem on suspicion of harassment and disorderly conduct as police in riot gear tried to get people — many of them armed — to leave.

Video showed protesters and counterprotesters clashing and riot police moving in. But by midafternoon, only a few dozen people remained, their American flags and Trump banners drooping in the rain.

In Topeka, Kansas, chants of “Stop the steal” and “No more masks” faded as a rally ended and Trump supporters filed peacefully into the Statehouse building through security checkpoints, milling around historical exhibits.

In Honolulu, about 100 protesters lined the road outside the state Capitol waving American and Trump 2020 flags at passing cars. Sheryl Bieler, a retiree in the blue state, said she came out to “support our president and support the integrity of the elections.”

Trump supporters circled the state Capitol building in Madison, Wisconsin, in cars and trucks adorned with Trump and U.S. flags for several hours Wednesday, blaring their horns.

In Colorado, Denver Mayor Michael Hancock ordered city agencies to close buildings after hundreds gathered in front of the Capitol building for a protest against the election results.

In South Carolina, protesters supporting Trump came to the Statehouse but left before the U.S. Capitol was breached.

Rioters clash with police trying to enter Capitol building through the front doors - 6 January 2021

The US is reeling after supporters of President Trump stormed the Capitol building in Washington DC on the day Congress was meeting to confirm Joe Biden’s election victory.

Lawmakers were forced to take shelter, the building was put into lockdown and four people died in the chaos that followed a pro-Trump rally near the White House.

Here’s a breakdown of how events unfolded on Wednesday.

Trump rallies supporters

Just before midday local time (17:00 GMT) thousands of people gather at the Ellipse, near the White House, to hear the president speak at a “Save America” rally.

He tells them: “We’re going to walk down Pennsylvania Avenue… and we’re going to the Capitol and we’re going to try and give… our Republicans, the weak ones… the kind of pride and boldness that they need to take back our country.”

As the speech ends, crowds start to drift towards the Congress building, about a mile and a half away, where they are met by police barriers.

Clashes begin outside Capitol

Chanting crowds start to gather on both sides of the Capitol at around 13:10, grappling with police at the metal barricades.

Tear gas and pepper spray are used to try to keep the protesters at bay.

Crowds break police lines

Police officers struggle to maintain control of the situation as protesters advance on the building on multiple fronts.

On the east side, the crowd force their way through barricades on the Capitol Plaza and move on the main entrance, quickly gaining access to the Great Rotunda.

Once inside, they head for the House and Senate chambers.

Igor Bobic, a journalist for the Huffington Post, captures a group of men forcing a police officer to retreat up a set of stairs as they continue their advance.

Senators are forced to abandon the process of confirming President-elect Biden’s victory and the building goes into lockdown.

The doors of the House chamber are locked and a makeshift barricade is erected in front of them. Security officials guard the entrance, guns drawn.

Within an hour, protesters have also broken police lines on the west side of the Capitol, scaling walls to reach the building itself before smashing windows and forcing doors open.

Other videos and images show rioters storming through the building’s ornately-decorated corridors and chambers chanting “USA!” and “Stop the steal”.

Shots fired

Shortly before 15:00, gunshots are reportedly heard inside the building.

Photos and video footage later show a female protester being shot as she tries to break through the barricaded doors of the Speakers’ Lobby.

Despite efforts by police and others at the scene to save her, she is later reported to have died.

On the other side of the building, protesters break into the Senate chamber, one taking seat in the Speaker’s chair.

Another protester is photographed nearby sitting in Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office, with his foot on the table.

Building secured

After growing condemnation of the riots, President Trump eventually calls for calm, telling the protesters to leave peacefully: “Go home. We love you, you’re very special.”

By 17:40, the building is cleared and made secure ahead of the 18:00 curfew ordered by DC Mayor Muriel Bowser.

Several thousand National Guard troops, FBI agents and US Secret Service are deployed to help.

More than six hours after the storming of the building, senators return and resume the day’s business of certifying the results of the 2020 presidential election.

At 03:41 on Thursday, Congress confirms President-elect Joe Biden will succeed President Trump on 20 January.

70-Year-Old Film Roll Containing A Couple’s Vacation Pics Sparks A Global Hunt

In 2015, Irish camera collector William Fagan bought a Leica III camera that dates back to 1935. He got the vintage camera with film, protected in a Leica FILCA cassette, which Fagan set aside and revisited only this summer.

When he finally developed it, however, the images came out really good. No wonder—Fagan took the 70-year-old Perutz film to Mella Travers, who owns The Darkroom in Dublin, and the two carefully worked on the film through a one-hour stand process with a diluted developer.

But this wasn’t the end of the adventure; it was just beginning. The 22 shots were trying to tell a story of a glamorous young woman and an older gentleman in what appeared to be their journey through Europe.

Fagan said the photos were so personal, his initial instincts were saying he shouldn’t be looking at them. It was like peeking into a stranger’s family photo album. Or their memories. But the man couldn’t shake one thought: what if he could track down the family of the couple in the images? He estimates the shots date back to the early 1950s, so the couple—if they were still alive—would have to be quite elderly.

28 OBVIOUS LIFE HACKS THEY DIDN’T TELL YOU ABOUT

28 OBVIOUS LIFE HACKS THEY DIDN’T TELL YOU ABOUT

You, Will, Learn The New Lifehack that could help you in a more critical stage view and share the article with your friends.

UNEXPECTED TRICKS YOU WOULDN’T BELIEVE EXIST

We keep learning new life-hacks every day through difficult situations. So, in this video, I show you my most helpful ones you’ve never seen before.
When eating sushi and you want to dip your roll in some soy sauce, always hold it with your chopstick’s upside down – this will prevent the rice from falling in the sauce.
Instead of applying butter on your toast with a knife, simply grate it on top instead. It will distribute there even better and it will melt right away.
To get the most out of your avocado when putting in your salad. Don’t cut it in tubes, instead, cut it diagonally. This way you’ll also get more pieces.
You can use an old tissue box, dress it up with some colorful wrapping paper and then place plastic disposable bags inside to keep them organized. Every time you go shopping you can then pull one out and voila.
Another great organization hack is to take old cereal containers and use them to organize your drawers.
For those times that you need a pillow but can’t find one, I show you how to create your own by folding a thick bedding.
Another great lifehack is to run some plastic straws through a sharpener in order to organize your office cables.

Shonda Rimes’ ‘Bridgerton’ Fashion Is Making A Comeback In 2021

Shonda Rimes’ ‘Bridgerton’ Fashion Is Making A Comeback In 2021

“Bridgerton’ is a period drama created by Chris Van Dusen and produced by Shonda Rhimes based on a series of novels written by Julia Quinn. The show follows the eight siblings of the Bridgerton family as they attempt to find love and happiness in London high society.

Since its release, Bridgerton has taken the world by storm and has left every viewer talking about it. While fans of the show have been left with a lot to discuss, one of the conversations I hear most frequently is about fashion. Fans can’t get enough of the shows regal and vintage fashion. So much so that this new interest in fashion from this era has been dubbed as “Regencycore.” As the popularity of this show and similar shows only continues to grow, I suspect to see this trend only continue to grow throughout the next year. So here is how I think Bridgerton and Regencycore style will affect fashion trends in 2021.

1. Corset tops

Netflix

Over the years, corset tops have started to make a comeback. It started slow but began gaining popularity in 2019 when women viewed them as a way to accentuate their figure. Now it is one of the best ways to achieve a vintage look with a modern twist. Personally, I think vibrant corset tops will be all the rage as we get into the spring months.

2. Puff sleeves

Netflix

Throughout 2020, puff sleeves were a major trend and I think it will remain pretty popular throughout the next year. I’ve already seen a lot of women rock a puff sleeve corset detail top this year. Honestly, this trend is a hit with me and I really hope it sticks around.

3. Floral

Netflix

Floral is a trend that is constantly coming and going. You really can’t ever get rid of it. For the spring, I think floral is going to be a staple in fashion in order to help achieve the vintage aesthetic that many want to achieve.

4. Midi Dresses

Netflix

This spring, I think midi dresses are going to be another great way for individuals to achieve a vintage aesthetic. The reason I think that midi dresses will be so popular is that is it is a great way you can combine some of the other trends as well. There are so many cute midi dresses that also combine florals or a puff sleeve. There’s also something very elegant and whimsical about this style of dress that I think a lot of people will like.

5. All of the accessories

Netflix

In Bridgerton, the women are known to over-accessorize. In order to achieve this look, I see a move less towards dainty jewelry and back towards statement pieces. I also see headpieces such as headbands, ribbons, and maybe even flower crowns coming back. That will really depend on how people decide to style it. Finally, in accessories, I’ve read a lot about gloves. Personally, I am not really interested in gloves but I know a lot of people are feeling inspired to bring gloves back in fashion.

A Shattering Blow to America’s Troubled Democratic Image

A Shattering Blow to America’s Troubled Democratic Image

PARIS — The choreography was unusual: President Emmanuel Macron of France, standing before the Stars and Stripes, declaring in English that “We believe in the strength of our democracies. We believe in the strength of American democracy.”

And so the presidency of Donald Trump draws to a close with a French leader obliged to declare his faith in the resilience of American democracy, a remarkable development. Mr. Macron’s wider point was clear enough: The mob of Trump loyalists in Washington attempting to disrupt the peaceful transition of American power also posed a threat to all democracies.

The reputation of the United States may be tarnished, but its identification with the global defense of democracy remains singular. So, when an angry horde, incited by President Trump himself, was seen taking over the Capitol, defiling its sacred chambers with swaggering contempt as lawmakers gathered to certify President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s victory, the fragility of freedom felt palpable in Paris and across the world.

“A universal idea — that of ‘one person, one vote’ — is undermined,” Mr. Macron said in an address than began in French and ended in English. It was the “temple of American democracy” that had been attacked.

The institutions of democracy prevailed in the early hours of the following morning, but the images of mob rule in Washington touched a particular nerve in fractured Western societies. They have been confronted with the emergence of an illiberal authoritarian model in Hungary and Poland, and the rise of rightist political forces from Italy to Germany. They have also faced the truculence of leaders like President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, who has declared liberalism “obsolete,” or Xi Jinping, China’s top leader, who has offered his country’s surveillance-state model to the world as he crushed democratic protest in Hong Kong.

“For European societies, these were shattering images,” said Jacques Rupnik, a political scientist. “Even if America was no longer the beacon on a hill, it was still the pillar that sustained European democracy and extended it eastward after the Cold War.”

Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany said she was “angry and sad.” She blamed Mr. Trump unequivocally for the storming of the Capitol that left one woman dead. “Doubts about the election outcome were stoked and created the atmosphere that made the events of last night possible,” she said.

Germans, for whom the United States was postwar savior, protector and liberal democratic model, have observed Mr. Trump’s attempts to subvert the democratic process and rule of law with particular dismay.

Their anxiety has been accentuated in recent years because the fraying of democracy through polarization, violence, social breakdown and economic hardship has not been confined to the United States. The coronavirus pandemic has sharpened anxieties and mistrust of government. In this context, the mob stampeding through the Capitol seemed to reflect disruptive forces lurking in many parts of the Western world.

If it could happen at democracy’s heart, it could happen anywhere.

Last year, as battles over racial justice raged in several American cities, the German weekly magazine Der Spiegel portrayed Mr. Trump in the Oval Office with a lighted match and called him “Der Feuerteufel,” or literally, “The Fire Devil.”

The message was clear: The American president was playing with fire. This could only stir German memories of the Reichstag fire of 1933 that enabled Hitler and the Nazis to scrap the fragile Weimar democracy that brought them to power.

Painful memory has not been confined to Germany. Throughout much of Europe — a continent where totalitarian rule is not some distant specter, but something people alive today have lived — Mr. Trump’s attacks on an independent judiciary, a free press and the sanctity of the ballot were long seen as ominous.

Ms. Merkel herself started life in Communist East Germany. She has watched as the post-1989 euphoria over the inevitability of a free democratic world has evaporated, deflated by the rise of authoritarian governments. Mr. Trump, attacking foundations of that world like NATO or the European Union, often appeared to want to tilt the world in the same illiberal direction.

He has been defeated. American institutions have withstood the mayhem. Mr. Biden’s victory was duly certified by Congress once order was restored.

Vice President Mike Pence, whom Mr. Trump had tried to enlist in his effort to overturn the November election result, affirmed Mr. Biden as the winner. Mr. Trump issued a statement saying, for the first time, that there will be “an orderly transition on January 20th.” Two victories in Senate races in Georgia ensured that Democrats will control the Senate, a stinging final rebuke to Mr. Trump that opens the way for the new president to pursue his agenda.

So, all is well after all? Not really. The American idea and American values — democracy, the rule of law, the defense of human rights — have suffered a sustained assault during Mr. Trump’s presidency. Mr. Rupnik suggested it would be “very difficult” for Mr. Biden to project America as “the convener of a community of democracies,” an idea the incoming administration has aired to signal a return to America’s core principles.

For some time, the rest of the world will look on the United States with skepticism when it seeks to promote democratic values. The images of the overrun Capitol will be there, for those who want to use them, to make the point that America would be best advised to avoid giving lessons in the exercise of freedom. Dictators of the hard and soft variety have new and potent ammunition.

“Democracy Fractured,” was the banner headline in the French daily Le Figaro, above a photograph of the Capitol under siege. An editorial suggested that Mr. Trump might have left office with “a contested but not negligible balance sheet.” Instead, “his narcissism having overcome any dignity, he manhandled institutions, trampled on democracy, divided his own camp and ends his presidency in a ditch.”

There were signs that Mr. Trump’s magnetism is already ebbing. The Czech prime minister, Andrej Babis, a supporter of Mr. Trump, promptly changed his Twitter profile picture from one showing him wearing a MAGA-style red baseball cap with the words ‘Silné Česko’ (Strong Czech Republic), to one that shows him wearing a face mask with the Czech flag.

The Washington turmoil illustrated in the end that the United States is bigger than one man, a point Mr. Macron seemed intent on making. He alluded to joint American and French support for freedom and democracy since the 18th century. He mentioned Alexis de Tocqueville’s praise of American democracy. He spoke of American defense of French freedom during two World Wars.

Mr. Macron’s message seemed clear. The America of “We the People,” the America that held it self-evident at its creation that “all men are created equal,” was still needed, and urgently, for “our common struggle to ensure that our democracies emerge from this moment that we are all living through even stronger.”

Lava spatters, flows inside crater of Hawaii volcano

HONOLULU (AP) — Lava spattered and flowed over the weekend inside the crater of a Hawaii volcano that began erupting in December.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said the lava is confined to the summit crater of Kilauea, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Sunday.

The eruption began Dec. 20 within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island. The observatory said there was no data to indicate magma is moving into either of Kilauea’s rift zones — areas where the volcano is splitting apart.

Vents on the northwest side of the crater spattered Saturday while erupting lava flowed through crusted-over channels into a lava lake that has formed in the crater.

The lake was about a tenth of a square mile and about 620 feet (189 meters) deep, with a narrow black ledge surrounding the area, the observatory said.

A small island of cooler, solidified lava floated in the lava lake, rising about 20 feet (6 meters) above the surface, scientists said.

A report by the observatory in the Hawaii Herald-Tribune on Sunday said the primary hazard from the eruption is volcanic air pollution produced by the gases emitted at the summit.

The lava lake would need to rise about 262 feet (80 meters) before reaching a level that could be visible to the public from Kilauea Overlook in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the observatory said.

The volcano had not erupted since 2018, when lava spewed from vents in the middle of a neighborhood and destroyed roughly 700 houses.

Capitol riots: Has the US legislature been attacked before?

Trump supporters storm Capitol

Images of rioters storming the US Capitol in a bid to overturn the result of a democratic election have sent shockwaves around the world.

Four people died during the attack, launched by supporters of President Trump after he addressed a rally in Washington.

President-elect Joe Biden called it an “insurrection”, while Vice-President Mike Pence said the violence had been a “dark day in the history of the United States Capitol”.

But this is not the first time the building – regarded as the symbolic heart of US democracy – has been hit by violence.

From bombs to foreign invasions, here are four other times the Capitol was attacked.

British forces try to burn it down – 1814

Perhaps the most famous attack was by British forces during the War of 1812.

British troops, led by Vice Admiral Sir Alexander Cockburn and Major General Robert Ross – set fire to the still-under-construction Capitol after invading Washington DC in August 1814 (though the building survived thanks to a downpour).

In retaliation for the Americans’ burning of Upper Canada’s capital at York a year earlier, the British troops also set fire to other parts of the city and key buildings, including the White House.

The 1814 attack marks the only time that a foreign power has captured and occupied Washington.

In 2014, the British embassy in Washington apologised after tweeting a picture of a White House cake surrounded by sparklers, “commemorating” the burning of the building 200 years before.

Fourth of July dynamite attack- 1915

A century on from the British attack, Erich Muenter, former professor of German at Harvard University, exploded three sticks of dynamite in the Senate reception room.

The explosion damaged the building, but nobody was killed.

Muenter later said the attack was in response to American financiers aiding Britain against Germany in World War I.

media captionWhen a mob stormed the US capitol

Writing under a pseudonym in the Washington Evening Star, Muenter said he hoped the attack would “make enough noise to be heard above the voices that clamour for war”, adding: “This explosion is an exclamation point in my appeal for peace.”

A day after the attack, Muenter shot and injured financier JP Morgan Jr, before being subdued by Morgan’s butler and arrested. He later took his own life.

Attack by Puerto Rican nationalists – 1954

On 1 March 1954, four Puerto Rican nationalists pulled out the island’s flag and shouted “Freedom for Puerto Rico” as they opened fire from the visitor’s gallery of the House of Representatives, injuring five congressman.

“I did not come to kill anyone, I came to die for Puerto Rico!” cried the leader, Lolita Lebron, during her arrest.

image caption‘I came to die for Puerto Rico!’ cried Lolita Lebron, left

Lebron was sentenced to 50 years behind bars, while the three men were given 75 years.

The sentences were all later commuted by President Jimmy Carter. His administration said the release “would be a significant humanitarian gesture and would be viewed as such by much of the international community”.

The group returned to cheering crowds in Puerto Rico.

‘Resistance Conspiracy’ bomb – 1983

On 7 November 1983, an explosion ripped through the second floor of the Senate.

Just minutes before the explosion, someone claiming to be from a group named the Armed Resistance Unit called a Capitol switchboard warning of a pending attack, saying it was in retaliation for US military actions in Grenada and Lebanon.

image captionPolice cars outside the Capitol after the 1983 attack

There were no casualties but there was some costly damage.

In 1988, FBI agents arrested seven members of the radical-left Resistance Conspiracy group for the Capitol attack and separate blasts at Fort McNair and the Washington Navy Yard in 1983 and 1984.

Linda Evans and Laura Whitehorn were jailed for conspiracy and malicious destruction of government property in 1991. Both are now free.

Remorseful man returns statue’s stolen sword after 40 years

WESTFIELD, Mass. (AP) — A veteran returned a sword he stole from a statue of a Revolutionary War general 40 years ago, telling the head of the Massachusetts town’s historical commission that he regretted taking it.

Cindy P. Gaylord, the chair of Westfield’s Historical Commission, said a man contacted the city hall saying he had the sword stolen from the town’s statue of Gen. William Shepard in 1980, the Springfield Republican reported on Sunday.

Gaylord agreed to give the man anonymity if he returned the bronze sword and arranged for him and his wife to drop it off at her home, she said.

“He had a great deal of shame and remorse,” Gaylord told the newspaper. “He is a veteran and told me the fact that he did this to another soldier troubled him. He wants the story printed to remind people that something you do in your youth could haunt you for the rest of your life.”

The man, who Gaylord described as a “great big bear of a guy,” told her he had worked at a bar in the town while he was enrolled as a student at Westfield State University. After a night of drinking, he and a group of friends went to steal the sword, which he said he wrenched loose with just his own strength. When they realized what they had done the next morning, they were not sure how to return the sword without facing consequences.

The stolen sword was replaced with the help of a local sculptor and paid for by an anonymous donor, the newspaper reported. The returned sword is likely to be preserved by a local museum, the newspaper reported.

Shepard was born in the area in the 1730s and fought as a militia man and solider in multiple wars, including the Revolutionary War. The town erected the bronze statue of him in 1919, the newspaper reported.
