The next compilation will show you some etiquette mistakes you should avoid. You will learn how to behave in public, how to get out of a car, how to behave in the restaurant. Certainly, everybody should learn these rules to avoid mistakes in social and professional situations. One of the most important moments is how to behave with your boyfriend in public. If you are a girl, you should always carry your own bag and you should keep your romantic feelings as private as possible. Romantic evenings are the best time to display your affection, not in public.
We share a list of important table manners you should know by heart:
-Always eat spaghetti using both a fork and a spoon
-Don’t forget to remove a tea bag from a cup and place it on the side of your plate
-Always fill the glass of wine below the middle to allow the wine to breathe inside the glass
-When you are having lunch with your friend always leave your phone in the bag, as it is considered rude if the phone is on, the table. You should always give the person you are having a meeting with your attention
-Always remember that you shouldn’t put your elbows on the table

Pakistan Jails Gulalai Ismail’s Father After Failing to Catch Her

Pakistan Jails Gulalai Ismail’s Father After Failing to Catch Her

The Pakistani Taliban, the country’s most active banned terrorist group, has claimed responsibility for both attacks.

Throughout the past six months, Ms. Ismail’s parents have shuffled in and out of court, even as Mr. Ismail’s health began to fail. “I have fever, throat infection, cough, headache and high blood pressure but have to stand in High Court Peshawar,” he texted in late November.

A few days later, he and his wife tested positive for Covid-19.

“The puppet courts are responsible for our sufferings,” he said in another message.

In contemporary Pakistan, there has been little room for political dissent. Former leaders have been jailed or hounded out. Prime Minister Imran Khan, once an internationally famous cricket star, is widely seen as being under the thumb of the military establishment, which has been running shadow wars for years, alternately working with or against various militant groups, including the Afghan Taliban insurgency.

In this atmosphere, many human rights activists have disappeared into the hands of the security services while well-known terrorists move around untouched.

“In Pakistan, banned terrorist outfits are in fact not banned and roam freely,” said Afrasiab Khattak, a veteran politician and a former member of Parliament. “But people who always raised voices against banned outfits for their barbarism have been punished in baseless cases.”

Just last week, in fact, Pakistan’s highest court ordered the release of Ahmed Omar Sheikh, a British national and militant, who had been convicted of being the mastermind behind the 2002 kidnapping and beheading of Daniel Pearl, a celebrated Wall Street Journal reporter. Many countries, including the United States, had been exerting enormous pressure on Pakistan to keep Mr. Sheikh in jail.

37 Comics With Weird And Unexpected Endings By Tony Esp (New Pics)

In a previous post, comic artist and animator Tony esp said he creates random comics that range from puns and silly jokes to twisted comics that make you think “wait… what?” after reading them. These comics are packed with ridiculous and unexpected endings, so even if you look at it as a guessing game, think you have it figured out, and try to pinpoint how they’ll end—it’s nearly impossible, as these short stories are one-of-a-kind and could go so many unpredictable ways. But one thing is guaranteed—these webcomics will definitely entertain you in these uncertain and lonely times if you are into darker humor.

“My comics are… weird even for me. It can go from wholesome family content to alien sex and horror in an instant. If I had to describe them, I would say: WTF,” Tony esp described his comics to Bored Panda and it’s nothing but intriguing. So dive into the bizarre and funny mind of Tony esp expressed through the best of his comics and read what the artist is really about in the interview below!

Puerto Rico to get billions for storm aid, reconstruction

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Puerto Rico is slated to receive more than $6 billion in federal funds to help prepare the U.S. territory for future hurricanes and other disasters, officials said Tuesday.

The money assigned by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development would be used for infrastructure projects and economic development, among other things, Gov. Pedro Pierluisi said.

In addition, Puerto Rico now has access to $3.2 billion to continue rebuilding from hurricanes Irma and Maria, said Pierluisi, who praised the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden for acting quickly.

Congress had assigned $67 billion to help with reconstruction efforts after the hurricanes devastated the island in September 2017, but of the $43 billion obligated, Puerto Rico has only received $18 billion amid concerns over how the money would be spent.

UNICEF to Receive 1.1 Billion Coronavirus Vaccine Doses

Henrietta Fore, the executive director of UNICEF, said the organization and its partners will have access to up to 1.1. billion Covid-19 vaccine does to distribute in 100 countries for approximately $3 a dose.

UNICEF, along with our procurement partners, including PAHO, will have access to up to 1.1 billion doses of vaccines for around 100 countries for approximately $3 a dose for the low and lower-middle income countries. We must get this right. Many of these doses will go to health workers in urban areas who are at highest risk of exposure to Covid-19 infections. This work has already begun, for example, in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It’s one of the countries that will be an early recipient of the Pfizer vaccine, which requires the ultracal chain storage. UNICEF is providing Bosnia and Herzegovina with eight refrigerators that will be able to store vaccines in temperatures as low as minus 80 degrees Celsius.

“This Was The Best Investment I Have Made”: Late Piano Teacher’s House Turns Out To Be A Hoarder House With 400K Worth Of Treasures

“Hi! I’m Alex Archbold, and I’ve been buying and selling antiques since I was 9 years old. From basements to scrapyards, I’ll look just about anywhere I can to find lost antiques and collectables,” the antique hunter from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, says during the intro of his YouTube channel.

“Sometimes I’ll go big and buy everything,” says Alex, and that’s exactly what he recently did by purchasing all the contents of the house that belonged to a late piano teacher, Bette-Joan Rac.

“Growing up with little money and facing bouts of homelessness as a child, finding little treasures to resell helped bring in extra money, and fed my passion for learning about history,” Alex told Bored Panda. “My wife and I opened an antique shop almost 5 years ago in Edmonton Alberta Canada called Curiosity Inc. I carry a wide range of products, but we always look for the cool, unique, and unusual whenever we can.”

This past December, Alex purchased all the contents of the house that belonged to a late piano teacher

“I first met Madame Rac a couple of years ago when I was invited to look at her 1964 Cadillac in her garage, which hadn’t moved in decades. I never was inside her house as she said she had to tidy up first, so we signed the paperwork in the yard. From then on, I would run into her at coffee shops and we would have chats and say hi,” Alex told us.

“She was a bright flower, dressed very colorfully with a big smile. I was told she didn’t have much money, so at the time I was hopeful that the money from the sale of her car may help her out a bit. She was a patient and fun piano teacher, I’m told. And a very well-travelled lady. Going to Hawaii every year for vacation,” the guy added.

The former owner of the house, Bette-Joan Rac, passed away at 76 years old on November 18, 2020

The guy paid $10,000 for the contents of the house with the hope that the stuff he’ll find there will get him the money’s worth. He was pretty doubtful, though. “I was told she had a modest income and so I wasn’t expecting much,” Alex shared with us. “When I saw the inside of the house for the first time, I was a bit shocked at the state of the home as she was a very nicely dressed lady.”

Alex bought all the stuff for $10,000 in hopes to, in the end, be able to get his money’s worth

“It was in an extreme state of hoarding. In fact, the only reason I bought the contents was because I thought it might be a fun adventure for our YouTube channel and at very least, I would get a grand piano. It was impossible to see what was in the house because of how full it was at the time. Places were piled up to the ceiling,” said Alex.

However, the hoarder house turned out to be a real treasure chest

“Little did I know that the eccentric piano teacher I had met was, in fact, a millionaire!” said Alex.

The first day exploring the house, Alex and his team were emptying out some leaflets in the front room when a few little silver bars fell out of them. And that’s how the process of looking through every single book, magazine, newspaper and even shoe began. The treasures were hidden in the most unexpected places.

Throughout the house, Alex was able to find loads of pure silver dollars

“Our most impressive finds included wallets full of cash, a 100-ounce silver bar, and bags full of gold and diamond rings,” Alex told us.

The whole journey of looking through the stuff was documented in multiple vlogs that you can find on Alex’s YouTube channel.

The first auction, held online by Edmonton’s Kastner Auctions, resulted in sales of over $250,000. “We invested $10,000 in buying the house contents as is, and we will have sold $400,000 after all is said and done after three auctions of the contents and treasures… This was the best investment I have made to date!” Alex shared with Bored Panda.

Illinois officer fatally shoots suspect after being stabbed

EAST PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — An Illinois police officer fatally shot a 19-year-old man suspected in a domestic violence incident early Tuesday after he stabbed and wounded the officer during a traffic stop, police said.

East Peoria police had responded to a domestic violence call in the central Illinois city, but the suspect left the scene before police officers arrived, said Police Chief Rich Brodrick.

An officer spotted a vehicle matching the description of the suspect’s vehicle and stopped it at a CVS Pharmacy, and the suspect then stabbed the officer, Brodick told reporters at the scene.

The wounded officer then shot the suspect about 1 a.m. outside the pharmacy and he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Illinois State Police, which investigates shootings by officers.

State police said Tuesday afternoon that the officer was hospitalized in stable condition after being stabbed multiple times by the suspect, who the agency said was a 19-year-old man.

Police have not released the names of the suspect or the injured officer.

India’s Response to Farmer Protests Stirs Fears of Modi’s Power

India’s Response to Farmer Protests Stirs Fears of Modi’s Power

NEW DELHI — First came the accusations of foreign infiltration. Police complaints against protest leaders followed, as did arrests of protesters and journalists. Then the government blocked internet access in places where demonstrators gathered.

As India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, struggles to quell months of protests by farmers against new market-friendly agriculture laws, critics and analysts see a pattern of curtailing free speech that they fear is sending India down a dangerous path of intolerance.

In its response to other contentious policies — including citizenship laws that disadvantaged Muslims, its clampdown on the disputed Kashmir region and the farmers’ protests — Mr. Modi’s government has resorted to arrests, stifling of dissenting voices, and blocking of the internet. Groups that track internet freedom say India’s is slipping.

While some of the tactics are not new in India’s recent history, many fear Mr. Modi is taking them to new heights.

Gyan Prakash, a professor of history at Princeton University, said the closest parallel was in the 1970s, during the period that in India is called emergency rule. The prime minister at the time, Indira Gandhi, curbed civil liberties, imprisoned political opponents, and shut down the news media.

“But the B.J.P. onslaught is also very different and even more damaging to whatever remains of democracy in India,” he said, referring to Mr. Modi’s governing Bharatiya Janata Party.

He cited what he called a creeping dismantling of the pillars of democracy under Mr. Modi, from the coercion and control of the mainstream media to influencing of the courts.

“Critics often call it an ‘undeclared emergency,’” said Mr. Prakash, who has written a book about the emergency rule era. “It is much worse and more damaging in the long term, because the arrests and the denial of bail to detainees is an assault on whatever remains of the institutions of the rule of law.”

The efforts have drawn growing international condemnation, from human rights groups and internet personalities alike. A tweet by the pop star Rihanna in support of the farmers dominated Indian social media on Wednesday, prompting a response from pro-Modi entertainers in India urging unity and denouncing outsider voices as trying to divide the country.

The foreign ministry released a rare statement that addressed the tweets without naming anyone specifically.

“We would like to emphasize that these protests must be seen in the context of India’s democratic ethos and polity,” the ministry said. “The temptation of sensationalist social media hashtags and comments, especially when resorted to by celebrities and others, is neither accurate nor responsible.”

As the government and its most devoted supporters grow increasingly watchful, people across the country are becoming more cautious about what they say.

On television channels, critics choose their words carefully to avoid making an offensive statement. A stand-up comedian remains in jail, denied bail, for a joke the police have yet to prove he made. Journalists and opposition politicians have been taken to court because of tweets that the authorities label “misleading,” or for reporting accounts that challenged the government’s version of events.

In Uttarakhand, a state run by Mr. Modi’s party, the police chief said that his forces would be watching social media posts for “anti-national” posts and that passport applications could be denied to anyone who had posted such content.

In the state of Bihar, which is led by a Modi ally, the police said applicants would be barred from government jobs if they were found to have participated “in any law and order situation, protests, road jams etc.”

The showdown between the government and the farmers, who had peacefully camped out at the borders of New Delhi for two months demanding the laws be repealed, turned chaotic and violent last week, during a tractor procession into the city by farmers. At least one person died in what police said was a tractor accident. Hundreds of police officers and farmers were wounded.

While the farmers claimed the violence was part of a government conspiracy to derail their movement, officials quickly used it as evidence that the protest needed to be dismantled. Dozens of police complaints were lodged against the farm leaders. Some journalists at the scene were arrested, while others were dragged to court on charges of “misleading” tweets for reporting protesters’ claims that the man who died was shot by the police.

Since then, the police have erected barricades and barbed wire and even planted spikes in concrete to prevent movements toward New Delhi. The government has intermittently cut off electricity and water to one of the camps, before cutting off internet at all three, and restricted journalists’ access to them.

This week, Twitter temporarily suspended dozens of accounts related to the farmers’ protest, including the account of The Caravan, a narrative reporting magazine that has been closely covering the demonstrations. Reports in local news outlets said the suspension had occurred at the request of the Indian government. A spokesperson for Twitter was not immediately available for comment. A freelance journalist writing for The Caravan was also arrested, the magazine said.

“This kind of barricading — this is not the Pakistani border,” said Mahender Singh Dhanger, 65, a protesting farmer at the Ghazipur protest site, referring to the heavily fortified border with India’s nemesis.

Gopal Krishna Agarwal, a spokesman for the B.J.P., said the decision to restrict the internet and erect the barricades was a “police administrative move.” The party has said opposition politicians had criticized the force over its soft handling of the chaos during the tractor procession.

“It is more than 70 days,” he said. “If you look to the historical ways other countries and government have been dealing with protests, you will see the marked difference.”

The protesters “crossed all limits” on Jan. 26, Mr. Agarwal added, “but still the prime minister has said he is ready to talk to the farmers anytime, anywhere.”

Some protesting farmers believe the government’s stronger hand may work against it.

The violence during the Jan. 26 tractor march raised questions about the future of the protest movement. But the farmers appeared to be galvanized by the efforts last week to arrest Rakesh Tikait, a protest leader whom police have accused of being involved in the violence.

As the security forces surrounded the Ghazipur protest site that night, Mr. Tikait cried on the stage and threatened to hang himself rather than go to jail. His emotional outburst was widely shared on social media, drawing more supporters from the villages who began pouring in over a matter of hours. Protester numbers appear to have grown despite the internet cuts.

If past protests are an indication, those punished by the police could have a long ordeal ahead of them.

After protests in Kashmir in 2019, many of the political leaders in Kashmir, who had long supported the Indian state, remained under house arrest for months. Twenty-one protesters and activists who campaigned against the citizenship law in New Delhi are still held, a year later, under a stringent law called the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. They have been repeatedly denied bail, except for a pregnant woman who was granted bail on humanitarian grounds.

Mahavir Narwal, the father of Natasha Narwal, a doctoral student and activist arrested in last year on accusations of rioting, said her trial had been delayed repeatedly, with the police telling the court that they were gathering more evidence. He said the use of the draconian law and the delay of trials was a tactic to drive fear into anyone thinking of protesting.

“If you are arrested under these charges,” Mr. Narwal said of the unlawful activities act, “the bail is almost impossible.”

Mujib Mashal reported from New Delhi and Sameer Yasir from Srinagar, Kashmir. Hari Kumar contributed reporting from Ghazipur, India.

Disney ‘Humanimalized’: Animal Characters Turned Into Humans And Humans Into Animals (20 Pics)

Disney ‘Humanimalized’: Animal Characters Turned Into Humans And Humans Into Animals (20 Pics)

Disney characters are distinct and special. They have their own style, aesthetic, and personal traits, which is why they’re so memorable. But let’s take a detour from the canon and ask ourselves “what if something was a little different about them?” What if, for example, Bambi was a human being, and Cruella de Vil was a dog herself? What would they look like then?

Now you may wonder no more, as Alex Pick has concocted images that satisfy this peculiar interest. He has turned the animal characters to humans, and did the reverse to the human characters. The artist calls the series “Disney humanimals,” which is pretty self-explanatory.

The artist explained his motivation behind the series to Bored Panda. “It was an idea already for a very long time to transform the animals into humans and also the other way around! I like these switched roles and those kind of mashups,” he told us. If you like his work, you can check out his Instagram account apiccolodraws, which has 113k followers, and see more of his fun mashups, which include characters from Harry Potter and others.

Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics: Playbook rules detailed to safeguard against coronavirus

Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics: Playbook rules detailed to safeguard against coronavirus

The playbook rules show clapping is encouraged versus singing and chanting
Clapping will be encouraged as opposed to singing and chanting and the use of shared items like stationery is also discouraged

Singing or chanting will be discouraged at the re-arranged Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics in a bid to safeguard against the spread of coronavirus.

Instead, those attending the Olympics – due to begin on 23 July – and Paralympics – set to start on 24 August – will be encouraged to clap in order to show support.

The suggestion is one of a number of rules detailed in a ‘Playbook’ published by organisers.

A 14-day activity plan…

The first Playbook is aimed at members of international federations and technical officials but further versions due to be published will be aimed at athletes and media.

The move to highlight the processes in place to ensure a safe Games comes as organisers stress they are committed to a “successful and safe delivery” of the Games, despite Tokyo currently being in a state of emergency due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Under a page titled “think hygiene” the Playbook says individuals should “support athletes by clapping and not singing or chanting”.

In addition attendees will have to complete a “14-day activity plan” detailing “all your planned activities”, including travel and accommodation plans.

While the first Playbook is not aimed at athletes, it would also appear competitors may not be allowed to attend other sporting events at the Games.

It states “you must not visit Games venues as a spectator” and “you must not visit tourist areas, shops, restaurants or bars and gyms” for the first 14 days from arrival.

“You must only leave your accommodation to go to Official Games Venues and limited additional locations,” the Playbook adds.

‘Attend at your own risk’

Tokyo Playbook graphics show a man in a mask and some hands clapping
Rules state face masks should be worn at all times “unless outside or two metres away from others”

The first Playbook, published jointly by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Paralympic Committee and the Tokyo 2020 organising committee, says the aim is to keep participants and the people of Japan safe.

The plans stress, however, that risk cannot be “fully eliminated” and that attendees do so “at your own risk”.

A vaccination will not be compulsory for those attending the Games, although a negative Covid-19 test in the four weeks leading up to the event will be, while athletes will be be tested a minimum of every four days during the Games.

Attendees must adhere to the rules outlined in their Playbook or risk having their accreditation or right to be at the Games withdrawn.

Further guidelines include avoiding enclosed spaces and physical contact “including hugs and handshakes”, and that public transport should not be used unless permission is given.

IOC president Thomas Bach has repeatedly stressed that the Games will go ahead despite speculation to the contrary.

IOC executive director Christophe Dubi said: “We each have our part to play. That’s why these Playbooks have been created – with the rules that will make each and every one of us a sound, safe and active contributor to the Games.

“We know these Olympic Games will be different in a number of ways. For all Games participants, there will be some conditions and constraints that will require flexibility and understanding.

“You will see that we have asked for an activity plan, why? Not because we want to restrict the freedom, but because we want to make sure that all activities are taking place safely and in case there is an issue everybody can be informed properly and traced back, people can be contacted when needed.

“By committing to following the Playbooks we will be stronger together. In return, the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 will be remembered as a historic moment for humanity, the Olympic Movement and all those contributing to their success.”

50 Before & After Pics Of Tiny Kittens Turning Into Beautiful Cats (New Pics)

Every cat goes through a couple of age milestones until it turns into a fully matured king or queen mouser of the house. According to Nicole Fulcher, an assistant director of the Animal Medical Center of Mid-America, kittens usually stop growing up at around 12 months of age. It’s when their age is equivalent to a 15-year-old person.

However, that doesn’t mean they’re fully grown yet. In fact, your furry companion turns into a full-grown catto at 18 months of age, which is equivalent to a 21-year-old person, says Dr. Fulcher. Although most cats do indeed grow up at a fast rate, and it’s not your mind that’s deceiving you—some felines can take up to 2 years to reach their adult size.

Meanwhile, some of the key milestones for growing felines include: months 3-4 when baby teeth fall out and adult teeth appear; months 4-9 when kittens sexually mature; 1 year and more when kittens reach adulthood.

Only at 2+ years is the cat considered to be a socially and behaviorally mature animal and is fully ready for an independent life of its own. Meaning, they gotta spend their rest of pampered lives sitting on your lap and munching on chicken breast like there’s no tomorrow.

Boeing giving employee bonuses despite losing $12B last year

SEATTLE (AP) — Boeing Co. has said it will dole out annual performance bonuses next month to most employees despite losing $12 billion over the last year during the coronavirus pandemic.

Most of the company’s employees did not receive annual bonuses last year after it lost $636 million in 2019 because of the grounding of the 737 MAX by the Federal Aviation Administration, The Seattle Times reported.

In response, the company in February changed the structure of its incentive plan, tying its financial goals to the timing of the first delivery of a 737 MAX after its ungrounding. The company’s bonuses were previously paid out based on profits.

Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun told employees on Thursday that the company’s board of directors “recognizes the important strides the team has made.”

The 737 MAX was ungrounded in mid-November and the company delivered the first one on Dec. 8, ensuring there would be a bonus under the new incentive plan.

The bonuses are expected to be distributed next month and will vary depending on the department.

Employees also receive personalized performance scores from their managers, which adjust the payout.

For example, a commercial airplanes employee with a high performance score of 6%, will receive a 2020 annual bonus equal to 58% of 6%, or 3.5% of gross annual salary.

Executive Vice President of Human Resources Mike D’Ambrose told employees that despite the challenging year, the “team demonstrated resilience.”

The company declined comment on how incentives at the management level are structured.

Separate figures made public on Monday show that the company shrank last year, overall and in Washington state.

The company’s operations in Washington state were hit hardest because its commercial airplanes unit suffered the biggest financial hit from the MAX grounding and the huge reduction in air travel due to the pandemic.

Boeing said it shed 14,000 company jobs in Washington state, leaving the company with 56,908 jobs in the state.

Overall, the company cut about 20,000 jobs, dropping total employment to 141,014 positions, company officials said.

Navalny Supporters Aim to Seize Momentum in Challenging Putin

Navalny Supporters Aim to Seize Momentum in Challenging Putin

The Navalny team’s strategy is to build its reach and visibility while chipping away at Mr. Putin’s legitimacy through corruption investigations and election campaigns against the Kremlin. His allies say they will also call for more street protests.

“Our strategy is to be the best-organized political force when things start to change,” Vladimir Ashurkov, one of Mr. Navalny’s top allies, said in a telephone interview from London. “We don’t know when that will happen.”

He said he had discussed plans with Mr. Navalny to call for sanctions against Russian officials, state media figures and business tycoons close to Mr. Putin — which Mr. Ashurkov did in a letter to President Biden last week.

“We have a plan for how we are going to organize our work and how we will constantly pressure the authorities for his release,” Mr. Ashurkov said of Mr. Navalny.

Mr. Navalny has repeatedly embarrassed Mr. Putin and his allies with investigative reports about corruption that were viewed many millions of times on YouTube. The authorities previously tried to contain Mr. Navalny with jail terms of a few weeks to avoid turning him into a political martyr.

“We are entering a new period of instability and uncertainty,” Mr. Ashurkov said. “But no one knows how close we are to the period we are preparing for — when liberalization begins.”

On Wednesday, the streets of Moscow and St. Petersburg resounded with sirens, chants of protesters and screams. On social media and in independent news outlets, Russians voiced outrage over harrowing scenes of police violence overnight.

After the sentencing, police officers were filmed swinging batons at pro-Navalny protesters who had their hands up, clubbing a journalist twice on the head and dragging people out of passing cars.

The authorities have made more than 10,000 arrests in the past few weeks, according to OVD-Info, an activist group that tracks detentions at protests.

The harsh tactics against protesters by a large deployment of riot police officers, and the uncompromising stance of top Russian officials and the state media in depicting Mr. Navalny and his supporters as criminals, signaled that the Kremlin had shifted to a tougher line against domestic dissent.

But there was no sign that the Kremlin would change course.

“There must not be any unsanctioned protest activity,” Mr. Putin’s spokesman, Dmitri S. Peskov, told reporters on Wednesday. “Unsanctioned protests are cause for concern, confirming that the police are justified in their tough, legal actions.”

Ivan Zhdanov, the director of Mr. Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation, wrote in an Instagram post to opposition supporters: “Don’t panic and don’t lose heart.”

Others in the movement acknowledged that there is a long struggle ahead.

Mr. Ashurkov, the top Navalny ally, said his team had long understood that Russia’s pro-democracy groups were too weak to force political change on their own timetable. But he said they were confident that change would come, with dissatisfaction building in the general public and among the elite.

The authorities have made it clear that they will respond with strength. At least 1,408 protesters were detained on Tuesday, including about 1,145 in Moscow, according to OVD-Info.

In what appeared to be a carefully choreographed operation, hundreds of riot police officers fanned out across Moscow’s posh city center even before Mr. Navalny’s sentencing was announced and the opposition leader’s team called for protests. The police prevented a large crowd from forming and trapped protesters in courtyards and alleyways before marching them into buses to take them away.

Tatiana Stanovaya, a nonresident scholar at the Carnegie Moscow Center, described in a commentary the crackdown as the mark of a new phase in the Kremlin’s treatment of the anti-Putin opposition.

In years past, the Kremlin’s goal was to delegitimize the opposition in the eyes of the public and keep it out of official politics. Now, she said, it is being criminalized and cast as a national security threat.

At the same time, Mr. Putin’s critics are for the first time uniting around a single figure — Mr. Navalny.

“A time of great confrontation has arrived,” Ms. Stanovaya wrote.

Ivan Nechepurenko contributed reporting.

Turning your life around doesn’t start with a new hobby or job; these are the results. The change begins with the person, more specifically, their hair. At least that’s what Jason Schneidman thinks. However, once you check out the evidence he has collected over the years backing up this claim, it’s hard to disagree.

Schneidman, now 50, has been cutting hair since he was 14 years old, and he has always remained passionate about it—he said the first time he cut hair, he thought the whole transformation was amazing, and has enjoyed contributing to making people change.

One day, he and his business partner went out with a backpack and cordless clippers, and kept asking homeless people on the streets of Hollywood Boulevard if they needed haircuts. Fast forward five years, and their initiative has evolved into a movement to help the homeless.

Eventually, Schneidman started a nonprofit organization called THEMENSGROOMER. Now, he and his team host big events in Venice, California, where the homeless can get haircuts, food, and socks donated from people all over the world who follow and support Schneidman through the Internet.

Ex-Nebraska clerk praised for tornado work gets prison term

STANTON , Neb. (AP) — A former northeastern Nebraska village clerk who was praised for her work in helping rebuild her community following a 2014 tornado strike has been sentenced to prison for stealing from the village.

Kimberly Neiman, 58, was sentenced Monday in Stanton County District Court to three years in prison, the Norfolk Daily News reported. Neiman was arrested last year on multiple felony theft and other counts. In a deal with prosecutors, the former Pilger clerk pleaded guilty in November to one count of attempted theft in exchange for all other counts being dropped.

In addition to her sentence, Neiman was ordered to repay just over $44,000 to Pilger and the Pilger Fire Department.

Neiman was fired by the village board in February 2019, following a state audit that found more than $562,000 in questionable transactions and more than $156,000 in suspicious charges on the village’s credit card.

Prosecutors said several of the payments went to entities at mailing addresses in the U.S. and Canada that the auditor described as “questionable business locations.” They included a vape store, UPS locations, mailrooms and apartment buildings.

Before the theft came to light, the Nebraska chapter of the American Society of Public Administration had named her Outstanding Public Administrator of the Year for her work in helping rebuild Pilger. The village was devastated by a tornado on June 16, 2014, that destroyed or damaged more than half of the Stanton County community and killed a 5-year-old girl.

Mario Draghi Is Asked to Form Government in Italy

Mario Draghi Is Asked to Form Government in Italy

ROME — Mario Draghi, the former head of the European Central Bank who is largely credited with helping to save the euro, accepted a mandate from Italy’s president on Wednesday to try and form a new unity government that would guide the country out of the pandemic and through economic recovery.

Until as recently as Tuesday, the idea of Mr. Draghi replacing Giuseppe Conte as prime minister remained a pipe dream for the many Italians frustrated with a governing coalition that seemed paralyzed by ideological schisms and incompetence, especially as the coronavirus pandemic raged and economic devastation set in.

But on Tuesday evening, President Sergio Mattarella summoned Mr. Draghi and appealed to “all the political forces in the Parliament” to support a “high profile government” to meet the historic moment.

He made it clear Mr. Conte’s tenure was over and the new players, potentially political leaders proposed by the parties supporting Mr. Draghi or an all-star cast of politically unaffiliated economists, judges and scientists, was ready to take the stage.

Italy’s stock market rallied on Wednesday in response to the news that Mr. Draghi’ had been lined up to lead the Italian government. He will now begin consultations with party leaders over the coming days in an effort to form a new Italian government.

Mr. Draghi is himself no political novice. He has served in past Italian governments, was a director if Italy’s treasury and knows well the machinery of government at both the European and Italian level.

50 Overconfident People Who Got Ridiculed For It Online

Convincing someone you’re right is all about confidence. If you fake it, you’ll make it, right? R-right? Having bucketloads of confidence is great (and certainly dramatic), however, it’s never enough in isolation… especially if you’re just plain wrong and everyone around you knows it.

Being direct. Looking assured. Feeling unwavering and braver than Braveheart—these are all wonderful qualities to have, but without other substantial things to back it up, it’s all just bravado without the bite. And darn it if it isn’t entertaining as heck to watch!

We’re not the only ones to think so. In fact, that’s why the ‘Confidently Incorrect’ subreddit, with over 404k members, exists. Their community is built around poking fun at people who are chock full of confidence but get deflated the moment someone with an ounce of logic and common sense chimes in. There’s plenty of facepalm moments waiting for you, so get scrolling and upvoting your fave pics. Remember to visit the r/confidentlyincorrect community if you like their stuff!

Bored Panda interviewed the creator of the subreddit, redditor ShadowAlchemy. Read on for what they told us about how the community started and got popular, as well as for their thoughts about to what extent confidence is important in real life and what we should do if we ever find ourselves to be confidently incorrect.

Hundreds deported under Biden, including witness to massacre

HOUSTON (AP) — President Joe Biden’s administration has deported hundreds of immigrants in its early days despite his campaign pledge to stop removing most people in the U.S. illegally at the beginning of his term.

A federal judge last week ordered the Biden administration not to enforce a 100-day moratorium on deportations, but the ruling did not require the government to schedule them. In recent days, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has deported immigrants to at least three countries: 15 people to Jamaica on Thursday and 269 people to Guatemala and Honduras on Friday. More deportation flights were scheduled Monday.

It’s unclear how many of those people are considered national security or public safety threats or had recently crossed the border illegally, the priority under new guidance that the Department of Homeland Security issued to enforcement agencies and that took effect Monday.

Some of the people put on the flights may have been expelled — which is a quicker process than deportation — under a public health order that former President Donald Trump invoked during the coronavirus pandemic and that Biden has kept in place.

In the border city of El Paso, Texas, immigration authorities on Friday deported a woman who witnessed the 2019 massacre at a Walmart that left 23 people dead. She had agreed to be a witness against the gunman and has met with the local district attorney’s office, according to her lawyers.

Rosa was pulled over Wednesday for a broken brake light, detained based on previous traffic warrants, then transferred to ICE, which deported her before she could reach her attorney, said Melissa Lopez, executive director of the nonprofit Diocesan Migrant & Refugee Services, which represents her.

Rosa is being identified only by her first name because she fears for her safety in Juarez, a city across the U.S.-Mexico border from El Paso that’s known for violence and gang activity.

Jail records confirm that Rosa was booked into the El Paso jail on Wednesday for the warrants and left Friday. ICE had issued what’s known as a “detainer,” seeking to hold her on immigration violations the day she was arrested, according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

The El Paso district attorney’s office confirmed in a statement Monday that it had given Rosa’s attorneys the documentation needed to request a U.S. visa for crime victims. But the statement also said Rosa “is not a victim of the Walmart shooting case.” The district attorney did not immediately respond to follow-up questions.

Her lawyers say Rosa pleaded guilty in 2018 to driving under the influence and ICE later released her, underscoring that authorities under Trump previously found she wasn’t a threat to the public, Lopez said.

Both Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris vocally opposed the Trump administration’s immigration priorities during the presidential campaign.

“It’s important that President Biden and Vice President Harris realize that despite their very clear desires about how immigrants are treated, we continue to see on a local level immigrants being mistreated and disregarded,” Lopez said.

ICE said Friday that it had deported people to Jamaica and that it was in compliance with last week’s court order. The agency did not respond to several requests for further comment on additional deportation flights or Rosa’s case.

Officials in Honduras confirmed that 131 people were on a deportation flight that landed Friday. Another flight that landed in Guatemala on Friday had 138 people, with an additional 30 people expected to arrive Monday, officials there said.

The White House referred questions to the Department of Homeland Security, but a spokesman did not return requests for comment.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar of Texas, whose district includes El Paso, said her office had flagged Rosa’s case to the White House.

“My concern is that ICE will continue to move quickly before the Biden administration has an opportunity to make assessments and provide further directives,” Escobar said Monday.

Two legal experts say that regardless of the judge’s order on the deportation moratorium, ICE could release immigrants with deportation orders, keep people detained or otherwise delay the deportation process.

“Scheduling deportations is still a matter of discretion for the agency,” said Steve Yale-Loehr, an immigration law professor at Cornell University.

U.S. District Judge Drew Tipton last week granted a temporary restraining order sought by Texas that bars enforcement of a 100-day deportation moratorium that had gone into effect Jan. 22. Tipton said the Biden administration had violated the federal Administrative Procedure Act in issuing the moratorium and had not proven why a pause in deportations was necessary.

Tipton on Friday said he would extend his order through Feb. 23. The Justice Department has not yet asked Tipton or a federal appeals court to block the order.

The White House on Friday reissued a statement saying it believed a moratorium was “wholly appropriate,” adding that “President Biden remains committed to taking immediate action to reform our immigration system to ensure it’s upholding American values while keeping our communities safe.”

Biden is expected to issue a series of immigration-related executive orders Tuesday amid the expected confirmation of Alejandro Mayorkas as Homeland Security secretary. Those orders are expected to include the formation of a task force to reunify families separated during the Trump administration.

This version corrects that 23 people died in the El Paso massacre, not 22.

Superspreader Sunday? – The New York Times

Superspreader Sunday? – The New York Times

Coronavirus cases in the U.S. have surged after almost every major holiday of the past year, including Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. This weekend brings another major holiday, even if it’s not an official one: Super Bowl Sunday. And there is reason to worry that it will turn into Superspreader Sunday.

Polls show that a significant number of people plan to attend parties. Two separate surveys — one by Seton Hall University and one by the National Retail Federation — found that nearly 30 percent of adults said they would attend a gathering at someone’s home or watch the game at a restaurant or a bar.

If anything, this weekend may be more dangerous than most holidays. Super Bowl parties are usually indoors and can involve more households than a holiday meal. This year’s game is also happening when contagious new variants of the virus have begun to spread.

There is precedent for sporting events leading to outbreaks. Health officials in Los Angeles believe that gatherings to watch playoff games last fall involving the Lakers (who won the N.B.A. title) and Dodgers (who won the World Series) accelerated the virus’s surge in Southern California.

“Crowds of packed fans crammed into outdoor dining patios,” The Los Angeles Times explained last week, noting that gatherings often included unmasked people “chanting, singing or shouting.” The same story quotes Barbara Ferrer, the public health director of Los Angeles County: “Don’t organize a party at home. Don’t go to a Super Bowl party.”

The next several weeks feel especially important. Cases have been falling sharply, and the pace of vaccination — though still maddeningly slow — is picking up. We have reached a potential turning point, when Covid-19 deaths could start declining and never again reach their earlier highs.

But the variants present a huge risk. Behavior that was low-risk a few months ago may no longer be. Behavior that was already risky, like attending an indoor party, may be even more so.

“We need to double down,” Dr. Rebecca Wurtz of the University of Minnesota School of Public Health told me. “Here’s our chance to turn the corner, and we really need to seize it.”

(My colleague Tara Parker-Pope has detailed advice about what’s safe.)

I’ve heard from many readers who want this newsletter to continue paying attention to vaccine news. So here goes: There have been more encouraging developments.

  • AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford released data showing that none of the 12,408 people who had received a vaccine shot died from Covid symptoms or were hospitalized with them. That’s consistent with earlier results for that vaccine, as well as initial results for four other vaccines — from Johnson & Johnson, Moderna, Novavax and Pfizer.

  • Researchers found that the AstraZeneca vaccine also slows the transmission of the virus, underscoring the importance of mass vaccination as a path out of the pandemic.

  • A peer-reviewed study published in The Lancet, a British medical journal, found that Russia’s vaccine, known as Sputnik V, also offered complete protection against serious Covid illnesses. Dr. Angela Rasmussen of Georgetown University called it “great news” and added, “We need more vaccines globally.” (Related: The New Yorker’s Joshua Yaffa and The Times’s Andrew Kramer, who are both based in Moscow, have written about why they got the Sputnik vaccine.)

  • An important caveat: The vaccines’ protection doesn’t kick in immediately. It often takes at least a couple of weeks.

  • The British government said that a variant of the virus first observed there had the potential to make the vaccines less effective. But that’s less alarming than it may sound. For now, the concern is hypothetical: No data shows the vaccines to be ineffective on the British variant. Even if they are less effective, other evidence suggests that modest levels of vaccine protection may almost always be enough to downgrade Covid to an ordinary flu.

  • “Lately, when I talk to reporters, they expect me to be very worried about Covid variants. But I’m not,” Dr. Ellie Murray of the Boston University School of Public Health wrote on Twitter. “Why? Because we know what works to control Covid.” She is more worried about “the lack of action” to promote social distancing, encourage mask wearing and accelerate vaccination, she added.

  • The Senate voted along party lines on a procedural step that will let Democrats avoid a filibuster on President Biden’s coronavirus relief package and pass it with a straight majority.

  • Biden signed three executive orders on immigration, including one that aims to reunite migrant families that the Trump administration separated. Officials and immigration advocates cautioned that the changes would not happen immediately.

  • The Biden administration announced new efforts to speed up vaccinations, including sending doses to retail pharmacies.

  • A Russian court sentenced Aleksei Navalny, President Vladimir Putin’s loudest critic, to more than two years in prison on politicized charges.

  • New York prosecutors are investigating Steve Bannon, weeks after Trump pardoned him. Bannon could face charges of defrauding donors to the border wall.

  • A shootout in South Florida killed two F.B.I. agents and injured three others. They were investigating violent crimes against children.

  • Jeff Bezos is stepping down as C.E.O. of Amazon and will become executive chairman. Andy Jassy, who runs Amazon’s cloud computing division, will succeed him.

  • GameStop’s stock price is down 81 percent from its peak last week, quickly wiping out many investors’ wealth.

A Morning Listen: Tighter border enforcement has driven migrants to the sea in dangerous attempts to reach California. Listen to the narrated Times Magazine account.

From Opinion: “To my own astonishment, I’m rooting for Brady” in the Super Bowl, Frank Bruni, a Times Opinion columnist, writes. Here’s why.

Lives Lived: Tom Moore, a British Army veteran nicknamed “Captain Tom,” became a symbol of determination early in the pandemic when he raised $45 million for hospitals by walking laps in his garden. He died at 100, after having recently been hospitalized with Covid.

The Brooklyn Nets, who have long struggled to escape the shadow of the nearby Knicks, have put together a lineup so loaded with talent that they resemble a musical supergroup — basketball’s answer to the Three Tenors, the Traveling Wilburys or Them Crooked Vultures.

Last month, the Nets made a blockbuster trade to get James Harden, the N.B.A.’s top scorer. He joined a team that already featured two stars in Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. The combo, the Times basketball writer Marc Stein told us, is “the most ambitious assemblage of offensive talent in N.B.A. history.”

Two years ago, Harden averaged more than 36 points a game; only Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain have exceeded that. Durant has been the highest-scoring player in the N.B.A. four times — a number that, again, only Jordan and Chamberlain have topped. Irving is a six-time all-star who won a championship in Cleveland.

Yet their success is not guaranteed. In trading for Harden, the Nets gave up a lot, including some of their best defenders. “Defense and depth will matter eventually,” Marc noted. “You can’t just score your way to a championship in the N.B.A.”

“But,” he added, “the Nets have never mattered more in New York.”

The pangram from yesterday’s Spelling Bee was impalpable. Today’s puzzle is above — or you can play online.

Here’s today’s Mini Crossword, and a clue: Light green (four letters).

Women Share The 75 Most Obvious Ever Things Mansplained To Them

Women Share The 75 Most Obvious Ever Things Mansplained To Them

The term “mansplaining” is a relatively new one. After first being innovated by the author Rebecca Solnit in 2008, it allowed women to describe a common experience they share for which they never had the terminology. “Mansplaining” went beyond the generics like “patronizing” and “presumptuous” and shed light on a profoundly negative side that men explaining things to women has.

Unfortunately, unsolicited explanations from men who are neither your teacher nor your manager are all too common. But to see the level of absurdity and obviousness of the things women have mansplained to them, we have to look at the actual instances that happened to them in real life.

So when Twitter user Nicole Froio, who’s a PhD on sexual violence and masculinity, asked women to share “the most obvious thing a man has ever mansplained to you,” the answers started pouring in one after another. Both ludicrous and plain irritating, they speak thousands of words about power imbalance and gender bias, which shouldn’t be the case when we live in 2021.

Read more irritating mansplaining cases as shared by women in our previous article right here.
