How Young Feminists Can Understand And Subvert The Internalized Male Gaze

How Young Feminists Can Understand And Subvert The Internalized Male Gaze

Within various theories of social science and visual media, academics present the male gaze as a nebulous idea during their headache-inducing meta-discussions. However, the internalized male gaze is a reality, which is present to most people who identify as women. As we mature, we experience realizations of the perpetual male gaze.

Perhaps this surreal a-ha moment happened to you when you danced in your bedroom at night. Performing for imaginary cameras, you hum and sway. However, you become embarrassed as you trip – and feel unforgivably un-hot – for your audience of zero. The sensation is absurd. It’s in those moments that Margaret Atwood’s poetry appears true.

“Male fantasies, male fantasies, is everything run by male fantasies? Up on a pedestal or down on your knees, it’s all a male fantasy: that you’re strong enough to take what they dish out, or else too weak to do anything about it. Even pretending you aren’t catering to male fantasies is a male fantasy: pretending you’re unseen, pretending you have a life of your own, that you can wash your feet and comb your hair unconscious of the ever-present watcher peering through the keyhole, peering through the keyhole in your own head, if nowhere else. You are a woman with a man inside watching a woman. You are your own voyeur.”

www.tiktok.com

What is the male gaze? From what context did the male gaze emerge?

While this familiar feeling is psychosocial, the term “male gaze” was originally coined by Laura Mulvey in 1973 to talk about the ways in which women in art are placed as objects of heterosexual male desire. Obviously, heterosexual male desire is the ever-present subject. A woman’s complex feelings, interesting thoughts, and own sexual ambitions are less important than her male framing. Examples of the male gaze abound in tropes like the “Manic Pixie Dream Girl” or female superheroes who always must be sensual.

But this idea permeates beyond the screen. As art imitates actuality, and/or vice-versa, the male gaze has become a frustrating perspective with pervasive psychological consequences.

As an ideological cornerstone of patriarchy, socio-political disparities are realized within an antiquated value system, by which male-created institutions (e.g the entertainment industry, advertising, fashion, etc.) unilaterally circumscribe what is standard in society. You can just think of the internalized male gaze as a facet and an outcome of the patriarchy.

www.tiktok.com

Over generations, as women have been socially coerced into placing more importance on their looks, women might internalize this observer view of their appearances as the central way to think about themselves. This concept is problematic, of course, because women may end up placing greater value on how they look than how they feel.

An important aside for a later article: the neoliberal/choice “feminism” of Barstool, Goop, and MLMs – which emphasizes being a “girl-boss,” doing “self-care” so that you can be productive at a job that does not pay you well enough, and using (white) empowerment as a marketing technique – does not help women level the male gaze. In neoliberal/choice feminism, objectification and pornography, (which are inherently rooted in the male gaze), have simply been rebranded as sexual emancipation. In fact, this misguided step towards sexual equality has colonized and exploited feminism. We should look somewhere else besides mainstream corporations for such intimate solutions in gender equity. We are better off practicing critical reasoning, introspection, and grace.

So, now what?

When I realize that I’m performing for the patriarchy, I try to avoid feeling guilty about my internalized male gaze. Due to the immersive nature of the U.S. American social systems, women are victims of and participants in this sort of sexism. Instead of feeling shame, I vow to unlearn what I’ve been spoon-fed.

I ask myself who my performative actions are benefitting. If the actions are only benefiting men, my little show must be reassessed. But, if the actions benefit me – or other women – the spectatorship is decidedly less harmful. It is in this way that women can function with the most benefit. If a woman’s existence hinges upon the masculine gaze, she then has the ability to manipulate the system in which she is seen, becoming the one who commands this visual economy.

Big picture: deconstructing the thought of the male gaze indicates that all participants in society must deliberately subvert the masculine perspective’s chokehold by blurring gender boundaries. And, obviously, people who identify as women should be in the literal director’s seat and metaphorical driver’s seat more often.

For the individual: along with a salubrious dose of patience with yourself, the only actionable conclusion that I can draw is that femininity is not fixed and should be not enclosed like feminine stereotypes are usually categorized.

A woman may not own the notion of the gaze, but she can control and shift it to her benefit. That indisputable fact is what you have in your control.

Six Nations 2021: France head coach Fabien Galthie tests positive for coronavirus

France playing Ireland
France are favourites to win the 2021 Six Nations title after victory in their first two games

France head coach Fabien Galthie has tested positive for coronavirus, the French Rugby Federation (FFR) has said.

Earlier on Tuesday, the FFR said the entire squad was isolating after a non-playing staff member also tested positive.

The pair will isolate for seven days, with France due to host Scotland on 28 February.

France are top of the Six Nations table after two wins from two, having beaten Ireland in Dublin on Sunday.

An FFR statementexternal-link said neither of those who had tested positive had any symptoms, adding: “They will continue to work from a distance.”

All players tested negative on Monday evening and will be be tested again on Wednesday, then twice more this week.

France will announce their 31-man squad for the Scotland match on Wednesday.

Ireland said no positive results were found when all members of their squad and backroom staff were tested on Monday.

Here’s A Vintage Photo Collection Of Strange Men’s Hairstyles Throughout The Centuries

Here’s A Vintage Photo Collection Of Strange Men’s Hairstyles Throughout The Centuries

We associate men’s fashion of past centuries with class and neatness. When we look at those times, we’re used to seeing tidy facial hair, slick pomades, fancy hats, and suits. Today’s post will change the perception a little bit. Well, in terms of hair, at least. For there have always been fashion renegades, or just people with bad hair days, or just bad hair in general.

Robert E. Jackson is an avid collector of vintage photography. He has over three thousand photos in his collection. He either got them anonymously, or sought them out, but in any case, he has ownership of all of them. The vast collection has many peculiar images, some of which we show to you today.

He shares vintage photos spanning from the early days of photography to the late 20th century, where you can see the strange hairstyles of men. They’re definitely not what we expect of those times in terms of men’s hairstyles. The rhyme and reason for having such hairstyles eludes us, and there’s not much that we can do to find out, but they definitely spark some curiosity.

Breaking Down The Beginning, Middle, And End of Netflix’s Newest ‘To All The Boys’ Movie

Breaking Down The Beginning, Middle, And End of Netflix’s Newest ‘To All The Boys’ Movie

Were all teenagers and twenty-somethings bingeing the latest “To All The Boys: Always and Forever” last night with all of their friends on their basement TV? Nope? Just me? Oh, how I doubt that.

I have been excited for this movie ever since I saw the NYC skyline in the trailer that was released earlier this year. I’m a sucker for any movie or TV show that takes place in the Big Apple.

www.youtube.com

If you haven’t watched it yet, gather your friends, pop the popcorn and unwrap the chocolates. It is Valentine’s weekend and that means it’s time for cheesy Netflix movies.

Here are a few takeaways and thoughts my friends and I had last night while watching this at one in the morning in our sorority’s basement.

“Are you okay?”

Peter Kavinsky

Netflix

Cue the “aww” cute puppy dog face emoji about Peter’s response to Lara Jean’s Stanford rejection letter. He handled it well, especially when he asked if she was okay. Then he convinced her to possibly transfer to Stanford after her freshman year, but the next day she began to fall in love with New York…

When Peter took off his face mask and acted like his skin was just ripped off his face…?

It’s okay Kavinsky, it’s just a simple sheet mask that moisturizes your skin and unclogs pores. No need to be dramatic

What the heck is a “meet-cute?”

Peter and Lara Jean

media.giphy.com

Is it just my friend group or has anyone else never heard this term? Is the movie trying to make this a trend? What’s the problem with just saying “we met at _____” ???

Kitty constantly speaks her mind and she is NOT afraid to hold back

PERIOD. Everyone needs a little sister to keep them in check, and Lara Jean got just that

Why do all movies focus on some of the biggest and most competitive schools?

Peter and Stanford

Netflix

Why couldn’t have the characters gone to the University of Virginia and William & Mary like in the “To All The Boys” books?

Also, side note, did anyone else notice the “High School Musical” parallel going on? Troy went to Berkeley and Gabriella went to Stanford, just sayin’…

The yearbook “contract”

Lara Jean Yearbook

Giphy

That scene just melted all of our hearts. Yes, it was predictable and cheesy, but what else would you really expect? It was cute, the wedding decorations were beautiful, and everything was beautifully executed.

As much as it is cheesy and unrealistic, parts of it are also very realistic no matter your age

I am happy and proud that Lara Jean followed her heart to NYU. If she and Kavinsky are meant to be together, they’ll make it work. If she had gone to Berkeley an hour away from him, she would’ve been thinking about the “what ifs” of New York the entire time. It’s important to go outside of your comfort zone and do what is best for you, not what is best for the boy. Life doesn’t always go as planned, and this movie is the perfect example of that.

Now they’re all off to college, exploring new places, meeting new people, and trying new things. Here’s to unpredictable futures and crazy life plans.

Burnt pan is a disaster for everyone who washes pans because it takes a lot of time to make greasy pan perfectly clean. You can save a lot of time and use toothpaste to clean it. And it won’t take much effort. If you don’t have facial scrub or mask for blackheads at home, exfoliate your nose using toothpaste and toothbrush. Also, you can use this idea to exfoliate lips. Another handy use of toothpaste is to use toothpaste to quickly clean a dirty iron. Walking (and Skating) on Thin Ice, Some in Europe Paid the Price

Walking (and Skating) on Thin Ice, Some in Europe Paid the Price

Those ice skating in various European places this weekend might have done well to listen to Yoko Ono: “Walking on thin ice, I’m paying the price.”

Hundreds of people danced, skated, played hockey or strolled on frozen lakes and canals in Europe over the weekend, but the ice was not always thick enough to keep everyone on their feet.

In Amsterdam, a skater wearing only a swimming suit on a frozen canal got his few seconds of fame — captured in a video seen nearly seven million times as of Tuesday — when he fell through the ice and had to be rescued by a more careful skater, who also wore more clothes.

In Berlin, police officers flew over frozen lakes in helicopters and ordered walkers and skaters to leave. In Northern England, the Lancashire Wildlife Trust urged people to keep away from frozen lakes, where rescuing resources were limited.

Temperatures in Europe fell last week to levels that had not been seen in years, prompting many to flout lockdown restrictions and social distancing measures to play in the snow or on the ice. In London, parts of the River Thames froze, and people skied on the streets of Edinburgh and Paris.

In Athens, unusual snowfalls have halted Covid-19 vaccinations, and the authorities asked members of the public to go outside only for essential activities. In Germany, a homeless aid group, BAG W, said last week that five people had died in the cold in a week.

In the Netherlands, where skating on natural ice is a treat that happens every few years and amounts to something of a national passion, people flocked to ice clubs, according to the broadcaster NOS, turning to skating as a happy distraction from a nationwide lockdown and curfew.

That led in some cases to incongruous, even worrying scenes.

In Amsterdam, the swimsuit-clad man was not the only one who misjudged the ice: Onlookers helped a group of skaters with ropes and hockey sticks after they fell in icy waters of a canal, according to video posted on social media.

In Berlin, a father and his 1-year-old child were taken to a hospital after they fell in a lake, according to the Berlin police. “OFF THE ICE,” it wrote on Twitter. (A thaw began in most European cities this week.)

The Canadian Red Cross recommended walking or skating only on ice that at least 15 centimeters, or nearly 6 inches, thick — and even thicker for parties or games.

Those who fell in cities were quickly rescued, but the authorities in remote spots urged people to behave responsibly.

“Our reserves, by their nature, are remote places,” said Alan Wright, the campaign manager for the Lancashire Wildlife Trust. “If anyone gets into difficulties, there will only be a few, if any, people around to help.”

Deaths of Soldiers and Policemen Held by Kurdish Guerrillas Roil Turkish Politics

Deaths of Soldiers and Policemen Held by Kurdish Guerrillas Roil Turkish Politics

ISTANBUL — Turks reacted with shock and anger Monday to the news that Kurdish guerrillas had executed 13 Turkish soldiers and police officers held captive in a cave in the mountains of northern Iraq.

The men were being held hostage by members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or P.K.K., a Maoist guerrilla movement that has been fighting the Turkish state for more than three decades. Turkish soldiers discovered their bodies in a cave during a military operation in Iraq’s Gara region, the government said Sunday. All of the hostages had been executed, all but one with gunshots to the head, it said.

The death toll, and the manner in which the men were killed, landed like a bombshell in Turkey’s tense and divided politics. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his political allies condemned the attack, as opposition parties questioned why the government had failed to negotiate the men’s release and had risked a military operation to rescue them.

The P.K.K. said the deaths were caused by airstrikes during the Turkish military operation that began on Feb. 10. The Turkish minister of defense, Hulusi Akar, said the P.K.K. commander in charge had executed the men as soon as the operation began.

Twelve of the hostages who have been identified were junior members of the army and military police. All had been captured five or six years ago by the P.K.K. in a period after peace negotiations between the Turkish government and the Kurdish guerrillas had broken down.

The guerrillas often set up impromptu roadblocks on remote roads in areas of eastern and southeastern Turkey, and abduct members of the armed forces traveling on public buses or private cars to go home to visit their families and return to their bases.

The men found in the cave had been abducted and taken across the border into the mountains of northern Iraq, a region the P.K.K. has long used as a rear base.

Ozturk Turkdogan, head of the Turkish Human Rights Association said the organization had been in touch with 10 of the hostages’ families since 2015. But despite efforts to press for negotiations, the Turkish security services had been unyielding in their pursuit of military operations, he said. Speaking on Arti TV, he also criticized the P.K.K. for holding the hostages for so long.

The incident could prove politically damaging for Mr. Erdogan, but may also give him ammunition to whip up nationalist feeling and crack down on his opponents.

He called the mother of one of the slain soldiers during a speech broadcast on national television on Monday, promising to avenge her son’s death. His political ally, Devlet Bahceli, leader of the Nationalist Movement Party, vowed that anyone showing sympathy for the Kurdish group would be treated as a terrorist and accomplice.

Mr. Erdogan lashed out against the P.K.K. in his speech, and said the United States and the pro-Kurdish political party in Turkey were also responsible for the soldiers’ deaths.

He blamed the United States for supporting and arming the People’s Protection Units, or Y.P.G., an affiliate of the Kurdish group, which U.S. forces use to fight against the Islamic State in Syria, even though Washington, along with Turkey and the European Union, has designated the P.K.K. a terrorist group.

“If we are together with you in NATO, if we are to continue our unity, then you will act sincerely toward us,” Mr. Erdogan said in the speech, made to members of his party at a gathering in Rize, in Turkey’s Black Sea region. “Then, you will stand with us, not with the terrorists.”

The Turkish foreign ministry said it had summoned the American ambassador Monday to protest the conditional wording of a U.S. State Department statement on the incident, which read, “If reports of the death of Turkish civilians at the hands of the P.K.K., a designated terrorist organization, are confirmed, we condemn this action in the strongest possible terms.”

The pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party, or H.D.P., is regularly accused of terrorism for its ties to the P.K.K. Mr. Erdogan’s criticism could signal of new wave of oppression against the party, which has seen many elected representatives and activists removed from their positions and detained.

Anadolu Agency, the state-run news service, reported that an investigation had been opened against two H.D.P. lawmakers, for “provocative” social media posts on the incident when news first broke of the killings on Sunday. The H.D.P. said Monday that 700 people, including party officials, had been detained overnight around the country.

Members of the H.D.P. and of the Human Rights Association have in the past worked to mediate with the P.K.K. and secure the release of hostages. The two lawmakers being investigated had met with families of the hostages.

The party called on the government and the P.K.K. to give an account of what happened in a statement Monday.

“The government is in a position to account for the losses to the families of the deceased and to society, instead of asking our party to account for them,” the statement read.

“Likewise, the P.K.K. should inform the public of Turkey and the world about how the captives lost their lives, which were entrusted to them, and about their responsibility for those deaths.”

The party also called for the P.K.K. to release other captives in their hands.

As Fox News Struggles at Home, Murdoch Brings Its Playbook to the U.K.

As Fox News Struggles at Home, Murdoch Brings Its Playbook to the U.K.

LONDON — Beset by declining ratings, upheaval in its on-air ranks and a multibillion-dollar defamation suit related to its election coverage, Fox News is staggering out of the Trump era — blamed by many for seeding the poisonous political culture that brought a violent mob into the halls of the United States Capitol.

Yet in Britain, where television news is regulated to avoid political bias, Rupert Murdoch and a competing group of investors are seizing this moment to create two upstart news services that will challenge the BBC and other broadcasters by borrowing heavily from Mr. Murdoch’s Fox playbook.

If the timing for a pair of brash, right-wing news outlets seems strange given Fox’s recent travails in the United States, it is no less odd in Britain. With the country finally out of the European Union, its bitter political divisions over Brexit have been pushed aside, at least for now, by the grim ordeal of the coronavirus pandemic.

Though these ventures are in competition, they share Murdoch DNA.

Mr. Murdoch’s entrant, the less ambitious of the two, hopes to exploit what its executives see as a gap in the British market for edgy commentary and personality-driven programs. The rival venture — GB News, which has different backers but is stocked with veterans of the Murdoch empire — calculates there is an audience for a channel that rejects what it views as the left-leaning political correctness of the BBC.

“British news broadcasting is pretty much a one-party state,” said Andrew Neil, who is the chairman of GB News and will host a prime-time show. “They all come at stories from various shades of left.”

Pronouncements like that set off alarm bells for some British commentators. While Britain has long had a freewheeling, unabashedly partisan newspaper industry, critics say the last thing it needs after Brexit is a Fox-like news channel — one that could sow further divisions and open the door to the kinds of conspiracy theories nurtured by President Donald J. Trump, and amplified by Fox.

“Imagine being the country that has watched the last four years unfold in the U.S., with its bloodlines so easily traceable to the Fox sensibility, and is nonetheless thinking: let’s have a bit of that,” wrote Marina Hyde, a columnist at the left-leaning Guardian newspaper. “Because that’s us, of course.”

Last week, critics began an online campaign to pressure cellular carriers, banks and other advertisers to boycott GB News.

“I would be so happy if @bt_uk would seriously consider the implications of advertising with such a potentially dangerous channel,” Carol Wilkie, of North Yorkshire, wrote in a typical tweet.

Mr. Neil struck back at what he called the “woke warriors,” pointing out that they were trying to cancel a channel that had yet to air a single program. GB News, he said, would cover issues from the “center, perhaps the center right” — not the hard-right approach of Fox. Its shows will offer diverse voices and stick to the facts, he insisted. Unlike Fox or BBC, GB News will not air rolling news coverage.

A combative broadcaster who until last year hosted a prime-time talk show on the BBC, Mr. Neil is famous for his forensic questioning of politicians. Prime Minister Boris Johnson declined to appear on the show during the 2019 election, drawing japes that he was scared of Mr. Neil.

“You can’t take Fox News to this market and give it a British accent,” said Mr. Neil, who once worked for Mr. Murdoch as editor of The Sunday Times of London. “It just doesn’t work.”

Mr. Murdoch did, in fact, bring Fox to Britain with unhappy results. The broadcasting regulator censured it in 2017 for twice violating impartiality standards: Sean Hannity’s coverage of Mr. Trump’s ban on people from majority-Muslim countries and Tucker Carlson’s coverage of a terrorist attack in Manchester.

Sky dropped the channel the same year, citing its small audience.

Executives at Mr. Murdoch’s venture, known as News UK TV, declined to be interviewed. But privately, they, too, play down comparisons to Fox. Unlike GB News, which is an old-fashioned broadcasting channel, Mr. Murdoch is planning a less costly streaming service, akin to Netflix or Now TV, to take advantage of that growing market.

The service, which is to begin a low-key rollout in April, will promote Mr. Murdoch’s stable of British media properties, from The Sun, a mass-market tabloid, and The Times, an upmarket broadsheet, to Talk Radio, which offers Rush Limbaugh-style commentary. All skew to the right.

News UK TV will also skip breaking news coverage and feature shows with politically opinionated voices. But it is punching up the lighter side in its publicity. The first announced show, “News to Me,” will be hosted by Gordon Smart, a Scottish-born rock music aficionado who worked for The Sun.

Mr. Murdoch, 89, who has spent much of the last year sheltering from the pandemic at his 18th-century estate in Oxfordshire, recruited David Rhodes, a former president of Fox News and CBS News, to start the service.

Mr. Rhodes, whose younger brother, Benjamin J. Rhodes, was a senior adviser to President Barack Obama, has been in a lively talent war with GB News to lure marquee names like the broadcaster Piers Morgan.

News UK TV obtained a broadcasting license, and executives said its programming would stay within the regulatory “guardrails.” But critics of the Australian-born Mr. Murdoch said he had entered other markets, including Australia, with similar reassurances, only to make the channels more politically extreme over time.

“Murdoch will say anything and do anything to win regulatory approval, and then do the reverse in practice,” Kevin Rudd, a former prime minister of Australia and outspoken critic of Mr. Murdoch, said in an interview.

“He has followed this formula to the letter in Australia,” Mr. Rudd said. “It will be the identical formula he will use in the United Kingdom.”

Critics also worry about how rigorously Britain’s regulator, known as Ofcom, will enforce the rules on impartiality. Mr. Johnson is said to be considering Paul Dacre as its next chairman. A longtime editor of The Daily Mail, Mr. Dacre is a staunch Brexiteer with a history of opposing restrictions on journalists.

Moreover, said Stuart Purvis, a former broadcaster who oversaw content and standards at Ofcom, “the British devotion to impartiality is based in large part on a hunch. It isn’t an equal time provision.” Broadcasters are allowed “to deliver opinions based on informed knowledge,” he said, provided there is a rough balance between left and right.

Even if these new services tilt to the right, some journalists say there is little to fear, so long as they avoid spreading false news — accusations that led a voting technology company, Smartmatic, to file a $2.7 billion lawsuit against Fox and three anchors, Maria Bartiromo, Lou Dobbs and Jeanine Pirro.

“It is at least plausible to argue that the BBC is seen as being institutionally left of center,” said Simon Jenkins, a columnist for The Guardian. “To that extent, it is plausible to say there is room for something that is right of center.”

The BBC’s reputation did suffer during Brexit, with critics saying it gave too much time to those who opposed leaving the European Union. But it has rebounded during the pandemic, its round-the-clock coverage helping to unite the country.

Politically, too, right-wing news may have missed its moment. After Mr. Johnson won a landslide victory, his Conservative allies began a campaign to strip the BBC of its public funding. But the health crisis has taken much of the air out of those efforts.

“These ventures were always planned for a time when the BBC’s grip on the news agenda would have been loosened, if not diminished,” said Claire Enders, a London-based media analyst. “Things have changed radically.”

Once the pandemic recedes, some media experts predict that the culture-war battles that divided Britons during Brexit will resurface. If immigration and populism are less resonant, new tempests will erupt over issues like “woke” culture, a term that Mr. Neil brandished in his defense of GB News.

GB News recently raised 60 million pounds, or $83 million, from a Dubai-based investment firm, Legatum, and a pro-Brexit hedge fund manager, Paul Marshall. Its other backers include the American cable giant Discovery.

“We’re seeing the politics of resentment, which are often driven by older white men who are right wing,” said Rasmus Kleis Nielsen, director of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford. He added, “It is a market that is well-served in print and online already.”

Mr. Murdoch seems aware of those realities. After his stretch in Britain during the pandemic, media executives say he has shifted his focus to the United States, where he is busy trying to fix the problems at Fox.

“Fox News has been successful in the U.S. because it’s commercially successful,” said Douglas McCabe, a London-based media analyst. “In order for News U.K. to be politically and culturally influential, it needs to be commercially successful, and in the U.K. that’s a tougher call.”

Two Men, Two Decades, No Evidence

Two Men, Two Decades, No Evidence

Curtis Flowers’s day typically began around 4:30 a.m., when a prison guard slid a breakfast tray into his cell. The tray often included a biscuit, potatoes, oatmeal or grits — “a bunch of starch,” as Flowers said to me recently, with a quiet laugh.

Sometime after 8 a.m., the guards led him from his cell to a small outdoor pen where he was permitted to exercise, look up at the sky and talk to other death-row inmates in nearby pens. The pen was large enough for him to take three steps in one direction and two steps in another. “Walking in circles, you get dizzy real quick,” Flowers said.

After an hour in the pen — sometimes less — he returned to his cell for the rest of the day. There, he read books, wrote letters, watched television and talked with the guards or fellow prisoners through the bars.

Flowers lived like this for more than 20 years, on death row in Mississippi — despite there being no good evidence that he committed the crime, a 1996 quadruple murder in a furniture store, for which he was convicted.

He was a victim of prosecutor misconduct. A local district attorney, Doug Evans, convicted Flowers on weak evidence that later fell apart: To this day, no witness or physical evidence even puts Flowers at the scene of the crime. The U.S. Supreme Court threw out his conviction in 2019, citing Evans’s blocking of Black jurors. Last year, the state of Mississippi dropped all charges.

When I spoke to Flowers by Zoom recently, I was awed by his grace. He has spent nearly half his life behind bars, and in 2018 was denied a request to attend his mother’s funeral, but he conveys a calm cheerfulness. “Just doing little things to make me happy,” he said, like bass fishing.

Still, there was one subject that sparked passion in him: the consequences — or lack thereof — for Evans, as well as for some of his friends still locked up in Parchman Farm prison. Flowers told me that while he believed many people at Parchman were guilty, others are there because of Evans’s misconduct. “It’s terrible,” Flowers said.

Yet Evans remains the top prosecutor for seven Mississippi counties. He “has faced no adverse consequences for his handling of the case,” as Parker Yesko — a member of the “In the Dark” podcast team that exposed the holes in the case — has written.

In recent years, a movement known as criminal justice reform has sprung up, supported by both conservatives and progressives. Its biggest goal is reducing the number of Americans behind bars — which is currently above two million, giving the U.S. the world’s highest incarceration rate. Another goal is to introduce more accountability for prosecutors and detectives found to have committed misconduct, creating incentives to avoid unjust convictions.

“Prosecutors can misbehave with impunity, facing virtually no consequences even when a judge says they have committed substantive misconduct,” Shaila Dewan, a Times reporter covering criminal justice, told me.

My colleague Jan Ransom has published a gripping account of another case of potential misconduct. It takes place in the Bronx and involves Huwe Burton, whose mother was stabbed to death in 1989, when he was 16. Three detectives coaxed a false confession out of him, using a mix of threats and lies, and he spent almost 20 years in prison. A judge has since exonerated him.

Darcel Clark, the Bronx district attorney, is now conducting an inquiry into whether the three detectives’ tactics tainted 31 other homicide cases. The detectives have denied wrongdoing, and Clark has suggested they were following “standard procedure” at the time.

Still, Jan writes, “the inquiry highlights how a new generation of prosecutors in New York and elsewhere is delving deeply into whether deceptive police interrogation tactics might have warped the criminal justice system.” In the Bronx and some other places, prosecutors have formed units to review old cases and tried to bar problematic police officers from testifying.

Prosecutors and police officers have tough jobs and sometimes make honest mistakes, as Nina Morrison of the Innocence Project, which helped free Burton, has noted. But outright misconduct is more frequent than many people realize. It played a role in more than half of the 2,400 exonerations documented nationwide over the last three decades. “For Black men wrongly convicted of murder, the proportion was 78 percent,” Jan writes.

Toward the end of my conversation with Flowers, I asked him what he thought should happen to prosecutors like Evans who have committed misconduct. Flowers replied that they should be subject to the same punishment they have inflicted on others. “It sucks to be behind bars,” he said, “and I don’t think he would want to sit back there.”

For more on Flowers: You can watch a “60 Minutes” segment or listen to “In the Dark,” both of which include interviews with both Evans and Flowers.

For more on Burton: I recommend taking a few minutes to read Jan Ransom’s story.

What is “nice TV”? It’s a resurging genre of sitcom that focuses on day-to-day life and radiates a gentle sweetness. These shows tend to be “more lovable than sidesplitting,” as The Times’s TV critic James Poniewozik writes — but that’s the point.

Early examples include: “Parks & Recreation,” which follows a cheery director of a parks department in Indiana; “Bob’s Burgers,” an animated show; “Schitt’s Creek,” the Canadian series about a once-wealthy family who finds new purpose; and “The Good Place,” which is set in the afterlife.

Among the latest entries in the genre is “The Great North,” which follows the eccentric Tobin family in remote Alaska, and was created by “Bob’s Burgers” alums. “The genuine care that the Tobins demonstrate for each other never tips toward the cloying because The Great North’s writers are so good at inserting very specific jokes into the mix,” Jen Chaney writes in Vulture.

That’s a common feature of the best versions of “nice TV.” They don’t always avoid darkness, but their approach tends to be more sincere.

A Fan Wrote A Letter To Deadpool And Ryan Reynolds Shares His ‘Response’ After 5 Years

A Fan Wrote A Letter To Deadpool And Ryan Reynolds Shares His ‘Response’ After 5 Years

In a world where email is king, snail mail is still a thing, and people actually send written letters to other people, especially if it’s fan mail. And who doesn’t like getting fan mail, right!?

Well, after the launch of Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds received a letter from a fan who apparently was given an English class assignment to write a letter to someone they looked up to. Unbeknownst to the teacher, this kid decided to write Deadpool himself. And Ryan Reynolds replied.

Ever imagined writing Deadpool a letter? Well, this one kid did, and has finally now got a response

So, Ryan Reynolds is in the news again as he shared a fan letter from 2016—right after the release of the first Deadpool movie. Turns out, Hunter, the fan who wrote Reynolds, had an assignment due for his English class: particularly, he had to write someone he looked up to a letter.

Hunter kicked off by complimenting Deadpool’s fantastic, “laugh my [butt off]” movie and wanted to say to keep up the good work. Mind you, he addressed this to Deadpool himself, not Ryan Reynolds, which is already a pretty cool touch!

Anywho, Hunter continued on to say that he is happy to share the same sense of humor with Deadpool, and that he was happy the producers didn’t tone it down for the movie. In fact, he wanted more of it.

Meet Hunter, a kid who apparently had an assignment to write someone he looks up to—so he wrote to Deadpool

This letter was before the second movie was even in the works, so there were also hopes of Fox and Marvel making a second movie—and not just any movie, but a good one, “not a crappy second movie like most sequels are,” as noted Hunter. “You deserve to have one more movie for yourself.”

Hunter also took the chance to ask for an autograph from Deadpool, and also if he could share any advice on how to be a badass just like him.

He concluded the letter by thanking Deadpool for his time, and explaining why he’s writing at all—the guy looks up to Deadpool. I mean, if you had to send a letter to someone you look up to, you’d probably send it to someone in your family, maybe your friend, but sending a world-famous actor is a pretty unique way of spinning it.

Well, the actor who played Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds, responded to him—sure, the letter never got sent, but he has now shared it on Instagram ant Twitter

Well, Mr. Reynolds got the letter. And he actually responded to it in full. But, there was a slight problem—somehow it was never sent. The letter just got lost and Reynolds recently unearthed the letter. But instead of ignoring this, or trying to send it again, he did the next best thing and shared the whole interaction between the two on his social media.

Reynolds thanked Hunter for the kind letter, reassuring him that there are going to be many movies to come, joking that it’s good he got to do it his way—just imagine if Disney, the owner of Marvel, was to do it their way. Yep…

And as he was asked to give advice, advice he did give, saying that whatever Hunter decides to do, to stick to it. Focusing on one thing. For him, it’s acting, and he and acting go together like Tom Brady and New England: “together forever.” Yep…

Reynolds said that the letter still ‘holds’, though nobody is really sure if this actually happened, or if it is yet another good joke by Reynolds himself (with more people leaning towards the latter)

And then there was the whole Vine thing. Yah, it was shut down later that year. No one is really sure if this letter is actually real and Reynolds is very bad at predicting the future or if it’s yet another pretty good joke from Ryan himself about how there’s gonna be a Deadpool movie every couple of years, and Ryan will keep to acting and not expand… and Vine… you get the point! Some seemed to believe it while others claimed it was a joke. And more people claimed it was a joke and Ryan was yet again trolling.

Regardless, this happened exactly 5 years after Deadpool was released, so it’s certainly a good way of celebrating the 5-year anniversary. Nearly a million people saw and liked it on Reynolds’ Instagram. It was also shared on Twitter where another 67,000 people liked it.

Accusations of Sexual Harassment Rock Greek Arts World

Accusations of Sexual Harassment Rock Greek Arts World

ATHENS — Less than a month after allegations of sexual assault by a Greek Olympic sailing champion spurred a national reckoning on a topic long considered taboo, the Greek arts world has been swept up in a torrent of accusations and denials.

A number of famous actors and directors have been accused of harassment or assault and removed from high-profile productions. The artistic director of the country’s prestigious National Theater resigned amid a barrage of reports accusing him of sexual abuse and harassment, which he has furiously denied.

The bulk of the accusations — from men as well as women — have surfaced in media reports. Prosecutors in Athens are handling the most serious cases and have vowed to investigate all credible allegations.

A judicial official, who would speak only on the condition of anonymity, said he expected there to be more cases, although it was unclear how many would go to trial, given the passage of time since the alleged incidents and a lack of evidence.

The storm of accusations against household names and respected figures in the Greek arts world comes in one of Europe’s most conservative societies, where such abuses have long been whispered about but never openly discussed, let alone prosecuted.

Last month, Sofia Bekatorou, an Olympic sailing champion in 2004 and one of the country’s most popular athletes, publicly accused a top sailing official of sexually abusing her in 1998. It was the first high-profile accusation of sexual assault and abuse of power in Greece since the #MeToo movement rocked the established power structures in many other countries.

Her decision to speak out opened the floodgates for similar claims and has spurred an uncharacteristically open and passionate debate about sexual harassment and abuse in Greece, where, studies suggest, up to nine in 10 women face unwelcome advances in media, sports, politics and other male-dominated sectors.

In the world of the performing arts, professionals say, the problem is acute, and men are being targeted too.

The Greek actors’ union has received hundreds of phone calls in recent days from professionals alleging abuse.

Spyros Bibilas, the head of the union, told Greek television that actors have called him “sobbing,” adding that many of the alleged episodes occurred during Greece’s decade-long financial crisis, when job insecurity peaked and people were particularly vulnerable.

In a statement earlier this month, another union representing drama students at Greece’s National Theater denounced “countless cases of workplace bullying and sexist violence” as well as racism, homophobia and other forms of discrimination.

In response to the complaints, Greece’s culture ministry said it was overseeing an initiative to create a code of conduct for state-owned cultural institutions. The ministry has urged the national actors’ union to report any instances of abuse to the authorities.

“There is zero tolerance toward the abuse of power, sexual harassment, bullying, discrimination, and all forms of violence,” the deputy minister for Contemporary Culture, Nicholas Yatromanolakis, said in an email. “The cultural field is and should remain a place where dreams, not nightmares, come true.”

But some of the most high-profile figures who have been accused of abuse say they are victims of public hysteria, where guilt is presumed.

The artistic director of the country’s prestigious National Theater, Dimitris Lignadis, resigned on Feb. 6 after reports suggesting that he sexually harassed young actors. He denied those reports. Since he stepped down, more reports of sexual abuse have been leveled against him.

In his letter of resignation, which was made public by the culture ministry, Mr. Lignadis referred to a “toxic climate of rumors.”

His lawyer, Nikos Georgouleas, said Mr. Lignadis was being unfairly targeted and vilified. Since his resignation, posters with his photo have been plastered on bus stops in central Athens, warning that he will “pay for everything.”

“He feels like he’s in the eye of this storm, with new rumors emerging every day,” Mr. Georgouleas said by telephone, adding that Mr. Lignadis was ready to “offer any explanations necessary” to prosecutors.

Messages sent to the Facebook accounts of other acting professionals facing accusations were not answered, and further efforts to reach them were unsuccessful.

Harrys Tzortzakis, one of three male actors who have accused the film director Costas Zapas of sexual harassment, spoke of an “omerta” in the industry, using the word for the Mafia’s code of silence.

In a statement on his Facebook page on Jan. 30, Mr. Zapas rebutted the claims.

“I have never pressured anyone to conduct themselves in a way that they do not desire,” he wrote.

Mr. Tzortzakis told Greek television last week, “We’re scared of naming names in case they sue us or who knows what else.” He called on the Culture Ministry to make it clear that it stands by victims.

Three actresses issued a joint statement in late January accusing Kostas Spyropoulos, an actor and director, of sexual harassment. He issued a statement to Greek media through his lawyer apologizing for offending anyone, then sought an injunction against Greek television channels to bar them from mentioning his name in conjunction with the airing of the statement, saying it was false and violated his rights.

Jenny Botsi, one of the three actresses, expressed gratitude to Ms. Bekatorou for breaking a broader silence. Ms. Botsi was one of many who said Ms. Bekatorou had inspired them to come forward.

“She doesn’t know how much good she’s done,” Ms. Botsi told Greek television. “She’s opened up a road and thankfully we’ve grasped the opportunity.”

Seven actresses have accused another prominent director and actor, George Kimoulis, of verbal and physical abuse, though not sexual harassment. He has rejected the accusations as “unacceptable and false,” and is suing at least one of the actresses.

Still, organizers of the popular Athens and Epidaurus Festival have removed Mr. Kimoulis from a play scheduled to be staged at the ancient Epidaurus theater this summer.

In a statement, the organizers said they acted because of “the heavy shadow of recent developments.”

While the public accusations and subsequent departures have caused turmoil in the arts world, it remained unclear if they would ever be litigated in the courts.

The main problem for the accusers, according to legal experts, is that many of the alleged abuses date back years and prosecution may be limited by the country’s statute of limitations.

Under Greek law, rape can be prosecuted for up to 15 years. As for sexual harassment, the offense expires three months after the incident if legal action is not taken.

Although a debate has started about amending the law to bolster protection for victims of sex crimes, legal experts said it seemed unlikely that the government would make any sweeping changes.

Even Ms. Bekatorou’s case, which set off the current wave of accusations, has been shelved by prosecutors.

Ms. Bekatorou said that was why it was important for victims to “break their silence without delay.”

President Katerina Sakellaropoulou of Greece expressed her “great concern” about the wave of accusations.

“The one major benefit of this difficult period for the theater, and for other areas of the arts and other sectors, is the shaking off of fear,” she said. It was equally important, she said, that justice is delivered “in order to restore the dignity and the influence of personalities and institutions that society needs so much.”

Trial for Aung San Suu Kyi Begins in Secret

Trial for Aung San Suu Kyi Begins in Secret

The closed-door trial began in secret, with the two defendants appearing by video. The defense attorney wasn’t even aware what was happening. By the time he rushed to the court on Tuesday afternoon, it was all over, in less than an hour.

The trial of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s civilian leader who was ousted in a military coup two weeks ago, and U Win Myint, the deposed president, began on Tuesday. They face obscure charges that could land them in prison for six years and three years respectively.

Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi was accused of violating import restrictions after walkie-talkies and other foreign equipment were found in her villa compound. She was also charged with contravening a natural disaster management law by interacting with a crowd during the coronavirus pandemic, a charge that had not been disclosed publicly before.

Mr. Win Myint has been charged with breaching the natural disaster restrictions.

The first day of the trial of Myanmar’s elected leaders capped a dizzying two weeks in which the military, which ruled the country for nearly half a century before sharing some power with a civilian government, locked up hundreds of people, stripped away civil liberties for the entire population and steadfastly ignored the millions of protesters who have risen up against their seizure of power.

Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate who led Myanmar’s democratic opposition for decades, has not been seen publicly since soldiers grabbed her from her villa in the early morning hours of Feb. 1, but her smiling face has been omnipresent on posters and signs carrying by protesters during their daily rallies.

The trial, as with so many legal cases in Myanmar, was filled with anomalies. U Khin Maung Zaw, Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi’s lawyer, was originally told the court proceedings would begin on Monday. Then he was led to believe it would be Wednesday. At 11 a.m. Tuesday, he was suddenly notified that his client was appearing via video conference in a court in Naypyidaw, the capital.

“The timing seems like they don’t want public attention in this case,” said Mr. Khin Maung Zaw, a veteran human-rights lawyer.

Mr. Khin Maung Zaw has been told that the next trial session will be on March 1 and that the trial could last for six months to a year.

Mr. Win Myint, who served as a High Court lawyer before he became president, will represent himself.

Mr. Khin Maung Zaw said that he had already begun building his client’s defense, if only he would be allowed to present her case in court. While Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi was charged with violating import regulations, the walkie-talkies in question were used by her security team, which was assigned to her by the military-controlled Ministry of Home Affairs, he said.

“That question is the first question I will ask the court when I have a chance,” Mr. Khin Maung Zaw said. “Let’s see how they will answer it.”

Shortly after the trial of Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi and Mr. Win Myint began on Tuesday, the nation’s new rulers, who call themselves the State Administration Council, held a news conference in which they defended their treatment of Myanmar’s elected leaders.

“Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the president are detained in safe places, and their condition is good,” said Brig. Gen. Zaw Min Tun, who appeared in civilian clothes at his first meeting with the news media.

Dozens of government leaders were detained alongside Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi and Mr. Win Myint, but the charges against them have not been made public. A rollback of fundamental rights in Myanmar, announced last weekend, allows for indefinite detention.

General Zaw Min Tun slapped away questions about the possible effects of targeted financial sanctions from the West. He dismissed a civil disobedience movement that has united some 750,000 doctors, civil servants, railway workers, electricity providers and others as evidence of the protesters’ lack of patriotism.

And he defended the military’s repeated suspensions of telecommunications services and its bans on popular social media sites.

“We need some kind of restriction,” he said, “because Facebook is the main source of misinformation and fake news.”

As General Zaw Min Tun’s words were broadcast live on Facebook, people in Myanmar began a humorous campaign to report the news conference as disinformation that breached Facebook’s social media policies.

It was over before any action might have been taken.

30 Tweets By Dachshund Owners About How It Feels To Have Such Personalities As Pets

Sweet but ferocious. The internet is obsessed with dachshunds all of a sudden and it’s barktastic. These tiny wiener dogs are gorgeous, fun to look at, but… some owners suggested that they get aggressive if you even remotely threaten (i.e. get near) their loved ones. Or do anything else innocent to set them off.

It’s none other than comedian and author Sarah Cooper that we have to thank for the flood of information and hilarious anecdotes about sausage dogs. Her thread on Twitter went viral and people had a lot of fun sharing what it’s like to actually own a small yet fearsome doggo. Check out some of the most hilarious responses below and upvote the tweets that you liked the most.

The friendly team at the PDSA, the UK’s leading vet charity, was kind enough to help us out with some great insights about dachshunds, how to care for them and their long backs, as well as how to help temper their temper if they have one. PDSA vet Anna Ewers Clarke explained to Bored Panda that the breed, while popular for their faces and fun-loving personalities, has a higher risk of back issues because of their elongated backs. Bangladesh Court Sentences Five to Death for Killing American Blogger

Bangladesh Court Sentences Five to Death for Killing American Blogger

DHAKA, Bangladesh — A court in Bangladesh sentenced to death five members of an Islamist militant group on Tuesday for killing an American blogger critical of religious extremism six years ago.

Avijit Roy, a United States citizen of Bangladeshi origin, was hacked to death by machete-wielding assailants in February 2015 while returning home with his wife from a Dhaka book fair. His wife and fellow blogger Rafida Ahmed suffered head injuries and lost a finger.

“Charges against them were proved beyond any doubt. The court gave them the highest punishment,” the public prosecutor Golam Sarwar Khan said after the verdict, amid tight security at the Special Anti-Terrorism Tribunal in the capital, Dhaka.

The court also jailed one man for life in the attack, Mr. Khan said.

He said the six men convicted on Tuesday belong to the al Qaeda-inspired domestic militant group Ansar Ullah Bangla Team, which the police say was behind the murders of more than a dozen secular activists and bloggers.

Syed Ziaul Haq, a sacked army major believed to be the leader of the group and who masterminded the killing, and one other member of the group were tried in absentia and received death sentences, Mr. Khan said.

Nazrul Islam, a defense lawyer for the six men, said they would appeal against the sentences in the higher court.

Muslim-majority Bangladesh saw a string of deadly attacks between 2013 and 2016 targeting bloggers, secular activists and religious minorities, claimed by Islamic State or al Qaeda-aligned groups.

The most serious attack came in July 2016, when gunmen stormed a cafe in the diplomatic quarter of Dhaka and killed 22 people, most of them foreigners.

After the cafe siege, more than 100 suspected militants were killed and hundreds more were arrested as the government cracked down on Islamist groups to preserve its image as a moderate Muslim nation.
