You can choose any fabric that will suit your interior design. Another cool idea of how to reuse plastic bottles is to make a kebab machine. The supplies you will need a coke bottle, a can, and an elbow-shaped piece of PVC pipe and skewers to make perfect kebabs. This machine will speed up your cooking routine. Also, you can make cute cookie cutters out of plastic bottles. Check out the tutorial.
Another collection of awesome ideas is how to refresh your old furniture and even make some furniture that will make your room even cozier. There is a simple and cool idea on how to remake your boring dresser. Remove the drawers and hardware from them. Buy any sticky paper you like and glue to the surface. Color the rest part in any suitable color. Check out how to make a mirror folding table that will save a lot of space if your room is too small.
Check out surprising uses of club soda: use it to clean silver jewelry, to cook puffy pancakes, to clean coffee stains from tableware. One Album Released by 44 Labels. Is This the New Global Jukebox?

One Album Released by 44 Labels. Is This the New Global Jukebox?

“There may only be 500 people who are interested in the record I am putting out, but I am trying to find all 500,” said Phil Freeman, whose Burning Ambulance is one of two tiny American imprints working with Senyawa. “Wherever they are in the world, great.”

Shabara gushed when he discussed this scheme’s future feasibility, detailing organizational refinements he imagines. And Rabih Beaini, the owner of the German label handling manufacturing, suggested that bands big and small could increase their audience by recruiting a plethora of cooperative partners. “You could have 100 labels that reach obscure markets in countries where you might not normally sell your music,” Beaini said from Berlin. “It’s quite utopian.”

But Stephen O’Malley — the co-founder of metal duo Sunn O))) and a label owner — warned against reducing Senyawa’s idea into a novel strategy for sales. Several years ago, O’Malley invited Senyawa to perform with him at Europalia, a biennial arts festival, each event devoted to a different country’s culture. He reveled in their openness and enthusiasm.

“Senyawa are approaching this record as a way to connect with a lot of people, a way to collaborate,” O’Malley said from his home in Paris. “So why does it have to be sustainable as a business? Of course music is sustainable. It’s been around since the beginning of the species and transmitted the whole time.”

But the added connectivity is already changing the way Senyawa functions. This weekend, the group is presenting Pasar Alkisah, a two-day virtual festival of performances, D.J. sets, cooking classes and interviews, a massive act of coordination between the band and their dozens of partners.

In September, when Senyawa recorded “Alkisah,” it reconvened near Borobudur, the iconic Buddhist temple built on Java a millennium ago. Shabara and Suryadi isolated themselves in a friend’s sprawling home there, surrounded by a patch of jungle and a panorama of converging rivers and twin volcanoes. It was a postcard version of Indonesia — and a perfectly ironic place to capture a less stereotypical perspective on the world’s fourth most populous country.

“We are normal musicians like anyone else in the world who experiments. We just happen to be Indonesian,” Shabara said, his words arriving in a torrent. “If we want Indonesian musicians to flourish and be as highly respected as musicians from the West, we have to think we’re part of the world, not the ‘Third World.’”

People Are Explaining That What Happened To Texans Is Due To The Rich Being Greedy In 30 Posts

People Are Explaining That What Happened To Texans Is Due To The Rich Being Greedy In 30 Posts

The argument, as some experts put it, is simple: even though winter snaps like this one are rare, the power infrastructure in Texas needs to be overhauled, improved, and upgraded to ensure that it functions in times of crisis. What’s more, there are calls for more regulation of the electricity market so that the infrastructure is properly maintained.

As Rebecca Goetz, an associate professor of history at NYU puts it, deregulation might lead to lower prices for the consumers (i.e. us because we’re choosing the suppliers ourselves, thus making everyone compete for our attention by lowering their prices), but it also leads to confusion. Your electricity supplier might not be the company that fixes your grid when something happens to it. Furthermore, maintenance fees aren’t enough to maintain the infrastructure. Or, in other words, you get what you pay for.

Darya Chultsova and Yekaterina Andreyeva: Journalists given two years in prison for covering a protest in Belarus

Darya Chultsova and Yekaterina Andreyeva: Journalists given two years in prison for covering a protest in Belarus

Journalists Darya Chultsova, 23, and Yekaterina Andreyeva, 27, were detained in November while covering a demonstration in memory of an opposition activist who died in Minsk a few days before.

Local media reported that the activist, Roman Bondarenko, apparently died from injuries sustained after being beaten by riot police. The Prosecutor General of Belarus announced on Wednesday that an investigation into his death has been launched but said “that the involvement of employees of the internal affairs bodies in causing Bondarenko bodily harm has not been established.”

The court on Thursday ruled that Chultsova and Andreyeva are guilty of “organizing a demonstration that grossly violates public order.”

According to the investigators, Belsat reported, the journalists allegedly gathered protesters by talking about it on air, which then led to “interruptions of public transport in the area.” Chultsova and Andreyeva maintain they are innocent.

“I have everything: youth, a job that I love, prominence and, most importantly, a clear conscience. I want to devote all my energy to the creation of Belarus without political repression. I demand an acquittal for myself, for my colleagues and for hundreds of political prisoners,” Andreyeva said at a previous court hearing on Wednesday, according to local media.

Belarussian human rights group Viasna designated Chultsova and Andreyeva as political prisoners and said charges against them are drawn up because of their journalistic work. Belsat is a politically independent TV channel based in Poland that primarily reports on Belarus. Its budget relies on Polish state subsidies.

Chultsova (left) and Andreyeva were detained in November while covering a demonstration in memory of an opposition activist.

Belarus has been engulfed in mass protests since presidential elections in August 2020, after Alexander Lukashenko, who has been in power since 1994, secured his sixth term. Independent observers said the election was rigged, and tens of thousands poured onto the streets to demand Lukashenko’s resignation.

Riot police have cracked down harshly, beating and detaining thousands of protesters. CNN and other outlets previously reported on torture in detention centers described by former detainees and their families as well as persecution opposition activists faced in Belarus.
“Just look at Darya and Katsiaryna [the Belarusian spelling of Yekaterina] — strong, smiling, and saying goodbyes to their loved ones through bars. Lukashenka [Lukashenko] can’t break us,” exiled Belarussian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya said in a tweet on Thursday.

Coronavirus Vaccine Nears Final Tests in Cuba. Tourists May Be Inoculated.

Coronavirus Vaccine Nears Final Tests in Cuba. Tourists May Be Inoculated.

HAVANA — People wait in line for four hours to buy detergent in Havana. Cuban pharmacies are out of pain medication. There are national bread shortages.

And yet the Cuban government says it is on the brink of an extraordinary scientific achievement: the mass production of a coronavirus vaccine invented on the island.

One of the four vaccines developed by Cuban scientists will enter a final phase of testing next month, a crucial step toward regulatory approval that, if successful, could put the island on the path to inoculate its entire population and begin exports abroad by year’s end.

If the vaccine proves safe and effective, it would hand the Cuban government a significant political victory — and a shot at rescuing the nation from economic ruin. For a country that has for decades touted its sophisticated health care system as evidence of the benefits of socialism, the vaccine also offers a unique public relations opportunity.

The vaccine heading for a final phase of trials is called Sovereign 2, in a nod to the pride the island takes in its autonomy, despite decades of hostility from its neighbor to the north. Already, Cuba is floating the idea of enticing tourists to its shores with the irresistible cocktail of sun, sand and a shot of Sovereign 2.

Vicente Vérez, one of the scientists leading the team that developed the vaccine, has said that the island could offer vaccinations to all foreigners who travel there.

“It’s not just medicine and humanitarianism; there’s a big economic payoff if they can get the virus under control,” said Richard Feinberg, a Cuba expert at the University of California San Diego. “It will be not only immediate income, but a boost to the reputation of the Cuban pharmaceutical biotech sector, which will enable them to market other medical products.”

Cuban scientists say the government will probably give away some doses to poor countries, in keeping with its longstanding practice of strengthening international relations by donating medicine and sending doctors to address public health crises abroad.

“Cuba always donated vaccines,” said Gerardo Guillén, a scientist developing two of the four vaccines at the state-owned Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology. “We help other countries.”

Cuba began to pour money into biotech in the 1980s, as part of Fidel Castro’s drive to make the nation self-sufficient in the face of a U.S. embargo that made it difficult to obtain drugs produced abroad.

The investment in public health gave rise to dozens of medical research institutions and a surplus of doctors, which Cuba sends to other countries in medical missions.

In 2019, the leasing of doctors, nurses and technicians brought in $5.4 billion, twice as much as tourism, a major driver of the economy.

The island’s biotech sector is also well developed. Cuba makes eight of the 12 vaccines administered to children on the island and exports vaccines to more than 30 countries.

“It is a biotech juggernaut,” said Gail Reed, the editor of MEDICC Review, a peer-reviewed journal of Cuban and developing world medicine, about the island. “The accomplishments are undeniable.”

Cuban scientists have also developed innovative treatments, including a lung cancer vaccine, which is in trials with the New York-based Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.

“Sometimes people think because it’s Cuba, they’re just making these drugs in their garage and giving them to people, and that’s not true,” said Candace Johnson, Roswell Park’s president. “They’re very much practicing with exactly the same high standards that every other country does producing these drugs.”

Ms. Johnson said that Cuban scientists demonstrated that they “adhered to all the appropriate standards and controls” before she was able to bring the lung cancer drug to New York.

Producing the coronavirus vaccine was made more complicated by the Trump administration’s tightening of sanctions on Cuba. Scientists say they haven’t been able to buy all the equipment and raw materials they need, including spectrometers used for quality control. The two research groups working on the drug have only one that is powerful enough to analyze the vaccine, Dr. Guillén said, and it’s about 20 years old.

“Cubans not only are able to make old cars still work, they can manage to make old equipment work,” said Mitchell Valdes Sosa, the director of the Cuban Neurosciences Center.

The Sovereign 2 vaccine has progressed through two phases of trials and is set to enter a third phase, where it will be tested on around 150,000 people in Cuba and in Iran, which has shown interest in purchasing the drug. Mexico is also in talks with the Cubans to participate in the third phase of trials.

Like the vaccine being developed by Novavax, a U.S. company, Sovereign 2 is a protein-based vaccine that contains part of the coronavirus. It requires three doses administered in two-week intervals and, unlike the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, does not need to be stored in deep freeze — which may be a draw for poorer countries that often lack the equipment to keep so many doses frozen.

Dr. Vérez said in a text message that Sovereign 2 is “very safe with very few adverse effects,” a requirement to move onto a third and final phase of trials. Scientists will not publish its efficacy rate until the trials are completed. It is still unclear whether the vaccine will protect against new variants, one of which has already been detected on the island.

The government is optimistic and boasts that it could produce 100 million doses this year, more than enough to vaccinate the entire country of 11 million and, possibly, foreign visitors.

But Cuba may not have the equipment necessary to manufacture its vaccine at that scale. U.S. sanctions have raised the cost of purchasing raw materials and have complicated transfers of funds into the island.

“It might get difficult to purchase enough vials for their 100 million doses,” said José Luis DiFabio, the former World Health Organization representative in Cuba. “Or if you have equipment that needs to be repaired, you don’t have access to the parts that you might need. Or instead of getting something in a week, you get it in a month.”

And opening the doors to vaccine-hungry tourists may create new problems.

Cuba limited the spread of the virus early on, leaning on its tight control of the population and an efficient system for delivering health care. Anyone diagnosed with the virus was immediately hospitalized and put on a cocktail of Cuban and generic drugs.

The government isolated their close contacts and monitored them for symptoms. Cuba reported just 12,225 confirmed coronavirus cases and 146 deaths in 2020, among the lowest rates in the Western Hemisphere.

Then, following the decision to open international air travel in November after a seven-month closure, case numbers spiked. Authorities are now battling the worst outbreak since the pandemic began, with more cases registered in January than in all of last year, and recently set a 9 p.m. curfew in Havana.

The government hasn’t yet announced any specific plans for inoculating tourists, but will have to take into consideration the length of time it would take to deliver all three shots required by Sovereign 2.

Dr. Guillén said that rather than stay on the island for a month and a half, tourists may be given the option to get one shot on the island, and pack the other two doses in their suitcase for vaccination back home.

The plan to open vaccination to tourists appears, to some, to be a risky and shrewdly capitalist gambit to attract visitors, and with them the hard currency the island desperately needs. The combination of the pandemic and sanctions have created the worst economic crisis the country has experienced since the fall of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, experts say.

Cuban scientists, however, insist the goal is to spread health. Any profit, they say, is merely a side effect.

“We are not a multinational where return on investment is our No. 1 priority,” Mr. Vérez, who is leading development of the vaccine, said in a recent news conference. “Our first priority is to create health, and return on investment is a consequence of that.”

Kind Texans Are Bringing Animals Inside To Keep Them Warm And Safe During The Cold Wave (19 Pics)

All eyes are on the southern US states, most of all, on Texas. A powerful winter storm has brought everything to a standstill this week, leaving millions without power, and has claimed the lives of at least 21 people in the area. But this dark and frigid time is also a time of bravery and compassion. Texans are bringing their pets, farm animals, and wild animals inside their homes to protect them from the icy cold and to keep them warm. They’re also rushing to save sea turtles. If this isn’t proof that our true humanity shines through in the toughest times, I don’t know what is.

People shared photos of the efforts to help animals after journalist Yashar Ali started up a Twitter thread. Have a scroll down to see how people are lending a helping hand to our animal companions and how the cold unites us in our love for one another. Remember to upvote the pictures that you think are great representations of our kindness.

Bored Panda reached out to the ‘Sea Turtle, Inc.’ team whose volunteers are saving thousands of turtle lives in Texas. Read on for what their representative had to say.

Handforth Parish Council’s latest Zoom meeting was even worse than the viral original

Handforth Parish Council’s latest Zoom meeting was even worse than the viral original

But on Wednesday, still recovering from their reluctant brush with fame, members of Handforth Parish Council convened again to give the people what they wanted: A sequel.

The group’s first meeting went viral around the world earlier this month thanks to its enthralling dysfunction, petty disagreements and Machiavellian maneuvers, as councilors vied for power and senior officials were dramatically ousted to the virtual waiting room.

Their follow-up meeting was widely anticipated. And, if possible, it unraveled into deeper chaos still, as members of the public butted in and the main characters reckoned with their newfound celebrity.

But it was notably missing the lead character from the original — Jackie Weaver, an adviser to local councils, who won plaudits for rebuffing the abuse of some members, booting the council’s chairman Brian Tolver from the discussion and claiming the moniker “Britney Spears” for herself in the process.

And, if the original call was “The Godfather” of Zoom debacles, the follow-up felt more like “Grease 2” or “Jaws 3-D,” largely absent of the organic humor of the first iteration thanks to the frequent interjections of members of the public desperately trying and failing to land a joke.

Weaver told CNN on Thursday she was “saddened” by the public’s interruptions. But her verdict on some of the officials was equally tough.

“I fear that at least one of the councilors not present last night remains unrepentant and Councilor Tolver did not seem to accept any responsibility for the events of that evening in December,” she said.

CNN has contacted Tolver for comment. He told PA Media after the first meeting that Weaver “had no status to speak other than when invited,” adding: “I have reason to be angry.”

“I have not experienced similar behavior in other councils,” Weaver told CNN, reflecting on the first meeting — “although in local democracy, debate can get quite heated.”

What you need to know about the World’s Worst Zoom Call: Part Two

Tolver, the chairman whose ejection by Weaver prompted the meltdown in the original meeting, opened Wednesday’s discussion by noting it was “scheduled to take up to half an hour, we hope.”

What followed was three hours of disarray, watched via live stream by thousands of people on YouTube — undoubtedly the biggest audience a council meeting in Handforth has ever received. A few members of the public joined the Zoom call itself — some dressed in bucket hats, others in front of whimsical backgrounds.

Viewers were treated first to some exposition, as councilors caught the audience up on their off-screen story arcs (Alan Murdoch’s starting to get some nice weather in his garden, and chairman Tolver’s voice has dried up because he’s been “answering the phone to an awful lot of people”).

Lawyer tells judge 'I'm not a cat' after a Zoom filter mishap in virtual court hearing

But participants quickly addressed the elephant in the Zoom. “There’s a lot of interest in this meeting because of recent viral events,” Tolver said, warning his fellow councilors. “It may well be seen by a very wide audience. Various TV stations are taking note.”

“You probably don’t want to appear in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, playing the part of Julie’s iPad,” he joked to an unmoved audience. Lloyd Webber, the musical legend who created a number of popular shows, performed “a song for Jackie Weaver” earlier this month.

“One member of the public used a brief Anglo-Saxon phrase and thus earned immortality in the pages of The Times newspaper,” Tolver went on, a reference to one of many quotable lines from the prior discussion. “You can avoid this by clicking your mute button.”

Unfortunately, Tolver failed to realize that he could also mute members of the public who had joined. He and his colleagues spent much of the call batting back jokes from those participants, who quoted back at them lines from the first meeting.

There were intentional disruptions, plus technological interruptions. When one participant failed to mute his computer, Tolver jokingly warned: “You’ll be banned to Peru if you’re not careful.”

Jackie Weaver’s verdict

The first meeting dominated the internet and hooked obsessed viewers (at least until an attorney addressed a Texas court while trapped inside a cat filter).

And the biggest star to come from the call was undoubtedly Weaver, whose no-nonsense response to the significant amount of nonsense unfolding in front of her won her praise and spots on national broadcasters.

She told CNN on Thursday that her instant celebrity status had been “surreal,” adding that she’s enjoyed mixing with people she admired — like Anton du Beke, a TV dancer who met Weaver virtually. “And on the other (hand) I have been privileged to have so many people reaching out to me to find out more about local democracy.”

But her response to Wednesday’s meeting was mixed. She continued her widely-watched fued with Tolver, criticizing him for failing to take responsibility for the December fiasco. “However, we did see that the other councilors continue to quietly try to move forward on issues for the local community,” she said.

Jackie Weaver, the star of the first meeting.

Weaver was less pleased with members of the public who hijacked the call, with repeated attempts at humor that ultimately did little besides prevent the councilors from doing their job.

“I was saddened by that,” she told CNN. “By all means get interested in your local council meeting, but it is not a bull pit,” Weaver added.

Weaver wasn’t present at the second meeting, as the council has now reinstated its clerk, but she said she will continue to assist the group in the future.

And the viewing audience will surely hope she does — so that the unanswered plot lines of the first call finally get the resolution they deserve.

Men Are Listing Things That Society Deems ‘Too Girly’ But They Like Them Anyway (48 Posts)

Stereotypes heaped on top of even more stereotypes. Sometimes it feels like life is just one never-ending generalization about how people should act instead of looking at the reality of how they actually behave. Case in point, the men of Reddit have been sharing all the things—big and small—that they love doing but that society considers to be feminine or ‘just for girls.’

And, you know what? The thread, started up by redditor Schright_dwute, is surprisingly refreshing. It’s full of honesty, good humor, and so many genuine answers, it might just help you relax and forget all of your troubles for a moment. It’s pleasant to read about people talking about what they love.

Check out some of the best responses below, upvote your fave ones, and let us know what you thought of the topic in the comment section below.

Things-Men-Like-Considered-FeminineCrying and showing strong emotion is not something I like but everyone always says “boys don’t cry” and I’m sick of that.

Things-Men-Like-Considered-FeminineSkincare! Using basic toner, moisturizer, and sun screen. It has long been considered ‘girly’ to do these but it leads to interesting conversations with girls! Also it feels good to have a routine before bed and taking care of my skin!

EpikTin , The Creative Exchange Report

Relationship expert Dan Bacon, the founder of The Modern Man, told Bored Panda upfront that both men and women are completely free to do whatever ‘girly’ or ‘manly’ activities they want. However, Dan highlighted the simple fact that people will always judge one another and there’s nothing we can do to change that. Instead, it’s best to focus on how we feel about being judged.

“Even the most popular and most liked people in the world are negatively judged. There’s no escaping being judged. So, you just have to do what you want to do in life. You are here to live your own life on your own terms, not the life that others seem to want you to live.”

He continued: “It may upset some people, but they are not living your life. They don’t feel the way you feel. You’ve just got to go ahead and spend your time doing the things you really want to do deep down.”

Things-Men-Like-Considered-FeminineI’m a guy with hair down to the bottom of my shoulder blades. One evening, I was hanging out with a bunch of friends when one of them decided she wanted to braid my hair. Oh my God did it feel amazing! I love the feeling of someone else playing with my hair.

TealGame Report

However, Dan also pointed out that the reality is that many women will negatively judge a man who openly engages in ‘girly’ activities when it comes to feeling attracted and considering them for romantic, committed relationships.

“If a woman goes on a date with a guy who loves to knit, arrange flowers around the house, fuss over his sense of fashion and wear a little make up to look at good as he can, she may worry that he could secretly be gay or bisexual. She may not be right, but she could suspect that based on the way he thinks and behaves,” relationship expert Dan explained.

Some women’s bodywash/soaps/lotions. The men’s stuff just smell like overaggressive nose-destroyers. The fact that these products are marketed to two different sexes doesn’t even make sense…

Things-Men-Like-Considered-FeminineBallet. I’ve always liked the look of ballet dancing, and when I was 20, after I got into amateur theatre, I started training in ballet. I’ve been very fit most of my life, I played football for 10 years, won athletics at school and I cycled everyday. Out of all the fitness training I have done over the years, Ballet is by the far the most difficult “fitness training” I have ever done, and a hell of a lot more fun than anything else.

GeneralStoic , Jonathan Battistella Report

Things-Men-Like-Considered-FeminineSewing and designing clothing. I’m not talking about screen printing cringe phrases on bulk purchased shirts I mean full on outfits and garments.

itchyyanklee , Sharon McCutcheon Report

“She may also worry that if she were to get into a committed relationship with him, he might end up cheating on her with men. Alternatively, she may worry that she’ll end up feeling like she’s in a relationship with a woman who is trapped in a man’s body, rather than a man who is happy and comfortable being a more traditional, masculine man,” he said.

“Once again, she may not be right about her suspicions, but it would be understandable for her to be concerned about those types of outcomes with him if those are not the relationship outcomes she wants,” the expert explained.

“So, while it’s totally fine for a man to engage in traditionally ‘girly’ or ‘feminine’ activities, it’s important to understand that what people accept (i.e. men can do girly things, women can do manly things) and what people feel sexually attracted to, are often two completely different things altogether.”

Things-Men-Like-Considered-FemininePina coladas. Honestly any fruity drink. Got me f***ed up if you think I’m not gonna enjoy every sip of a drink I’m paying for

eric_3196 , Vitor Pinto Report

Schright_dwute’s thread got more than 18k upvotes, 69 awards, and got over a whopping 11.7k comments which just goes to show that a great question can start a wildfire of a discussion. Their fellow redditors debated everything from how nice hugs are (they really are) to how powerful ballet is and more.

However fun and refreshing the thread on r/AskReddit might be, it does raise some serious issues. Specifically, about how gender stereotypes are deeply rooted in society. As well as how people can feel pressured to heavily edit their passions, goals, and aspirations just for the sake of appearances and their reputations.

I haven’t seen this yet, so… color. I feel like society wants me to to just wear black/grey/white/navy blue, and it’s stupid. I have a pair of pink jeans that i love!!

Things-Men-Like-Considered-FeminineMy purse. Okay, it’s a brown leather bag, like a mini messenger bag, but seriously–it’s my purse. I carry my phone, my keys, a little cash, a couple masks, some floss, hand sanitizer, a pen, a couple guitar picks–you know, purse stuff. My wife loves it–it’s been years since I’ve asked her to shove my junk in her purse.

93WhiteStrat , Arno Senoner Report

If you truly love something, whether it’s an activity or a ‘girly’ product, you’ll embrace it no matter what anyone else says. Who cares if the world thinks you’re effeminate? You’ll be the best darn knitter on Planet Earth and you’ll change the world.

But that’s far, far easier to say than to do with unseen (but always present) expectations breathing down your neck. Your confidence will be tested when you’ve got countless people looking at you weirdly like you’ve done something ‘wrong.’

Researchers reviewing theories of masculinity point out that men are expected to maintain a ‘stiff upper lip’ during times of emotional distress and upheaval. In short, men are expected to remain masculine through “emotional control, rationality, responsibility, and successful action.” Emotional expression is ‘allowed’ only in private but not in public.

Things-Men-Like-Considered-FeminineManicures. I’ve only had it done twice but man it was so relaxing. Just having a moment of peace to myself not to mention the way my hands felt afterwards worth every penny.

Makeup. My skin isn’t the best and I have a few acne scars that I don’t love, so one time I borrowed some concealer from my sister who’s the same skin tone as me and put it on. It was amazing, I couldn’t tell I had it on at all, and it worked like a magic eraser for all my blemishes.

I don’t use it all the time, but it does make me feel better if I have some on before going out sometimes. And no one ever expects it cause I’m a fairly manly looking brown dude with a pretty big beard. Little do they know I go home and wipe my makeup off while watching New Girl.

Back in 1976, sociologist Robert Brannon put together an American model of manhood and what the ‘script’ for men in the 20th century was like. There were four main things that made a man, well, a man, in the context of the culture in the US.

According to Brannon, one of the four key tenets was not leaving room for any ‘sissy stuff,’ which meant putting vulnerability and openness to the side. The emphasis was on bottling up emotions so you weren’t perceived as weak.

When I am depressed, I just listen to sad songs and cry instead of drinking or keeping everything bottled up inside. Also, deodorants designed for women.

000003eyes Report

The second tenet was that men ought to strive for power, respect, and maintain a positive reputation among their peers. Social status and financial success were the name of the game back then and it was expected of you to try and become a leader in your local community.

The final two tenets of the American masculinity blueprint, according to Brannon’s research, involved being confident and self-reliant like a ‘sturdy oak’ that’s always graceful under pressure, as well as being tough, aggressive, and adventurous.

Echoes of this blueprint can still be felt to this very day. Whether you see these features as something to be strived for or avoided, biological or merely social, is entirely up to you. But there are some major problems that come with repressed emotions.

Being unable to meet expectations while also being forced to keep your issues and emotions to yourself can lead to mental health issues, including depression which can, in turn, lead to suicide.

Things-Men-Like-Considered-FeminineI love lavender, vanilla, and baby powder scented things.

It’s funny to me how some scents are considered feminine.

When you’re ‘not allowed’ to ask for help or to talk about the problems that are making your life hell, you’re leaving yourself more vulnerable than you would if you reached out, saying that you’re unable to deal with your issues yourself. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s facing reality and the brave thing to do.

After Crushing Protests, President of Belarus Exacts Revenge

After Crushing Protests, President of Belarus Exacts Revenge

MOSCOW — In a ruling that reflected the broader crackdown on dissent by President Aleksandr G. Lukashenko of Belarus, a court on Thursday sentenced two young journalists to two years in prison for reporting from a demonstration against his rule.

A district court in the capital, Minsk, ruled that the journalists, Catarina Andreeva, 27, and Darja Chulcova, 23, incited unrest by reporting for the Polish television channel Belsat via a video stream from a protest rally.

The court said that, by doing so, the journalists had attracted more people to the rally, creating more work for law enforcement and obstructing public transport.

The journalists said they were doing their job of informing the public.

“Every day I risked my life and health to do my job,” Ms. Andreeva told the court on Wednesday. In the end, she said, she could take comfort from the knowledge that her “conscience is clean.”

The Thursday sentencing was the latest episode in a campaign to silence all forms of opposition to Mr. Lukashenko, who has ruled Belarus for over 26 years.

And after months of sustained repression, Mr. Lukashenko appears confident that he has weathered the greatest threat to his power in decades.

“We have kept our country intact,” Mr. Lukashenko said last week in a speech during a meeting with allies. “For now.”

Speaking for more than four hours in a packed auditorium — with few in the crowd seeming to be wearing masks to guard against the spread of coronavirus — he said “the blitzkrieg” against Belarus, launched by Western states, had failed.

The meeting, which drew more than 2,500 pro-Lukashenko bureaucrats and activists from across the country, was carefully choreographed to assert that the wave of protests was an external attack that was successfully defeated.

Mr. Lukashenko’s iron grip on power seemed to be slipping in August, after a presidential election widely regarded as rigged to ensure his victory.

Demonstrations calling for his ouster drew hundreds of thousands of people, eclipsing government-organized rallies in his defense. At a tractor factory, workers, always regarded as Mr. Lukashenko’s core electorate, booed him.

At the time, Mr. Lukashenko looked increasingly disoriented, seeking help from President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, his authoritarian ally. The Kremlin threw him a lifeline by offering a loan and dispatching a group of propaganda specialists to Belarus.

Backed by Mr. Putin, the Belarusian leader had no need to look for any approval from the West. He was free to go as far as possible to make sure protests were suppressed.

He unleashed a crackdown on the protests with a level of brutality unseen in Europe for decades.

The police used tear gas and rubber bullets against peaceful protests indiscriminately. Hundreds were tortured in police precincts and detention centers. At least four people were killed. Overall, more than 1,800 criminal cases were opened against activists, according to Viasna, a human rights group. More than 33,000 were detained by law enforcement following the presidential election, the group said.

In retrospect, Moscow’s help appeared to be key in allowing Mr. Lukashenko to outlast the biggest wave of protests during his rule, said Yauheni Preiherman, director of the Minsk Dialogue Council on Foreign Relations, a think tank.

After months of determined civic action, the repression took its toll and the protests slowly lost momentum. At the same time, the increasingly emboldened president unleashed the full force of his robust security apparatus to take revenge against a movement that pushed his rule to the brink of collapse.

On Wednesday, a court in Minsk began hearing the case against Viktor Babariko, Mr. Lukashenko’s most popular political opponent, according to recent polls.

Mr. Babariko, who headed a Russian state-owned bank in Minsk, has been regarded as a serious threat to Mr. Lukashenko because of his popularity and because of his connection to Moscow. He was arrested in June on corruption charges and is now facing up to 15 years in prison.

On Tuesday, police officers also raided 90 offices and apartments belonging to the few remaining civil society organizations in Belarus, including Viasna, a prominent human rights group, a nongovernmental union of journalists, and an independent trades union.

Other people were sentenced to administrative arrests for drawing the traditional white and red flag associated with the opposition on walls of their own houses.

Activists, who were collecting money to help protesters pay their fines, were accused of financing unrest. At the beginning of February, the police arrested two members of a prominent Minsk-based NGO helping people with disabilities. They now face criminal charges.

Artyom Shraibman, the founder of Sense-Analytics, a Minsk consulting firm and research group, called ongoing crackdown a “counterrevolution,” saying that Belarus “didn’t see such repressions since the Stalinist times.”

Apple Makes Its Syringe Emoji a Vaccine Dose

Apple Makes Its Syringe Emoji a Vaccine Dose

As millions get vaccinated, Apple is making a design change to its syringe emoji, swapping an image with drops of blood at the end of the emoji’s needle for one that looks more like a vaccine.

The redesigned emoji is available only to members of the company’s beta program but will be publicly available with iOS 14.5. While new emojis are more difficult to approve, changing an emoji’s design can enact a similar result on a faster timeline, according to Keith Broni, the deputy emoji officer at Emojipedia, a service that archives the design and usage trends of emojis.

The syringe emoji dates to 1999 and had been used mainly to illustrate blood donations in Japan. The emoji was often used in discussions around blood donations and even tattooing, Mr. Broni said.

“When you provide someone with a communication tool, they will use it as they see fit,” Mr. Broni said. “We’ve seen many different emojis take on many different connotations.”

Mr. Broni said he had started to notice a spike in the usage of the emoji late last year, and saw that the conversations people were having on Twitter while using it had pivoted to talk about coronavirus vaccines.

Mr. Broni said he expected the change from Apple to be a permanent one, and that other technology companies would be likely to follow suit. He said the emoji that resembles a vaccine injection could be used more readily and that removing the blood would make the emoji more flexible and less intimidating.

87 Of The Funniest Advertising Fails

87 Of The Funniest Advertising Fails

There are so many ways an advertising campaign, a billboard, a print ad, and a commercial can go wrong. But one of the greatest faux pas is “false advertising.” The term refers to ads that use misleading, dishonest, and plain “false” assumptions in their content in order to promote or market products and services.

One should remember to respect the consumers who, as a result of the ad, may feel lied to and fooled. Such negative ads rapidly create a very bad image of a brand, and it can lead to various biases about it.

As a result, sales immediately suffer and it takes ages to gain back consumers’ trust in the brand. Thus, false advertising is one of the most dangerous mistakes you can make while advertising your product and it never, ever pays off.

HOW TO MAKE A PARENT’S JOB EASIER

If you want to teach your kid to be organized you can make an effective visual reminder. You will need a white wall clock, colored markers and a piece of paper. Remove the plastic cover off the clock and divide the day into sections of different colors. Every color will correspond to an activity you need. For example, yellow is for homework, purple for playtime and red for bedtime. On the piece of paper make a list of colors and activities and your kid will know the schedule. Find a place and hang the clock. Remember that the place should be comfortable for kids to see the clock. And tape the list below. Isn’t it a cool idea?

Frigid Weather and Global Warming

Frigid Weather and Global Warming

Want to get The Morning by email? Here’s the sign-up.

Good morning. A Times reporter explains the connection between frigid weather and global warming.

Much of the Pacific Northwest is blanketed in snow. Texas continues to endure frigid weather and electricity outages. Another winter storm is spreading across much of the country. Today, snow or freezing rain may fall on Washington, New York and Boston.

To make sense of this week’s cold spell and storms, I spoke with John Schwartz, a Times reporter who focuses on the climate. Our conversation follows.

Question: Let’s start with a simple question on some people’s minds — How do you think about record-low temperatures hammering parts of the U.S. at the same time that we’re experiencing global warming?

John Schwartz: It does sound counterintuitive! Those who deny climate science love to declare that there’s no such thing as climate change whenever the weather turns cold. But weather remains variable, and cold weather in winter still happens, even if the overall warming trend means that winters are getting milder.

Q: And is there any relationship between this week’s storms and climate change? I noticed that the climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe uses the phrase “global weirding.”

John: There’s interesting science that suggests the effects of a warming world have something to do with these sudden bursts of Arctic cold, as well. The cold air at the top of the world, the polar vortex, is usually held in place by the circulating jet stream. The Northern Hemisphere’s warming appears to be weakening the jet stream, and when sudden blasts of heat in the stratosphere punch into the vortex, that Arctic air can spill down into the middle latitudes.

Q: Are there any other changing patterns of winter weather that may be connected to climate change?

John: A warming atmosphere can hold more moisture, so when you do get storms you can expect to see heavier rain and snow. There’s also fascinating research that links a warming Arctic to increased frequency of the broad range of extreme winter weather in parts of the United States. It’s known as “warm-Arctic/cold-continents pattern,” a phenomenon that’s still being studied.

Q: What are the recent weather trends — during winter or not — where the evidence most strongly suggests climate change is playing a role?

John: In the United States, we’re seeing longer wildfire seasons because of hotter, drier conditions, and our hurricanes are becoming more destructive in several ways, including flooding and storm surge. It’s even worsening the misery of pollen season. We’ve always had floods, fires and storms, but climate change adds oomph to many weather events.

I realize I’m repeating myself here, but scientists are still hashing out all of this. While the science underlying the links between human emissions and climate change is rock solid, some of the particulars, such as whether climate change will cause us to see more frequent blasts from the polar vortex, are still being debated. And that’s as it should be.

Live jazz — in intimate clubs like the Blue Note in New York, the Green Mill in Chicago and Fritzel’s in New Orleans — has been one of the many casualties of the pandemic. Some clubs have closed permanently, while others are experimenting with outdoor events or hoping to welcome audiences later this year.

Until then, the closest thing to live jazz inside a club can be a recording of a performance with an audience. “In jazz, moment-to-moment exchange is the coin of the realm, so everybody who’s present when the music is being made has a role to play,” Giovanni Russonello, who covers jazz for The Times, told us.That’s why the live album has such a long and important history in jazz, from the earliest days of the LP era through today.”

A good example is the new album “Let My People Go” by the duet of Archie Shepp — a saxophonist and 83-year-old protégé of John Coltrane — and Jason Moran — a pianist and so-called MacArthur genius. On the album, Shepp and Moran play standards by Coltrane, Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk. “Much of it has a gritty, unvarnished quality, as if played in an out-of-the-way roadhouse,” Martin Johnson writes in The Wall Street Journal.

INCREDIBLE FOOD TRICKS

Did you know that there are a lot of secrets about how to make food look irresistible on TV? Usually, burgers, fries, and ice-cream that we see in commercials look mouth-watering but reality never meets expectations. Food should look delicious so that you will want to eat it. In this video, we reveal some secrets of making perfect food photos and you will be shocked by the process of photo making. Sometimes it’s impossible to make a whole photo session of a product like it, for example, melts too fast as ice-cream does. That’s why the ice-cream, in fact, is replaced with instant mashed potatoes. Sounds crazy? Yes, but it’s the only way to make perfect ice-cream shots. Mash potatoes are colored with any color need. The same situation usually occurs when you need to photo cakes with whipped cream. Cream melts too fast and looks awful. So, photographers usually interlay cake layers with cardboard to keep them dry and replace cream with shaving cream. When you buy French fries, they look very disappointing. There is a whole technique on how to make French fries look attractive: kitchen sponge and toothpicks are used to secure fries for making a photo. Photographers add aspirin to soft drinks to look them refreshing and fizzy.
Check out more kitchen ideas that will ease your life: make a pasta at home; add salt to the milk and it will last longer in the fridge; cover cheese with cheese wax and it will last longer, store cookies in a can with a piece of bread and it will be soft; place celery into the bag with bread to prevent the appearance of mold. Moreover, you will find a cool recipe of black ice-cream that you can make at home in 5 minutes!

Communities of Color Confront Many Barriers to Vaccinations

Communities of Color Confront Many Barriers to Vaccinations

In the Brownsville area of Brooklyn, Renee Muir, the director of development and community relations at the BMS Family Health Center, said she is developing a survey to gather evidence of the challenges affecting the community. Many residents have been deeply affected by the virus because of adverse health conditions and unemployment.

“Now you’re talking about people making decisions to spend $6 round trip, or eating, or paying a phone bill,” Ms. Muir said about residents traveling to get a vaccine.

On messaging platforms like WhatsApp and on social media, Latinos have been exposed to vaccine misinformation, said Dr. Valeria Daniela Lucio Cantos, an infectious disease specialist at Emory University. She has been working to help Latinos understand the vaccine and make appointments.

“There’s this emphasis on the risk and not enough on the benefits of the vaccines,” she said.

But while many older Americans struggle with the online system to register for a vaccine, sites only available in English presented an additional barrier, Dr. Cantos said.

“It feels like the system built for vaccine distribution did not have the Latinx community in mind,” she said, using the gender-neutral term for Latinos. She added that vaccine sites asking for Social Security numbers or insurance numbers made it difficult for undocumented immigrants to feel safe.

As vaccine supplies ramp up, Dr. Paulina Rebolledo, an assistant professor at Emory, hopes that officials begin to rethink their approach by mobilizing with organizations within communities of color that are trusted by residents and speak various languages.

“We, on the provider side or the health care side, can try to do more to reach patients and have them hear our voices,” she said. “It’s their overall health we’re trying to work on, and this is just an integral part of the movement.”
