How China is devastating Australia’s billion-dollar wine industry

How China is devastating Australia’s billion-dollar wine industry

White lived in Shanghai for several years, setting up a network of distributors to sell his Jarressa Estate wine to the booming Chinese market, where demand for foreign wines among the middle class was growing fast.

By mid-2020, more than 96% of Jaressa Estate’s wines were being sold to consumers in China, up to seven million bottles a year. But in November, Beijing announced crippling tariffs on Australian wine as part of an “anti-dumping investigation” into whether those wines were being sold too cheaply in China. The government said the probe was prompted by complaints from Chinese wine producers.

White says he hasn’t sold a single bottle since.

Grapes on the vine at Tahbilk winery in central Victoria in February 2020.

Currently, hundreds of thousands of bottles of Jarressa Estate wine are piled on pallets in a warehouse in Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, waiting for the tariffs to be lifted.

“It’s hurting us dramatically. We had a lot of supplies that needed to be paid for and all these orders that were planned to shift, so it’s left us in an awkward situation,” White said.

He isn’t alone. Hundreds of Australian wine producers who invested heavily in China’s wine boom are now facing an uncertain future.

The value of exports of wine to China dropped to almost zero in December, according to statistics from industry group Wine Australia. The total value of wine exported to China for all of 2020 dropped by 14% to about 1 billion Australian dollars ($790 million).

China maintains the measures are needed to stop cheap wine imports from depressing the local market. But the Australian wine industry believes it has more to do with worsening tensions between the two countries.

It isn’t just wine. As relations between Canberra and Beijing spiral, many Australian exports, including beef and timber, started encountering obstacles entering the China market, and there’s little optimism things will improve any time soon.

A customer looks at a bottle of wine imported from Australia at a supermarket on November 27 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province of China.

The wine boom

Australia is the world’s fifth-largest wine exporter and home to some of the world’s most-famous wine regions, such as the Barossa Valley in South Australia and the Hunter Valley in New South Wales.

According to Wine Australia, the wine industry contributes up to $35 billion (45 billion Australian dollars) to the country’s economy annually.

Before November, China was Australia’s biggest wine market by far. In 2019, more than a third of the wine that Australia exported went to China. The country bought $840 million (1.1 billion Australian dollars) from Australian vineyards, according to Wine Australia. That year, Australia sold more wine by value to China than to the United States, United Kingdom and Canada combined.
Alister Purbrick, a fourth-generation Victorian wine maker and chief executive of the Tahbilk Group, said that Australia had been building its wine business in China for years, but it had only really taken off after the two countries signed a free trade agreement in 2015, which removed 14% tariffs on Australian wine.
The removal of tariffs supercharged a growing industry. Between 2008 and 2018, Australia’s wine exports to China jumped from $73 million to over $1 billion.
China’s demand for wine isn’t limited to Australia. France is the still leading exporter of wine to China. Australia comes in second, and there is also strong demand for Chilean labels.

Of Australian wine, red varieties are the most popular in China, Purbrick said, although recently consumers had begun to branch out into sparkling and white wines.

Zheng Li, who owns a wine business in Hangzhou, said he thinks Australian wine has found success in China because it is, in his opinion, better than the wines produced elsewhere — and it’s also cheaper, mostly thanks to the free trade agreement between the two countries.

He added that the higher alcohol content is also appealing to Chinese drinkers who are used to baijiu, a popular, strong liquor made from rice.

Another perk: Chinese consumers find the labeling system Australian winemakers use easier to understand than the regional labeling used by European companies, Zheng said. For example, Treasury Wines’ popular Penfolds brand labels its wine by Bins — as in Bin 8, Bin 28, Bin 389 — which refer to where the wine is stored before being sold.

Some Australian winemakers also attribute the popularity of Australian wines to what they describe as the country’s clean environment and appealing climate.

“There’s no denying the quality of the Australian wine and the purity of the country, the climate, the product, it’s clean, it’s pure and a very good quality wine, very palatable,” said White from Jarressa Estate.

But the wine boom was also the product of years of work by Australia, which targeted the growing Chinese middle class with advertising and education campaigns, according to Lee McLean, Wine Australia’s general manager of government relations and external affairs.

Chinese sommeliers and winemakers were brought to Australia, McLean said, along with tour groups who would visit vineyards to sample the produce. Purdick, from the Tahbilk Group, said that some Melbourne vineyards employed Mandarin translators for the Chinese tour groups.

Alister Purbrick, chief executive of the Tahbilk Group, walks through his vineyard in central Victoria in February 2020.

‘Effectively zero’

Even before the tariffs, Australia’s wine industry was having a difficult year.

A series of terrible weather events hurt yields by as much as 40% in the first half of 2020, Purdick said, including hail storms, drought and the catastrophic summer bushfires which caused “smoke taint” in some vineyards’ harvests.

The coronavirus pandemic, meanwhile, led to reduced orders from China and elsewhere as economic growth slowed around the world.

“[But] those two effects have been a walk in the park compared to the China effect,” said Purdick.

Political relations between Australia and China began to rapidly deteriorate in April after Prime Minister Scott Morrison called for an international investigation into the origins of Covid-19.

China still needs Australia to power its economic recovery
Beijing was furious. China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang called Morrison’s comments “highly irresponsible,” and Chinese Ambassador to Australia Chen Jingye openly mused about the possibility of economic fallout.

“Maybe the ordinary [Chinese] people will say ‘Why should we drink Australian wine? Eat Australian beef?'” he told the Australian Financial Review at the time.

Shortly afterward, a number of Australian exports — including timber, beef, some types of coal and eventually, wine — began to encounter difficulties entering the China market.

In August, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced an “anti-dumping investigation” into Australian wine, which led the ministry in November to impose temporary tariffs of up to 212%. It isn’t clear at this stage when the tariffs will expire or be made permanent.

Purbrick said that a quarter of the exports from his family’s Tahbilk Winery, which has operated for more than a century, had been to China. Now that business is gone.

“Now it is effectively zero sales, or very small sales, into China,” he said.

Wine barrels and pallets of bottles are stacked at a winery in the Yarra Valley, Victoria, Australia, on December 7.

The blame game

Many winemakers in Australia are convinced that the tariffs are political retaliation by China in response to Australia’s calls for an investigation into the Covid-19 pandemic.

Beijing hasn’t shied away from connecting the trade tensions to political disputes between the two countries, either. Asked about the trade tensions in November, China’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying attributed the “root cause” of the problems to Australia, saying that the country had “violated the basic norms governing international relations.”

“[They] said and did the wrong things on issues related to Hong Kong and Xinjiang concerning China’s core interests. China has made clear our position on multiple occasions,” she said, referring to the Australian government’s rebuke of China over alleged human rights abuses.

Politicians urge people to buy Australian wine in defiance of China

Vintners who spoke to CNN Business mostly said that they didn’t blame the Australian government for the predicament. They said they believed that Canberra had done its best to negotiate with China — though Tahbilk Group’s Purbrick said Canberra could perhaps have handled its calls for a Covid-19 investigation a bit more diplomatically.

“Australia’s only a little nation. We should have absolutely supported it, but we didn’t need to lead the charge,” Purdick said.

Others in Australia lay some blame at the door of the Chinese wine industry, which they claim pushed for action due to concerns over the growing popularity of Australian wine.

In its application to the Ministry of Commerce to take action, the China Alcoholic Drinks Association said domestic wine production shrank 61% between 2015 and 2019. It firmly pointed the finger at Australia, whose wine exports to China more than doubled over the same period.

The domestic industry is “deteriorating rapidly,” the application said, adding that low-price Australian wine is “damaging the domestic industry” in China.

In its response, Australian Grape and Wine, Australia’s national association of winegrape and wine producers, said Australian imports were not to blame for the downturn in China’s domestic wine industry.

Quoting analysis by drinks market research firm International Wine and Spirits Research, it said local Chinese wines were “beset by structural problems arising from the rush to increase production during the 1990s and 2000s. These include high costs, unsuitable soils and climates, excessive yields, poor quality and image.”

China’s local wine industry doesn’t have the capacity to meet the growing demand for “high quality wines,” it said, adding that other countries were exporting wine to China in higher volumes and at lower prices than Australia.

Bruce Tyrrell, managing director of Tyrrell’s Wines in New South Wales, put it this way: “The sales of domestic Chinese wine started to decline and the Chinese wine markers started to say, ‘Get these bloody Australian winemakers out of our market.'”

He added: “I’m sure my answer was, ‘Make better wine.'”

Tyrrell said that while China had made up as much as 25% of his business, his winery was now treating it as a non-market. He added: “Somebody said to me, ‘Who are going to be the biggest losers out of this?’ and I said, ‘The Chinese consumers.'”

Multiple Chinese vineyard owners turned down requests for comment from CNN Business, saying the situation was “too sensitive.”

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said in November, after the tariffs were announced, that the Chinese government believed a sound and stable relationship with Australia was “in the interests of both countries.”

“It is hoped that the Australian side will do more things conducive to mutual trust and cooperation as is in line with the two sides’ comprehensive strategic partnership,” he said.

Ultimately, it will be up to the World Trade Organization to decide how valid the anti-dumping claims are, according to Sean Langcake, principal economist at BIS Oxford Economics in Sydney.

Whoever is to blame, Australian vineyards are suffering. Even winemakers with no footprint in the China market are now facing a likely drop in domestic wine prices, as vintners flood the Australian market with product they can’t sell overseas.

At the same time, after a difficult 2020 wine harvest, Purbrick said that 2021 was shaping up to be a better harvest than usual, exacerbating problems with a glut of wine which Australian producers can’t export.

“I’m concerned across the whole industry … There’s no winners in a situation like that,” he said.

New markets

As some Australian winemakers look overseas for new markets, there are quiet concerns that if the China market goes for good, there simply isn’t anything that can replace it in terms of buying power.

Some vintners told CNN Business that they are hopeful that India, with its rapidly growing economy and middle class, might be an option, while others said they are looking to develop more obscure markets like Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

A new free trade deal with the United Kingdom in the wake of Brexit might also open up opportunities, if it leads to tariffs being reduced on Australian wines coming into Britain.

Australia is out of recession. Now it needs to avoid a trade war with China

White, from Jarressa Estates, said that the coronavirus is making traveling overseas to look for new buyers incredibly hard.

“These things take the ability to do international travel and time and money,” he said. “It isn’t just a matter of, ‘Oh, we have all this stock, let’s ship it to America or Europe.'”

White said that he hoped that the dispute would be resolved within a year, but other vintners aren’t expecting a break anytime soon.

“I think the reality is that we are probably facing a situation which is likely to be with us for years rather than months,” said Wine Australia’s Lee McLean.

Two wine importers in China who spoke to CNN Business anonymously, to protect their domestic business, said that the ban wouldn’t affect much of their business as Australian wine could be easily replaced by Chilean wine, which is also produced in the southern hemisphere.

Some winemakers in Australia were doubtful though, saying that while some varieties of Chilean wine may have a similar taste and price, those winemakers couldn’t replace the more high-end Australian labels, such as Penfolds.

Even if the tariffs are eased relatively quickly, the episode is likely to reshape Australia’s wine industry.

Purbrick, of the Tahbilk Group, said that in future it was unlikely Australian winemakers would allow themselves to become so heavily reliant on China or any single market.

“There’s a few very good lessons to be learned out of this current scenario,” he said. “How far can we go with a customer or a market where if it falls over tomorrow, it’s not going to kill us?”

CNN’s Beijing Bureau contributed to this article.

Emma is not only a talented cake artist but she also is teaching other people how to make unique and artistic cakes, given that asked her what she liked the most when it came to teaching and passing on her skills to others.

“Teaching is my passion. I have been fortunate to travel the world meeting so many wonderful people and pass on the skills I know. I believe in teaching with praise and encouragement, although steering in the right direction if things don’t look right. Laughing and learning together is always the best way to get amazing results and happy students plus it’s so rewarding for me to see people learn new techniques and what they achieve from them.”

The creative process is a whole long journey when it comes to making art, and we found that Jayne agrees with this statement as well.

“I enjoy seeing my subject come to life when working on it. The best part is the sculpting and finishing touches. I often get lost in my large projects for show features as it’s too exciting to stop.”

Making cakes such as Emma’s seems like a lot of hard work already, but she also makes commissioned work too. Given, that the cake artist deals with some clients as well, we were curious to ask if there were any stories where she had people commission something unusual.

“The most unusual design made for a client was the trapeze artist I made for Cake Masters Magazine. This was suspended and life-size which came with many trials and tribulations to achieve the final result.“

Chinese fighters buzz Taiwan’s air defense zone as it appoints new defense minister

Chinese fighters buzz Taiwan’s air defense zone as it appoints new defense minister

Beijing, which claims Taiwan as Chinese territory, says it is responding to what it calls “collusion” between Taipei and Washington, Taiwan’s main international backer and weapons supplier.

The Taiwanese Defense Ministry said four Chinese J-16s and four JH-7s as well as an electronic warfare aircraft flew near the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands in the top part of the South China Sea.

The air force scrambled, with “radio warnings issued and air defense missile systems deployed to monitor the activity,” the ministry said.

There was no immediate comment from China.

Shortly before the ministry’s statement, Taiwan announced a reshuffle of senior security officials including a new, US-trained defense minister, to help bolster military modernization and intelligence efforts.

President Tsai Ing-wen has pledged to defend the island and has made modernizing its armed forces a priority, including developing a fleet of new submarines, buying new F-16 fighters from the United States and upgrading its warships.

National Security Bureau Director-General Chiu Kuo-cheng, who graduated from the US Army War College in 1999, would replace Yen De-fa as defense minister, Presidential Office spokesman Xavier Chang told reporters.

Taiwan's planned submarine fleet could forestall a potential Chinese invasion for decades

The president expected Chiu to complete the next stage of military reforms, including planning for “asymmetric warfare,” focusing on high-tech, mobile weapons designed to make any Chinese attack as difficult as possible, Chang said.

Chiu’s old job as intelligence chief will be taken by Taiwan’s top China policy-maker, Chen Ming-tong, now head of the Mainland Affairs Council.

“The most important task of the National Security Bureau is to understand and have a grasp on China,” Chang said.

They will take up their posts next week.

China announces its 2021 military budget next month at the annual meeting of parliament, a figure closely watched as an indication of its strategic intentions. Last year it set a rate of increase at a three-decade low as the economy wilted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chinese military expert Ni Lexiong, a retired professor at the Shanghai University of Political Science and Law, said this year it would likely get a big boost, partly due to the increased tensions over Taiwan.

“If the mainland wants to liberate Taiwan it needs to make preparations for war, so we need to pump up our equipment,” he said.

If Famous Monuments In Paris Were Turned Into Pop Culture Characters By Benoit Lapray (13 Pics)

The artist told us about the team behind this project and the process it took to create it: “I am used to working alone on my projects, but for this one I could not, with my skills, succeed in carrying it out. So I had to find collaborators to help me, especially on the CGI part of the project, which is a very long process. The process of this work is very long. There is already the whole part of location scouting and selection of the sets. Then come the choice and the purchase of the figurines. You have to find the characters that best fit with this or that scenery. It’s a very long part and not very fun, but essential for the rest. After that, there is the shooting part which is the most fun part, although not obvious when you have to photograph a city like Paris where everything is constantly moving. You have to manage to come on the right day when the light is good and there are no disturbing elements in the shooting field (like works, or badly parked vehicles.)”

“Once the set images are made, the work is still far from being finished because I had to ‘scan’ each of the figurines (in my studio) with the photogrammetry process. Then I gave these images to my CGI collaborators on this project (who are the studio 95 Magenta and the CGI graphic designer Emmanuelle Vonck) who took care of modeling each character to then modify their texture and transform them into statues. The process took 2 years to obtain 13 visuals, it’s long but there is an explanation for that. Indeed each one of us works for clients, for commissioned work, every day, and we have to find the time, aside, to work on this kind of project. But it was worth it. I’m quite happy with the final result, at least it’s very close to what I had in mind. Thanks to my 2 collaborators for their work and their trust in this project.”

Alexey Navalny will remain in jail after Russian court shortens sentence

Alexey Navalny will remain in jail after Russian court shortens sentence

The court did shorten the activist’s sentence by a month and a half, after taking into account time he spent under house arrest from December 2014 to February 2015.

Navalny appealed the sentence at Moscow City Court on Saturday.

At the start of proceedings the anti-corruption activist asked the judge to allow video recording of the hearing.

The judge decided not to allow journalists to film the proceedings but said there would be “a recording of the verdict.”

Navalny’s lawyer Olga Mikhailova then petitioned the court to release her client immediately, as demanded by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

Kremlin critic Alexey Navalny handed jail term, prompting protests across Russia

Mikhailova argued that Navalny’s life and health were in danger while in detention.

The court handed down the original sentence on February 2, after ruling that while Navalny was in Germany, he violated probation terms from a 2014 case in which he had received a suspended sentence of three and a half years.

The suspended sentence was then replaced with a prison term.

Navalny was initially detained by the Russian state in January following his arrival from Germany, where he spent five months recovering from Novichok poisoning he blamed on the Russian government. The Kremlin has repeatedly denied any involvement.

Navalny’s defamation case over comments regarding a World War II veteran will be heard later Saturday.

30 Unnecessarily Ableist Things Students Saw Teachers Do, As Shared By Twitter

Humanity has progressed quite a lot when it comes to human rights, respect, tolerance, and the like, but there is still a ways to go as inequality and discrimination is still a thing—quite a big one, actually. And the internet has become a bit of a platform for people to share such experiences.

Shira (@shirainspired) recently went to Twitter to ask people what was the most unnecessarily ableist thing a teacher ever did to them. For those unaware, ableism means discrimination and social prejudice against a person with a disability. This is usually based on the belief that typical abilities are superior.

How Montana and the Dakotas Recovered From a Covid Surge

How Montana and the Dakotas Recovered From a Covid Surge

Not three months ago, the coronavirus had so ravaged South Dakota that its packed hospitals were flying patients to other states for treatment. An analysis of data collected by Johns Hopkins University had shown that the mortality rates from Covid-19 in North and South Dakota were the world’s highest. In one Montana county, the rate of hospitalization for the virus was 20 times the national average.

As in some earlier hot spots like Arizona and Florida, the surge mushroomed as most leaders and residents in these states resisted lockdowns and mask mandates for months. In South Dakota, no statewide mask mandate was ever issued.

The spike in these states was as brief as it was powerful. Today, their rates of new cases are back roughly to where they were last summer or early fall. In North Dakota, which mandated masks at the height of its surge in mid-November, the turnaround has been especially dramatic: the daily average deaths per person is now the country’s second lowest, according to a New York Times database.

By some measures, the three-state hot spot’s trajectory has mirrored the nation’s. After the daily U.S. average for new cases peaked on Jan. 9, it took 37 days — until last Monday — for the rate to drop by two-thirds. It took South Dakota and Montana 35 days to reach the same mark after cases peaked in those two states in November. (North Dakota did it in 24.)

Deaths remain high nationally, because it can take weeks for Covid-19 patients to die. The country continues to average more than 2,000 deaths each day and is on pace to reach 500,000 deaths in the next week.

Experts say the spikes in the Northern Great Plains ebbed largely for the same reason that the U.S. caseload has been falling: People finally took steps to save themselves in the face of an out-of-control deadly disease.

“As things get worse and friends and family members are in the hospital or dying, people start to adjust their behavior and cases go down,” said Meghan O’Connell, an epidemiologist in South Dakota and an adviser on health issues to the Great Plains Tribal Leaders Health Board, which represents Native American populations in the area. Native Americans, who represent about 5 percent to almost 10 percent of the population all three states, have been infected by the virus at far higher rates than the general population.

During the outbreak’s worst weeks, from early November to late December, mask use rose 10 to 20 percentage points in South Dakota and 20 to 30 percentage points in North Dakota, according to survey data from the University of Maryland.

Since then, the U.S. vaccination drive has been gathering speed. North Dakota ranks fifth among states for giving its residents at least one shot; South Dakota is seventh and Montana is 11th.

Some experts see the coronavirus’s race through these states as a rough test of the widely rejected idea that the pandemic should be allowed to run its course until the population gains herd immunity.

While the region did not reach herd immunity, it may have come closer than anywhere else in the United States.

The outbreak in November vaulted North and South Dakota to the top of the list in cases per person, where they remain, according to a New York Times database, with 13 and 12.5 percent of their residents known to have been infected. Montana, at about 9.2 percent, is close to the middle of the national pack.

Just over 8 percent of Americans — about 27.9 million — are known to have had the coronavirus, but for many reasons, including that asymptomatic infections can go undetected, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that the real rate is 4.6 times that.

By those measures, as least six in 10 Dakotans — and most likely more — could have gained some immunity to the virus by the end of 2020, according to Jeffrey Shaman, a Columbia University professor of environmental health sciences who is modeling the future spread of the virus. And in some places, he noted, the share could be even higher.

30 Of The Most Infamous ‘Plot Holes’ That The Movies Actually Explained, But The Audience Didn’t Notice

30 Of The Most Infamous ‘Plot Holes’ That The Movies Actually Explained, But The Audience Didn’t Notice

Ah, plot holes—they’re gaping maws where the lack of logic meets bad writing to capsize a movie and make it sink just like Jack from ‘Titanic’ (sorry, was that too soon to make a joke about it? Rose might not like it!).

But… here’s the problem. Some major movie plot holes aren’t even plot holes! In fact, the films themselves explain everything away, whether openly or more subtly. To the perceptive viewer, everything makes sense because they see the producers gracefully covering their tracks through visual and verbal storytelling.

To the internet, however, these supposed ‘plot holes’ are a stain on the movies’ reputations. We’ve collected some of the best non-plot hole ‘plot holes’ for you to enjoy from the fun and enlightening thread by redditor Animeking1108 (you can tell that they’re a visual media fan already). Don’t forget to upvote the responses that made the most sense to you as you continue scrolling. Onward to cinematic glory!

How Could Monica Afford A 2 Bedroom Apartment In NYC??? In Friends. It’s So Unrealistic! She specifically says, on the first episode, that the apartment is rent controlled, and if anyone asks, she’s an 80 year old lady.

Why Didn't They Just Fly The Eagles To Mordor In The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy?Well, maybe that tower with the giant demonic eye could see them coming miles away and order an army of Orcs to shoot them down, just off the top of my head.

Animeking1108 Report

Animeking1108 asked their fellow redditors to share the infamous ‘plot holes’ that are basically misunderstandings caused by an impatient audience that doesn’t want to think for “more than ten seconds.”

Most of us are probably aware of quite a few of these. They’re so infamous, they’ve passed on into popular culture and have become enrooted like sleeping Ents and we no longer question them because we take the plot holes for granted.

If Cinderella’s Glass Slipper Fit Her Foot Perfectly, Then Why Did It Fall Off In The First Place In Cinderella (1950)?Glass!!! Is not!!! Very malleable!!! It’s not a very flexible material so if course it can be expected to fall off!! This also applies to the original story, where iirc the slipper is made of gold.

Why Didn't They Use The Time Turner In Harry Potter To Just Kill Young Voldemort? In Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban, everyone loves to point out that if you can time travel, you can just go back to the past and fix every problem, like by killing voldemort when he was a baby for example.

If you’d just pay attention, you’d see that you can’t actually change the past, you travel to the past and effectively live the same exact situation from another perspective. Future Harry saved past Harry, and future Harry was always there to save past Harry, nothing was changed by going back in time.

There will always be paradoxes when time travel is involved, but the remark of ‘fixing’ the past is just not valid. However, I do have to admit, when they created ‘the cursed child’ it all went to shit. That play makes no sense whatsoever and I therefore wish to not count that in as canon

The major one is from 1997’s ‘Titanic’ where Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack drowns at the end of the movie (can’t spoil a movie over a couple of decades old), even though there’s enough space on the door for him and Rose, portrayed by Kate Winslet. But do you remember that scene? The movie shows that the door couldn’t handle both of them. The Mythbusters found a way where they could both technically survive, but it seemed overly complex and impractical.

Why Did Nasa Train Oil Drillers How To Be Astronauts When They Could've Just Trained Astronauts To Drill Oil In Armageddon (1998)?Except that NASA and other space agencies do this all the time; they’re called mission specialists and they have specialized training in some field the flight crew doesn’t. They don’t get taught how to fly the ship, just how not to die in space.

Also, for the record, drilling for oil — or any kind of deep core geological work — is extremely specialized, and most of the people in the positions the team of drillers in Armageddon were in have a lot of letters behind their names.

Why Would Ariel Throw Her Whole Life Away For A Man She Just Met In The Little Mermaid (1989)?Ariel had an entire song about how much she wanted to explore the human world long before she ever laid eyes on Eric. Even after seeing him for the first time and fawning all over him, she never thought about going to see Ursula to get some legs.

The reason she “threw her life away” was because she just watched as her father go into a rage and violently destroy her Human Trinkets collection, something that brought her more joy than anything else. She invested SO MUCH TIME and risked her life to get those things. All that time and effort was destroyed and invalidated by her father in less than a minute.

Sure, Ursula may have framed her whole pitch to Ariel around “you’ll get your human man,” but Ariel didn’t even consider Ursula an option until Triton destroyed her life’s work. She no longer felt she could be happy or safe in her father’s ocean, so she might as well try to find a life where he can’t reach her. Getting a chance to be with Eric was just a nice bonus.

Insider points out that the odds of Jack surviving on the floating door were close to zero… unless the door was made out of pine. (Plus, in the script, it’s referred to as wooden debris and it’s technically the top of a door frame, but that’s being overly technical.)

Why Didn't Jack And Rose Just Share The Big Door In Titanic (1997) When They Could've Both Fit?Jack and Rose could not have both gotten onto the door. They even showed Jack trying to climb up and the whole thing capsizing.

If Buzz Lightyear Doesn't Think He's A Toy, Why Does He Freeze Up When Humans Are Around In Toy Story (1995)?Because he’s on an alien planet and that’s what everyone else does when these giants walk into the room. He needs to blend in.

It also might just be an instinct all toys have. You can’t exactly have toys not holding still just because they don’t consciously know any better.

Crocoshark Report

“Pine might have allowed the two to both survive long enough for rescue. However, due to the way the panel flipped when Jack tried to grab it after Rose was clinging on, the wood was most likely oak,” writes Insider. “Unfortunately, the size of the oak debris coupled with the weight of a sodden and hypothermic Rose on top could work, but not if you added Jack’s additional weight to it.”

How Was Kylo Ren (Who Had Trained For Years With A Lightsaber) So Easily Defeated By Rey (Who Only Held A Lightsaber For A Few Minutes) In Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)?Kylo had, in the past 10 minutes, killed his father, been shot in the leg by a weapon that being shot by a normal person had previously been demonstrated to be the equivalent to being hit by a car, and had taken a lightsaber hit from Finn (who he had been merely toying with and ended the fight as soon as he took a hit). On top of all of this, he wasn’t even trying to kill Rey and was trying to recruit her. Yet even after all of those things being clearly demonstrated just moments before, fans still insist that either he’s weak or that Rey is overpowered for beating him.

If Harry Potter Was A Horcrux The Entire Time And Basilisk Venom Is Enough To Destroy A Horcrux, Why Wasn't The Horcrux Inside Of Harry Destroyed When The Basilisk Bit Him In Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets (2002)?It would have been enough to kill him/destroy the horcrux if Fawkes hadn’t been there. A horcrux has to be damaged beyond hope of magical repair. That means death if it’s a living thing, or some powerful magical damage for nonliving objects. It’s not like basilisk venom has any special ‘anti-horcrux’ properties. It’s just a substance that can damage most objects behind the point of magical repair, and Fawkes cured Harry before it could kill him.

Why Didn't Thanos Just Create More Resources Instead Of Killing Half Of Life On Every Planet In Avengers: Infinity War (2018)?Is there not a scene explaining that he’d had the genocide idea for a long time, but was rejected and considered crazy by his people? I think the implication is that, deep down, Thanos wanted to kill half of all life so he could say “I told you so.”

Another major ‘plot hole’ (that is anything but) comes in the form of my favorite movie series of all time, ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy. The keyword here is eagles. Eagles? Great Eagles! The alleged ‘slip’ in storytelling goes something like this: the Fellowship of the Ring could have asked the eagles for help and plopped the One Ring right into the fiery chasm of Mount Doom, defeating Sauron and saving Middle Earth. Hooray! Right..? Not so fast there, young hobbits.

Why Did The Couple In A Quiet Place (2018) Selfishly Decide To Have Another Baby In The Middle Of What Is Essentially An Apocalypse? The couple likely got pregnant regardless of their own wishes. There’s basically zero infrastructure left and they’ve been reduced to raiding an abandoned pharmacy for whatever random medicine might be left. Sure, they could probably find a few packs of pills and condoms, but after that, what exactly are your birth control options? Give yourself a birth control implant? Perform your own vasectomy? Pull out and hope for the best?

Sure, they probably could have been more careful, but the number of people I saw criticizing this as if it’s impossible to get pregnant without consciously choosing to do so was hilarious.

How Did Batman Get Back Into Gotham In The Dark Knight Rises (2008) When It Was Under Bane's Control?Obviously, Bruce is a man of stealth who knows every way into, out of, and through Gotham; not just the roads that were seized by Bane. The real question is how he recovered from that spinal break and hokey prison surgery enough to make the trek and fight at all.

yeyjordan Report

Here’s the problem. That would never have worked. And there’s a host of reasons for it! Starting with the fundamentally practical (tons of orcish archers in Mordor, Sauron’s Eye always on the lookout, the Nazgul and their winged beasts ready for action) to the meta (the Ring might have enticed the eagles with its insidious promises of power, and let’s not forget that the eagles themselves are meant to “bear tidings not burdens”).

Why Didn't Vader Sense That Leia Was His Daughter In Star Wars: A New Hope (Episode Iv) 1977?Vader didn’t sense that Luke was his son either. He thought Padme had a miscarriage. He only knows Luke is his son when Palpatine flat out tells him.

YodasChick-O-Stick Report

What’s more, the Fellowship’s quest was a secret. Relying on the eagles without a distraction like Aragorn’s attack would have proven to be the downfall of Middle Earth as we know it. Besides, there are spies everywhere and the eagles would have been spotted at some point. Sauron would know in advance what to expect and, let’s not forget, that you can’t drop the Ring directly into Mount Doom from the air.

Why Was Daniel Allowed To Do The Crane Kick In The Karate Kid (1984) When It's Clearly Illegal? Many traditional martial arts competitions ban punches to the head, but are perfectly okay with kicks to the head. Why that rule exists varies depending on who you ask, but kicks to the head are usually perfectly legal.

Yes, I know that the Cobra Kai youtube series jumped on the bandwagon with this one, but I still say it’s bulls**t.

Why Did Voldemort Not Just Shoot Harry In Harry Potter? He shoots zero people throughout the entire story. I doubt that he even knows what a gun is.

bunakherif Report

The eagles themselves aren’t under Gandalf’s control, least of all anyone else’s: they are proud creatures who aren’t anyone’s aerial taxi service. When the eagles decide to help is entirely up to them. They directly serve the Valar and they have their own reasons for doing (or not doing) things. If this were Dungeons and Dragons, you could argue that they’re True Neutral or Lawful Neutral or that their understanding of what’s good is beyond the understanding of mortals or even wizards.

Why Does The Death Star Have Such A Stupid Weakness Of An Exhaust Port?Cooling things in space is difficult as heat needs somewhere to go. An exhaust vent is a perfectly reasonable thing to have station is the size of a small moon that’s obviously going to generate a lot of heat and other such things that needs to be vented. The movie also outright tells us that this is not the only exhaust vent the station has. In the briefing scene it mentions there are multiple exhaust vents, it wasn’t a single vent.

The Rebel pilot also complain about the 2m wide port being too small to hit. Their first torpedoes are unsuccessful even with the targetting computers, it’s only Luke using the force to time when to fire that works, so it is not some huge glaring uneccesary weakness. It’s an integral part of a giant space station that even skilled pilots with computer-targeting couldn’t hit, it wasn’t some significant weakness in the first place.

As part of that, there’s the “Rogue One explains the weakness!” thing. No, it doesn’t explain the exhaust port – the weakness added by Galen Erso is that the reactor when hit will cause a chain reaction. That specific exhaust port is just identified as the most appropriate one to use.

Thinking That Dumbledore's A Bastard For Knowingly Leaving Harry To Live With The DursleysDumbledore did everything he could short of barging into the Dursley’s house and cursing them to hell and high water because, with the blood ward Lily created and the massive chaos of Voldemort’s first defeat, it was the safest option. Remember, shortly after Voldemort’s defeat, a group of his supporters forced their way into the Longbottoms’ house and drove them mad with torture. Harry had these maniacs gunning for him as well, and he was a baby!

What other ‘plot holes’ that aren’t really plot holes at all do you know about, dear Pandas, whether in movies or any other medium? How Does A Human-Made Virus Work On Alien-Made Technology In Independence Day (1996)?Everyone jokes about the alien mothership not having anti-virus, but why would they? They’re a hivemind species that communicates telepathically, and they seem to have an extremely high level of social cohesion. Computer viruses aren’t like actual viruses. They’re not naturally occurring; humans created them because humans are malicious towards each other. It’s entirely possible an alien species that uses telepathy to communicate wouldn’t even concieve of such a thing, and it doesn’t seem likely that any of the species they’ve faced thus far have given them reason to consider it. Plus, even if they did have such defenses, at that point Jeff Goldblum has a direct hardline connection anyway.

(And yeah, if you’ve read the books, you know the eagles are sentient and probably would have refused. But I also get that’s not obvious in the movies. So I try to confine myself to the films when talking with someone who’s only seen the films.)

Gendry Calls Himself “Gendry Rivers” When Talking To Arya. People Think Since He Is Robert Baratheon’s Bastard And Was Born In King’s Landing, He Should Be Called “Gendry Waters”. Game Of ThronesThe problem is that only acknowledged highborn bastards have geographically- based surnames like “Snow”, “Sand” or “Waters”. Gendry didn’t even know who his father is until the very end, so he in fact never uses a surname. He might have know that he is a bastard but he didn’t know he is highborn. Small folks, bastards or not, don’t use surnames. This is evident since many black brothers who are lowborn don’t have surnames. Gendry lived his whole life calling himself simply “Gendry”, so he made a mistake when he wanted to emphasize that he is no longer a bastard, on the same day that he found out he was a bastard of Robert’s. Also it was established that Gendry is illiterate…

Boris Johnson’s government is ‘gaslighting’ Britain about the realities of Brexit, critics say

In that time, British exporters have struggled with new trade barriers. In some cases, orders have been slowed down by paperwork; in others, fresh produce has failed to reach its destination in time, forcing it to be destroyed. All of this is a direct result of the UK’s policy decision to leave the EU’s single market and customs union.

Under these circumstances, you’d expect a government to be doing everything in its power to help struggling businesses. However, critics fear that the Johnson administration has buried its head in the sand: The Prime Minister has called the difficulties no more than “teething problems.”

“Only some of the issues we are seeing at present could be legitimately described as ‘teething problems,'” says Adam Marshall, director of the British Chambers of Commerce. “Yes, some firms are facing adjustment … But others are seeing their entire business model up-ended, and their ability to trade successfully undermined.”

Rotting fish, lost business and piles of red tape. The reality of Brexit hits Britain

Last weekend, Britain’s foreign secretary, Dominic Raab, said that he understood some companies were struggling as a result of the sudden change, but that “if you take a 10-year view … the growth opportunities in the future are going to come from emerging and developing economies around the world.”

Which isn’t much comfort for businesses that export fresh produce, such as Scotland’s fishing industry. “For many businesses, trading with the EU now feels like a high-risk, long-odds gamble,” says James Withers, chief executive of Scotland Food and Drink, a lobby group. “The trading system is more costly, complex, slower and unreliable. For our European customers who need guarantees of products like salmon arriving at a certain time, reliability is everything.”

Far from being teething problems, the slower, less reliable trading systems Withers describes are the consequence of new paperwork on things like customs, proof of a product’s origin, and sanitary standards. In the case of companies that import parts from Europe before exporting a finished product, the correct paperwork is needed at every stage of the supply chain, leaving British exporters at the mercy of European firms which are also getting their heads around the complex new processes.

Members of the seafood industry have protested against the post-Brexit requirements that they say have caused a sharp drop in exports to the European Union.

“Even though impact of FTAs is usually analyzed over a period of time, for a government minister to say we should look at the impact of this deal in 10 years when people are losing jobs and money is a bit tone deaf, especially when you consider that it was down to the government to provide guidance to allow businesses to prepare,” says Anna Jerzewska, founder of Trade and Borders, a consultancy which assists exporters and importers across Europe.

If the current situation sounds dire, some believe it will get worse. Withers points out that controls on EU food imports are due to start in April and that stockpiles are being depleted. And when Europe’s hospitality businesses emerge from lockdown, demand for food and drink will pick up. “If we can’t supply them, our competitors will.”

Unfortunately for exporters, neither the UK government nor the EU seem in the mood to reopen the deal, after years of painful Brexit negotiations. “Politically, the government made a decision to prioritize regulatory autonomy over economic integration with the EU and the trade deal reflects that — it does little to facilitate trade,” says Sam Lowe, a senior research fellow at the Centre for European Reform.

For the time being, these changes have mostly affected those looking to export goods. However, there is also major concern at the long-term impact that Johnson’s hard Brexit will have on the UK’s services industry.

“When we emerge from lockdown and British actors, musicians and people providing professional services start looking at taking jobs in Europe, they will be introduced to a world of visas, work permits and European embassies that they never had to worry about before,” says Lowe.

One of the biggest fears of a hard Brexit was the impact it would have on the city of London, the world-class financial hub that has been the envy of Europe for decades. While London has not seen the flight of jobs many predicted, billions of euros in share trades have switched to Amsterdam from London since January 1. This doesn’t have much of an immediate impact as the work can still be done by staff in London, but if this trend continues, it could undermine Britain’s status as the financial capital of Europe and impact future inward investment.

It had been known for a long time that financial services were not going to be covered in the trade deal. In some respects, that made life easier for financial firms. “Because it’s such a heavily regulated sector, there hasn’t been too much disruption or job losses,” says Lowe. However, he believes that the impact could come later down the line. “If you’re looking to easily sell new financial services across Europe in the future, where do you headquarter yourself: Amsterdam or London? The answer isn’t as clear cut as it once was.”

2020 stretched the social fabric of the United Kingdom. 2021 could rip it to pieces

Many analysts thought that the initial trade deal would smooth the path to some kind of future pact on financial services, but with the UK government being bullish about the merits of its agreement and Brussels making noises about taking London’s business, things don’t look promising.

“There might be closer cooperation, but I doubt it at the moment. What’s more concerning is the government’s gaslighting. They don’t admit that there’s a problem; they play it down; they say to wait 10 years. Which one is it? Is it all fine or do we need to wait 10 years? And what are the people currently suffering supposed to do in that time?” says Anand Menon, professor of European politics at King’s College London.

Liz Truss, the international trade secretary, has refused to answer questions from lawmakers on their concerns about the deal, while the government says it has no plans to publish an impact assessment.

Others are pessimistic about the long term, and unsure if the government is unaware or in denial about how bad things could get. “It’s entirely possible that 10 years from now, the UK will have pivoted to exporting beyond Europe,” says Simon Usherwood, professor of politics at the University of Surrey. “My concern is that it will be as part of an overall reduction in trade, meaning a smaller economy and, ultimately, job losses.”

Alastair Campbell, who was former Prime Minister Tony Blair’s director of communication, is less charitable. “It makes my blood boil. I think they are in denial because they cannot handle the consequences of their policies. They are battering some of our greatest industries and trying to distract everyone by picking fake fights and starting culture wars.”

Boris Johnson's visit to a fish processing plant in the English county of Suffolk was a key event in his campaign for Brexit.

This is all going to get very uncomfortable. Multiple lawmakers, including those from Johnson’s own party, told CNN that they are still receiving many emails from constituents who are facing troubles. However, where initially they sought advice, many are now just expressing their frustrations.

“They know we can’t do anything in a lot of instances. The government’s websites are not very helpful and they simply are not getting the help they need,” says one lawmaker on the government payroll. “It’s difficult. They are angry that people are canceling orders and that I personally cannot get a French visa for them,” they add.

A government spokesperson told CNN that it was “committed to ensuring that businesses get the support they need to trade effectively with Europe and seize new opportunities as we strike trade deals with the world’s fastest growing markets.”

Authorities were operating export helplines, running webinars and offering support from advisers, the spokesperson said, adding that a £20 million ($28m) fund to help small businesses adjust had also been established.

But back in Cornwall, Andy Trust doesn’t see much hope for the future. “The British public will never eat enough fish to make up for lost European business. For every man at sea, another 20 jobs rely on them on shore. Boris Johnson spouts on about investing millions in fishing over the next five years. In five years, he might have destroyed the whole industry.”

Of course, the UK is the world’s fifth largest economy with many talented people working in the logistics industry. It is entirely possible that the situation could improve. However, for that to happen, Boris Johnson and his cabinet will need to convince their critics that they are operating in the realms of reality.

After Years Of Covering Her Pointe Shoes In Makeup, 18-Year-Old Ballerina Finally Gets A Pair That Matches Her Skin Color

After Years Of Covering Her Pointe Shoes In Makeup, 18-Year-Old Ballerina Finally Gets A Pair That Matches Her Skin Color

Dance is one of the oldest forms of self-expression. In the middle ages, it could designate your status or suitability; later on, it became a form of entertainment. Dances themselves also represent various cultures, as many of them have their own traditional dances or moves. But at the same time, there are more universal dances, the kind that you would find all over the world—especially nowadays—that stand for the beauty of expression instead of deeper heritage.

And while that’s commendable, as dancing became a universal thing, another problem arose. Certain dances require certain equipment, and the said equipment can then be made to reflect the needs of one race of people while neglecting others. Sadly, ballet is one of the dances that has strict rules, particularly in the clothing dancers wear. That’s exactly the problem Kira Robinson faced—how to find a ballet shoes that reflect her skin tone without going through Herculean trials.

One of the signature items associated with ballet is the shoes. Each dancer has to perform while wearing pointe shoes. The tricky part is, they are usually meant for Caucasians, coming in white or pink (there are other colors too, but those usually correspond to specific costumes, so they are rare). And that’s why Kira Robinson, a 18-year-old ballet student at the University of Oklahoma, was overjoyed when she received pointe shoes that match her skin color. The video quickly went viral, with 440.2K likes and 1.4m views.

Robinson posted another celebratory video, showing off her new pointe shoes

After her video, she received a request from a follower to dance in the new shoes. And so she did! The video showcasing the pointe shoes was equally well-received, with people saying “This is [the] first time I’ve seen points in shades other than pink or white” and “I’m so glad they finally do ballet shoes in more shades, it’s ridiculous it took so long! These look stunning.” The color of the shoes is seemingly such a small thing, but it matters in the grand scheme of things, especially for communities that have been neglected.

POC dancers can now look forward to more representation from big companies

Robinson revealed the new shoes were a replacement for her old—pink—ones. She used to cover them with foundation so they would match her skin, but it’s undoubtedly a messy and long process. The reason for such measures was because ballet often requires a so-called ‘nude’ look, meaning your attire should match your complexion. And many dancers who don’t fit the perceived standard are left struggling. Suffolk—the company that designed Robinson’s brown shoes—is one of the companies that stepped up to provide the dancers with what they need.

Diversity and representation are very important, especially in the dance world

After her joyous video went viral, Robinson was invited to appear on Good Morning America. She said she has received a lot of support from people, but the comments on her TikTok all echoed the idea that representation in the dance world matters, but you don’t see it often. “Sometimes it’s frustrating and annoying, but it’s just how it is. The dance world is slow to accept POC dancers, and I’ve just had to deal with it and do what I need to do to perform.”

Recent global events have inspired change on a grander scale

According to the student, there was a major shift in the market due to Black Lives Matter movement. “A lot of people were fed up with companies’ lack of effort in diversifying their brand and it has taken a long time to see that change,” she said during the interview. “Many have signed and sent petitions to ballet brands to create more colors in their products, and Suffolk was one that heard our plea and started making those changes.”

Supportive comments were quick to follow

Australian Open: Naomi Osaka beats Jennifer Brady in women’s final

Australian Open: Naomi Osaka beats Jennifer Brady in women’s final

Naomi Osaka
Naomi Osaka will rise to second in the world rankings after winning the Australian Open

Japan’s Naomi Osaka cemented her place as the outstanding star of the women’s game by beating American Jennifer Brady in the Australian Open final to win her fourth Grand Slam title.

Osaka, 23, is unbeaten in major finals after a 6-4 6-3 win in Melbourne.

Osaka edged the first set when Brady, in her first Grand Slam final, paid for some glaring errors in the final game.

The third seed seized control from that point, racing 4-0 ahead in the second set before sealing a deserved victory.

Osaka has now won two Australian Open titles after also triumphing at Melbourne Park in 2019, with her other Grand Slam successes coming at the US Open in 2018 and 2020.

She has not suffered a defeat since February 2020 after victory over Brady was her 21st successive match win.

Osaka’s face lit up with a wide grin, raising her racquet above her head, when she clinched the title on her first match point after Brady looped a return long.

Around 7,500 fans were allowed to watch the final on Rod Laver Arena and Osaka lapped up the acclaim after her US Open victory came behind closed doors.

“It feels incredible to have fans, I played the last Grand Slam without fans, to have this energy means a lot,” said Osaka as she clutched the Daphne Akhurst Trophy.

“I feel like playing a Grand Slam is a privilege.”

Osaka is the first women’s player to win her first four Grand Slam finals since Monica Seles in 1991.

Osaka proves again why she is a ‘great champion’

Softly-spoken Osaka has emerged as the sport’s biggest star in recent times and illustrated that yet again with another Grand Slam victory.

On the court, her clean hitting and clear thinking has proved too much for her opponents to handle.

Off the court, she has grown into one of the world’s most marketable athletes and found her voice to become a prominent social activist.

“She is such a great champion,” said former British number one Laura Robson, an analyst on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“In the last six months she has found a purpose off the court but anything she does there never affects her on the court. That is the key.”

Osaka was the clear favourite in the final at Melbourne Park, although a relatively serene path to the final also featured moments where she showed her fight and spirit.

In the fourth round against 2020 runner-up Garbine Muguruza, Osaka had to see off two match points before going on to win, as well as coming through some tricky moments against 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams in the semi-finals.

While her level against Brady was not always at its highest, she still had enough quality in the key moments.

Naomi Osaka
Osaka struggled to land first serves and made 24 unforced errors, but won four of her five break points and saved two of Brady’s four chances

That was most evident at 5-4 in the first set when her relentless pressure forced Brady into the errors which proved pivotal.

And more brilliance enabled Osaka to make a fast start in the second set from which Brady could not recover.

A sweet cross-court backhand winner brought up more break points for a 2-0 lead, taking the first opportunity when another deep return bamboozled Brady into some clumsy footwork.

From that point, Osaka’s confidence further grew and she quickly went a double break up.

While Brady did claw one back, Osaka never looked like relinquishing another and served out the Championship to love.

The next question for Osaka will be whether she can transfer this hard-court dominance onto the clay and grass surfaces.

Success has not yet arrived at the French Open and Wimbledon, but her next ambition – once she has celebrated this success – will be trying to change that in the next few months and over the coming years.

Brady comes up short but hopes for ‘many more’ major finals

While it was not the outcome Brady wanted, the 25-year-old American has plenty of positives to build on after reaching her first Grand Slam final.

It was quite remarkable the 22nd seed even made the second week in Melbourne, having been the only singles player forced into a ‘hard’ quarantine on arrival in Australia to do so.

Stuck in her room for 14 days without leaving, the former college player had to hit balls against a mattress propped up against the wall, come up with inventive footwork drills and borrow an exercise bike and treadmill from Tennis Australia.

She also admitted to stopping watching Netflix so she would not “do anything other than lay in bed”.

Solid serving is the bedrock of her game and that helped her work her way through a kind draw where she did not face anyone inside the top 20 until Osaka.

Brady lost to Osaka when they met in a high-quality US Open final last September and suffered the same fate as she struggled to impose her service game.

The match swung away from Brady in that decisive 10th game of the opening set.

After having regained her fluency following a scrappy start, a double fault at 40-30 gave Osaka hope and Brady then got caught out by a return hitting the baseline to give Osaka a set point out of nowhere.

Brady planted an easy forehand into the net and, ultimately, that sloppy game cost her the match.

Groans from the crowd as Brady grimaced and shook her head reinforced the point.

“It wasn’t meant to be, but hopefully there’s many more,” said Brady, who will rise to 15th in the world after being outside the top 50 a year ago.

Dubai’s missing Princess Latifa is “being cared for at home”

Dubai’s missing Princess Latifa is “being cared for at home”

“In response to media reports regarding Sheikha Latifa, we want to thank those who have expressed concern for her wellbeing, despite the coverage which certainly is not reflective of the actual position,” the statement by her family said, according to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) embassy in London.

In secret recordings obtained by the BBC and shared with CNN, the daughter of Dubai’s billionaire ruler claimed she was being held hostage in a “villa converted into a jail” with no access to medical help.

The royal family’s statement falls short of demands from the United Nations and the United Kingdom that the UAE provide proof of life for the sheikha.

In the statement, her family said that, “Her Highness is being cared for at home, supported by her family and medical professionals.”

Dubai princess claims she is being held 'hostage' in secret video recordings

“She continues to improve and we are hopeful she will return to public life at the appropriate time,” it added.

Latifa’s family and close friends have set up a campaign with supporters and advisers named Free Latifa. Some human rights organizations, such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, support the campaign.

“Any truthful confirmation that Princess Latifa is safe and well is of course welcome. However, the statement today is reminiscent of those in 2018, 2019 and 2020,” the leaders of the campaign said in a statement on Friday.

“Statements that proved one thing, that the United Arab Emirates, its embassy in London and more specifically Latifa’s father the Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum simply cannot be trusted.”

The statement called on the UN and world leaders such as US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to step in and urge the UAE to release Latifa.

Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed Al Maktoum — the daughter of UAE Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum — was last seen publicly in March 2018 aboard a yacht off the coast of India, before a raid by Indian and Emirati forces took her back to Dubai, according to two people who had helped plan her escape.

It was her second failed attempt to flee abroad after she previously tried to leave the UAE in 2002 as a teenager.

In one of the video clips, Latifa says: “I’m a hostage. This villa has been converted into jail. All the windows are barred shut, I can’t open any window … I’ve been by myself, solitary confinement. No access to medical help, no trial, no charge, nothing.”

Latifa secretly recorded the videos herself on a mobile phone whilst hiding in a locked bathroom, according to the BBC. The documentary says that around a year after Latifa was taken back to Dubai, her friend Tiina Jauhiainen was contacted by someone who helped the pair secretly reconnect.

Jauhiainen managed to get a phone to Latifa and since then the princess has recorded many video messages “describing her captivity in a villa converted into a jail with its windows barred shut,” according to a BBC press release.

“BBC Panorama has independently verified the details of where Latifa was being held hostage. She was guarded by around 30 police, working on rotation, both inside and outside the villa. The location is just metres from the beach. It is not known if she is still there,” the press release says.

In another video shown in the documentary, Latifa says: “I have been here ever since, for more than a year in solitary confinement. No access to medical help, no trial, no charge, nothing … Every day I am worried about my safety and the police threaten me that I will never see the sun again. I am not safe here.”

CNN’s Caroline Faraj in Dubai, Mostafa Salem in Abu Dhabi and Sarah Dean in London contributed to this report.

Modern Problems Require Modern Solutions: 8 Y.O. Skips Online Classes For 3 Weeks Using A Zoom ‘Hack’

Modern Problems Require Modern Solutions: 8 Y.O. Skips Online Classes For 3 Weeks Using A Zoom ‘Hack’

Never underestimate the power of an 8-year-old. In fact, never underestimate the power of any kid. Period. While kids are like blank slates that are gradually filled up with information and skills, they often have one amazing advantage over us adults, and that is thinking outside the box, unrestricted by the cultural, social, and whatever other norms that frame the way we think.

If you do end up underestimating a kid, just brace yourself for impact as your kid might somehow end up finding a Zoom exploit and be deliberately milking it as much as possible to get out of school all the while driving you, your kid’s teacher, your friends, and your family bonkers as you try to figure out why Zoom refuses to work for her for weeks!

While physical classrooms today are mostly empty and unused, online classroom are full of eager students

Image credits: Christine Cowen (not the actual photo)

Well, OK, not all are eager, as explains this Twitter user in his story about how his 8-year-old niece found a Zoom exploit and used it to skip school

Meet Mike Piccolo, a software developer and entrepreneur from Sacramento, California who recently went to Twitter to share a story of how his 8-year-old niece was supposed to have Zoom classes, but kept running into some technical problems. Bored Panda got in touch with Piccolo for an interview about his Twitter thread.

In particular, said technical problems were the fact that she was constantly being logged out, and when she attempted to log back in, it would say that her password was incorrect. As soon as Zoom would stop working, Mike’s sister would jump in and help troubleshoot things. Each time she’d do so, there’d be no result, even after an hour or so of trying to fix it.

“At some point, my niece accidentally entered the wrong password a few times in Zoom. She then went and got my sister who tried to log her in and couldn’t get her back in right away so she got to skip class. My sister didn’t know that my niece accidentally entered the password incorrectly a bunch of times already which is what setup the scheme. In short, the first time was an accident but the light bulb clicked so she tried it again the next day,” explained Piccolo how it all started.

It starts with mysterious technical issues with Zoom—it logs the niece out mid-class and doesn’t let back in

After several tries (spanning across several days), the teacher was actively involved. After hours of trying to figure the mystery out, they decided to try doing the same thing from a friend’s house. Long story short, the same issue happened.

It didn’t stop there. Zoom support was also contacted, hours were spent figuring it all out, and yet again to no avail. Soon after the kid would log into a Zoom classroom, it would eventually log her out and refuse to let her log in.

This continues for days, and eventually involves the mom, the teacher, and even Zoom tech support

It became such a huge problem, lasting weeks, that the mom resorted to homeschooling

But, they wanted to try again with Zoom, and this time around the niece was caught slipping

Weeks later, Mike’s sister wasn’t even trying to do Zoom schooling any more; they reverted to the good old homeschooling method, which was impeccable, but surely not a long-term solution. So they tried again: the 8-year-old was sent back to the sister’s friend’s house because the whole logging out issue was less of an occurrence there.

Lo and behold, the 8-year-old runs into the same problem. Except, this time the friend happens to notice what went down—the kid logged out herself.

Turns out, the niece was logging herself out and abusing an exploit in Zoom to keep her logged out

When confronted about it, the young lady explained that it wasn’t working well, so she was trying to fix it by logging out. The friend was skeptical, and she actually caught on to the ruse, but was nonchalant and simply left the room.

Several spy sessions later, she figured out what was going on—the cat was out of the bag. Turns out, the 8-year-old figured out an exploit in the system and was using it to her advantage.

Said exploit involves entering the password loads of times until the account gets locked, except it doesn’t say that

See, whenever you try to log into Zoom and provide an incorrect password, there is a safety feature that locks the account. However, instead of saying “your account is locked” it says “incorrect password.”

And each time the account is locked this way, the lock period gets progressively longer. She has effectively found a way to stay out of school without raising suspicion that it was her doing.

Instead, the system blames the password—a mystery that took 8+ adults and 3 weeks to figure out

So, for a whole three weeks, Mike’s sister, her friend, the teacher, Zoom tech support, and others were being led on a magnificent journey of pain and torture trying to figure what was going on with the computer, when reality showed that it was all the doing of a very clever 8-year-old. Bravo! Despite all of this, Mike was pretty proud of her. As someone who works in the IT industry, why wouldn’t he be? This is, if anything, a quality assurance specialist in the making, and a talented one at that!

“Luckily for me, I am the uncle so I don’t have to worry about disciplining. Uncles get to be on the kids side. I talk with my sister about once a week, so I was getting updates on the issue before anyone figured it out. It was shocking to hear that it was my niece all along, but it was also incredibly impressive. She was able to pull off skipping school for weeks right under the noses of a bunch of adults who were trying to figure out the issue,” elaborated Piccolo.

“I work in the IT field, so her story reminded me of issues I see with user experience, quality assurance and security. Most people think hacking is deeply technical, but in most cases it is the combination of a defect or flaw in a system combined with some social component. In this case the social component was her innocence. ‘It can’t be the sweet eight year old girl’”

What the niece did was not good, sure, but Piccolo was proud of her—turns out she has a bright future as a quality assurance specialist at the very least

“She is a sweet girl, so she hasn’t done anything tricky since then. My sister did all of the things a good parent should have done here: grounding, no electronics outside of schoolwork, written apologies to everyone affected, etc.” explained Piccolo the aftermath of this ingenious prank. “They were both interviewed recently and they asked my niece if she was going to pull any more hyjinx and she answered ‘I don’t know, maybe’. My sister replied ‘What!!?!’ I guess we will have to wait and see.”

Mike’s tweets gained some traction on Twitter, and even found themselves on Imgur, where they were viewed over 130,000 times and gained over 4,400 upvotes. And yes, this surely came as a surprise to Mike: “The first day I sent out the tweet I think it got 5 likes. I was a little disappointed because I thought it would get a little more traction but I never thought it would get anywhere near the attention is has got by now. By day two it started getting shared at a steady pace and it was clear that it struck a nerve.”

“I think people are empathizing with my niece. She wants to go back to school, hang out with her friends and get attention from her mom. There is no doubt what she did was wrong, but it seems like a lot of people can see where the motivation was coming from. That and the fact that kids doing whatever they can to skip school is a tale as old as time.”

What are your thoughts on this? Have your kids come up with anything deviously genius like this? Let us know in the comment section below!

Venezuelan Women Lose Access to Contraception, and Control of Their Lives

Venezuelan Women Lose Access to Contraception, and Control of Their Lives

Not all abortions with misoprostol are this painful or risky. Doctors recommend that women take misoprostol with another drug, mifepristone, which prepares the body for the process, making the procedure easier.

But mifepristone is difficult to find in Venezuela, and so most women do it the hard way.

When Jessika came to, her friends urged her to go to the hospital.

“Don’t take me anywhere,” she said.

She was terrified of the police.

Afterward, she spent weeks replaying the events of the night.

“You say to yourself, ‘Well, this happened, but it could have been worse. It could have gone differently. I could have died in the process, but I didn’t, and it’s OK,’” she said.

“But it’s not OK,” she went on.

“It’s not OK that I had to have an abortion in a warehouse. It’s not OK that I passed out, that I became depressed, it’s not OK that I feel the way I do,” she said, words tumbling out in anger. “It’s not OK that the country pushes you into this desperation, that all it does it close its doors to you. I am resilient, yes. But at some point, all of us get tired. And I am tired. I am so tired.”

In the absence of other help, a few nonprofit organizations have become critical resources for women, offering low-cost or free contraception. Most are supported by international funds.

At the five clinics run by one of those organizations, Plafam, the waiting rooms are always packed. Women sometimes sleep outside, desperate to be among those who receive free birth control implants on distribution days.

People Share 30 Creepy Unexplainable Things That Happened To Them

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixSo this actually happened last week… It just took me some time to come to terms with it…

I got a phone call from my next door neighbour late in the evening asking if I can help him move a mattress into his upstairs. His mom is ill and has a big heavy sleep number bed. I of course ran over to help because they’re great neighbours.

I get over there and his friend, who is also a priest, was there to help. I helped them figure out how to separate the mattress from the bed so we could fit it up stairs. We get it all moved up and back in place when my neighbour asks if I can help them move an armoire upstairs too. I think nothing of it and we pull it out of his travel trailer and start bringing it up the front stairs of his house.

This is where I died. The front stairs are 11 steps. I was on the lower end of the armoire about 6 steps up when my neighbour and his friend lose a handle on the armoire and it comes crashing down on me and I fall backwards towards the pavement…

I then wake up in my dining room to my phone ringing and my wife asking me if I’m going to answer the phone. It’s my neighbour asking me if I can help move a bed upstairs for his mom…

I go over there and meet his priest friend again, as this has been the first time I met him. I say I can help with the bed but I cannot help with the armoire. My neighbour was like “how’d you know about the armoire?”. I then proceeded to tell them I’m pretty sure I just died.

I spent the next hour talking with the priest. He had so many questions. My neighbour didn’t believe it until I described the upstairs bedroom in perfect detail down to the metal mattress frame on the floor and the intricate headboard leaning against the wall and I had never been upstairs in their house before.

The priest asked me what I saw after I died. I told him I never actually died. Before it happened I woke up at my dining room table.

TL;DR… I experienced my death but woke up alive about 20 minutes earlier in my life.

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixMy mom and I were on the highway driving home, and there was a semi truck in the lane next to us. Suddenly the semi swerved in to our lane. Luckily my mom was able to get out of the way before it hit us, but soon after I began feeling strangely. The entire right side of my face felt hot and sticky, I tasted blood, and smelled the very pungent scent of gasoline. Then my head and right arm started to ache really badly, and I couldn’t feel my legs. Just as soon as the pain started to worsen, it went away, replaced with a cold eerie chill. I told my mom about this and she couldn’t come up with an explanation. I think I was feeling the pain in another timeline where my mom wasn’t able to avoid that semi.

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixSo I work for a joinery company and was delivering a load to a construction site about an hour away from work, and whenever I’m out and about, I just play reddit compilation videos through my headphones.

I was about 8 minutes into a video when in the middle of the town at a red light, with a bad feeling of deja vu. the video started buffering. I thought it was odd since I had good reception but was just going to wait it out. The light went green, and the video played just long enough to say the word “wait” and started buffering again. I couldn’t see anything at all, The road was clear, but I thought I’d listen, looked left, then right again and there was a massive semi at Speed that appeared out of nowhere and ran the red light. It would have taken out the drivers side of the cab, and I’d have been toast if I didn’t wait. Definitely reminded me of my own mortality.

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixMy mom died 13 years ago. About four years ago my dad was on vacation in Arizona with his girlfriend. He said he was up watching tv and the hotel phone rang. He answered it and said it was my moms voice saying “I’m ok” he said he said “Cass?” And he said the phone was crackly and said tell HEATHER (me) I am ok” he said his girlfriend was confused why the phone ring. He immediately called me even though it was late and he was crying. My dad doesn’t believe in the supernatural but still to this day can’t explain that call.

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixSo, this happened about seven or eight years ago. My husband and I were laying in the bed one night, watching television. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a child in the doorway of our bedroom. Thinking it was our only child at the time, I tapped my hubby and said “Hey, shhhh b look, but I think Connor is going to try to scare us ! He turns and looks and this child walked into our room. I can’t explain it, bc it was one of those moments that seemed … somehow different. We watched in silence, soon realizing that this child was NOT out son. He toddles in, head slightly tilted back, curls bouncing and diaper squish squishing as he goes to the end of our bed.. we see his head go down (like he was crouching) and when we got up to look- he was gone. I looked at chris (my husband) and said “ Did we just see a ghost?!” Then, almost as an after thought, I said “well, we know if we have another baby, and he has curls, that he was here before he was born.” We both laugh, bc We were not trying for another baby at the time. Fascinated, we go to check on our son, and he was fast asleep. A few months later.. I’m pregnant. (Surprise!) So fast forward aNd our new baby, Liam, is two. He toddles in the room, head titled slightly back and curls bouncing, and it hit me like a bucket of ice water.. holy crap, this is the baby that came to visit us! I mean, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind.. now, on top of that, whenever Liam is staying the night elsewhere (like with my parents) he comes to visit me in my sleep .. for example- one time he came and just smiled at me while I was taking a nap.. He was in a little red shirt, and his hair was cut short (he left with it long) the next day I go to pick the kiddos up from mom, and lo and behold- his hair is freshly shorn and he is wearing a little red shirt. I asked my mom “did he wear this yesterday?” And she replies “oh, yeah he did, but he insisted on wearing it today, so he is..”. So, I look at him and say “did you go see momma yesterday in mommas dreams” he just looked at me (he was four) all big blue eyes and serious, and nodded his head.

So that’s my glitch in the matrix story. One of many, but the most profound. Our son, I guess, travels astral, and even stopped to see us before he was born. I would know those curls anywhere. the fact that my husband witnessed it with me makes it even more weird, but utterly fascinating. Thanks for reading and forgive typos please ❤️❤️

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixThree days ago I was having conversation with my father and he was telling me about his university life. Basically my dad came from nothing, he had a very difficult up bringing and went to the worst school and high school in our city. When it was time for him to join university, my grandfather passed away leaving my dad to take care for the rest of the family as he was the oldest son. He took a wrong a major because of the wrong advices of the people and how he regrets that to this day. The courses were taught in English which is a second language for us and how he didn’t even know the language. My dad told me that it was the darkest times in his life and he just wanted to run away and was even thinking of taking his own life. Now very recently he got his masters in English literature and he was telling me that he didn’t think it would be ever possible for him. My dad just recently finished this degree at an age of 55.

The next morning my dad had to drive to this town because his distant relatives live there and they are struggling financially, my dad is very a kind soul and he wanted to help them . The town is 3 hours drive away. He usually takes public transport but didn’t because of recent crisis. He drove there and my mom was worried so we decided we will keep calling him after every hour to check. Well i decided to call him , now keep in mind because it’s highway network signals get very weak. He told me to wait and parked at a nearby restaurant it was like a check point for trucks. I don’t know what came over me but I started crying and went on to tell him how proud i was of him, i just babbled and kept saying that he shouldn’t think he is lacking because he is not. He was an amazing father and a great person to look up to.

You guys my dad started crying he told me that he will talk to me when he returns. Well he returned and he just hugged me and was telling me that how 30 years ago he was visiting the same town and it was the time when he was at his lowest. He was visiting the same relatives and he was in a bus which stopped at a petrol station. He called his mother and when he picked the phone without even dialling he heard my voice. It was me telling him the exact same thing which I just said yesterday. He said that he didn’t even called my grandmother, he just stood there and cried. It gave him strength to keep fighting. He said he just now realized it was me whose voice he heard.

My parents are now taking this as sign from God who helped my dad when he thought no one was there for him.

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixThis technically happened last night, but I was just starting a graveyard shift and am only now getting it all down.

I work at a gas station chain with only numbers in its name. We’re just outside of a large chunk of suburbs- none if that “middle of nowhere”, like we aren’t exactly near any other businesses but we are rarely completely dead for hours at a time.

It was just past midnight, and with everything going on in the US right now not a lot of things other than gas stations and bars are open at night anymore so it was a slower evening.

I was the only one in the store and a car pulled up to one if the 2 double-sided pumps out front. Pretty standard white four door. I’m not great with car brands but it was a little nicer, like upper middle class and probably only a few years old.

A woman gets out and starts walking towards our door like she’s in a daze. Legit this woman looked like she saw a ghost. She wanders up, sort of freezes at the door for a second with a thousand yard stare before opening it and coming in. She didn’t go looking for anything, didn’t start shopping, just sort of stood inside for what felt like ages.

Again, bars are still open so I think maybe she’s a little drunk or had a rough night or something so I give the usual “Welcome to ‘gas station’ let me know if you need any help finding anything” and she finally notices me and immediately asks me the weirdest damn question I have ever been asked on the job. “You can see me right?”

“Yeah”. Like what else do you say? She breaks down crying in the middle of my store so I’m already headed around the corner to see what’s up. I have my cellphone out incase I need to call the cops or something for her.

I get her to sit down on a nearby pallet of soda and I’m grabbing her a bottle of water and after she catches her breath a little she tells me “I thought I had died”. Again I’m thinking maybe she is on something but she’s a middle aged woman who looks like a standard local suburban housewife. We’re a pretty boring township without your average junkies like you’d find closer to the cities.

So she asks if she can call her husband to pick her up and wait with me. She has her own phone and does so, not really telling him anything either just where she is at and if he can come get her. He says he’ll call an uber and be there as soon as possible.

We’re waiting, so far nobody else has showed up, so I’m keeping most of my attention on her- and eventually she starts to explain to me-

“I was driving home from dinner with my coworkers and as I’m driving through (nearby intersection I recognized) a truck ran a redlight and hit me.” Now, her car is still at the pump without a scratch on it. She goes on to say she remembers her car being pushed into a pole, going airborne, and then nothing.

I tried to calm her down letting her know that her car is out front and it looks fine, but she insisted that she completely blacked out, woke up in an ambulance for a split second, passed out again, and then woke up again in the driver seat of her car- at the intersection waiting for the light to change, perfectly fine.

This whole thing freaked her out so badly that she drove to the nearest anything (us) just so she could get out of the car.

Husband eventually showed up to get her. He asked if I had any idea what happened and even though she sort of explained to me I just shrugged because no, I had no idea what was happening anymore. She reluctantly got into the passenger seat of the car and he drove them back home.

That was hours ago, after which I worked an entire shift at the station trying to wrap my head around what the absolute hell I had just witnessed.

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixAbout 30 seconds ago I was sitting on the couch, as my dog walked by to go sit on her bed we have behind the “L” part of the sectional. She had something small caught in her throat last night, I think a popcorn shell, so I was paying attention to her breathing just to make sure she got it out.

For a few minutes she was breathing fine, and then what sounded like a light snore started happening. This is semi-normal for her depending on what position she’s laying in, so I didn’t bother to go over and check on her. That went on for about 5 minutes, until the most disgusting(and to my now realization, terrifying) snore/cough/wheezing sound started happening. I go over to her to make sure she’s okay, and the exact moment I looked at her bed the sound stoped ‘mid-breath’ and she wasn’t there.

She was outside with my parents, had been for around 30 minutes. There’s no way to get out of the room without walking right past me. I don’t know who’s fucking dog I saw, and what was making that creepy ass sound 5 feet away from me, but I’m going to be staying outside for the rest of the day and hiring an exorcist.

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixI am a bit shocked.

I had a very good friend who crafted small jewellery and I have a few pieces from her. I got a pair of earrings more than 8 years ago and lost one of it after wearing them just a couple of times.

I always told her she had to craft a replacement but unfortunately she got very sick and died of cancer very quickly, she never had the chance to craft anything else.

I kept the single earring in a little box with some other small random memories and trinkets.

I am now moving to my own place and checking the memories in this little box, both earrings are there and I can’t explain when or how or why.

Probably in other universe my own me lost the unique earring she had.

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixI dropped my phone in the kitchen and I looked to grab it off of the floor but it wasn’t there. I heard it hit the floor but I couldn’t find it. It was in the middle of the room too, there was no way it could’ve gone more than 3 feet away from me. I checked under everything and went through the entire house looking for it but it was gone. I had my mom call my phone and it said that my line was disconnected. I checked the Find My IPhone app and it said it couldn’t find my phone because it couldn’t find a signal. That was 4 years ago, and we still haven’t found it. It’s like it hit the ground and immediately disappeared afterwards.

In some cases of ptsd selective amnesia happens.but that repressed memory can be triggered by related memory.but in this case i didn’t even recall her.i was agitated because i don’t remember her.

Till this day i don’t recall anything.according to family, we were close.i didn’t try to ask her family or any other people because it seems insensitive..

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixMy husband recently took an overnights job to help us out during covid. He’s only been there about two weeks and works evenings/overnights, 9pm-6am.

Last night was no different, he left home around 8:15pm. Our daughter, age 11, and I decided to make it a movie night. Around 11pm, I heard keys in my backdoor and the usual sounds my husband makes when he comes home. I creep out to the kitchen to make sure it was him, and it was. He told me he needed to grab his knee compression sleeve, walks down the hall, says hi to our daughter as he passes the living room, and goes upstairs. He came back down, gave me a kiss and left again.

We finished our movie and went to bed. In the morning when he got home I made a joking comment about him forgetting his knee sleeve. He was genuinely confused as I recalled the previous night. Our daughter confirmed everything I said and he still was acting confused. I pulled up our security motion camera on my phone to show him when he popped in quick. But there was no footage from the night before, or any other night, of him coming home after he’s left for work.

My daughter and I both heard him, saw him, and I touched him. But he was never home during that time. Nothing else out of the ordinary happened that night. We seriously have no idea what happened.

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixMe (M26) and my girlfriend (F25) have been living together in an apartment for two and a half years. Everything has been normal until quarantine started (around 4 weeks ago), when I started noticing some odd things.

For instance, for the last three weeks or so, my GF has been putting sugar in her morning coffee, while throughout our entire relationship she’s always been very much against it. It may seem like a small detail, but she’s always been complaining about how I don’t know what real coffee is since I put quite a lot of sugar. On the first day that I saw her drinking coffee with sugar I asked her why would she do that, and she looked at me weirded out and said something like “What are you talking about? I’ve always been putting sugar in my coffee”. I felt a bit confused for a moment but then we started talking about some other things, so I didn’t think anymore about it until the morning after, when she did the exactly same thing, and had once again the same reaction.

Fast forward a few days and another odd thing happened. We were having sex and she suddenly suggested a sex pose that we had already tried once, but it had gone wrong and it hurt her a lot so we had simply decided not to try it anymore. Naturally, I was very surprised with her suggestion, and reminded her about the time when it went wrong, and she just completely dismissed it, saying that i probably mixed her up with some ex-girlfriend or that I was just tripping. We then did the pose and we actually enjoyed it.

Today, the weirdest thing happened, which is the reason I’m writing this post. In the afternoon, I was working at home (I’m employed as a PhD student at the computer science department of a university), when my gf asked me what’s up with a guy who I’ve never heard of before. I asked her who is she referring to and she said “Well, it’s that colleague of yours who you always talk about, the one from the company where you are employed at”. I froze, and asked her to repeat, and she said the exactly same thing all over again. Then I told her that I don’t work at any company nor have I ever worked at any company, since I started a PhD straight after my Master degree. At this point, she also completely froze and we were just staring at each other completely confused and shocked for a few moments. She then asked me wtf is going on and I reminded her about the coffee thing and about the sex pose and that I don’t know anymore what is going on. At this point, she started crying too and asked what is wrong with us.

Nor she, nor me nor anyone in both families have ever had any mental problems in the past. We don’t know what to do about this.

Can anyone explain what’s wrong with us?

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixDo you guys know the whole theory about how when people die in one time line, they shift into another? I think that may have happened to me.

Back in early July of this year, my family (M45, F54, Me:19, B16), S(13) were going on a road trip to Montana to visit our grandparents. Prior to the trip, I had a horrible, horrible feeling about going. I kept having flashes of car accidents in my head, and I was sure that we were going to get in one if we left. It was so strange, because I have a pretty severe anxiety disorder, but this didn’t feel like my anxiety at all, and I never have anxiety about road trips: I love them!!

So we left Saturday of that week, I had told my parents I had a bad feeling about driving up there, but they dismissed me as being anxious, but I had never felt so certain about something in my life. Getting into that car felt like signing my death sentence. So we get about 6 hours in, and at this point, I start to think I was being ridiculous, and a wave of calmness just washes over me. This is where shit gets strange. My dad passes an underpass and everything just shifts. I feel like I saw everything in slow motion for a whole 4 or so minutes. My parents were joking beforehand, but their faces moved so slowly, and then the light in the car started to shift. This was the scary part because I thought I must have been going insane. For a few seconds, there was a huge illumination of light into our car, and I looked at my family, and could not tell who they were or what they meant to me. And then it’s like everything just came back. The light shifted back, and I knew who everyone was, but it felt like something imperceptible had changed.

I closed my eyes and tried to make sense of the past few minutes, and when I reached back to remember; I saw blood, our car and another minivan in shambles on the side of the highway right beyond the underpass, and mangled bodies. I remembered sensations I should not have known: what spattered brain matter looks like, the smell of something burning, the way I couldn’t breathe. But this never happened? Yet I remember that the car in front of us had switched lanes even though there was a truck in front of us, realized it at the last second, and hit us with a lateral impact.

I have no history of psychosis, and I have never been in any sort of car accident. This wasn’t PTSD, and I have never had anxiety over being in the car in any sort of way prior to this. And maybe I could have just brushed it off, but I still think about it when I’m driving in my own car. And it’s made me a more cautious driver. I don’t know what happened, it was just a weird situation, and I remember having the distinct feeling in that moment that I had died in some sense. I am not a spiritually sensitive person by any means, I am a scientist at heart, but this truly was something I cannot explain. And I fully accept that I might be reading to much into this, and for some reason, I imagined an event that never happened, but I thought I would share anyway.

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixThis is my first post, so bear with me, but after reading many other glitch stories, I wanted to share mine here.

In early December 2015, my now ex-boyfriend’s mother passed away in the home following surgery and other health problems related to her heart (she was born with a rare condition). Unfortunately she went into cardiac arrest and we were unable to save her, so the event in and of itself was extremely traumatic and unexpected.

A couple of nights later, we decided to go see some friends who wanted to offer their condolences to my ex; everyone loved his mom. We were all sitting in our friends’ living room watching tv and, to be honest, they were really trying to distract us from everything.

One friend was just being her goofy self and I was taking Snapchat videos and I DISTINCTLY remember taking a video of (let’s call her) Amy… I saved the video, but when I looked at my screen to watch it, it was not Amy…. it was a grainy video with a background that appeared to be outside and 100000% not in a living room, but on the screen was my ex’s mom…

She said the words, “I’m okay baby. I’m okay” and multiple other friends saw it on my phone before it disappeared. She looked young and vibrant and has a huge smile on her face. Someone had tossed my phone to another friend across the couch to see and the video then disappeared. When we watched the original video back immediately after, my ex’s mom was gone. It was Amy in the video again just like I saw it while recording it in the first place.

My ex and his mom had a very close relationship, best friends really, so when we saw her on my screen letting him know she was okay… it was astounding.

I saw it first and everyone noticed i was visibly upset. I cannot imagine what went through my ex’s mind and heart when he saw that, but to this day, it’s something we talk about and something he shares with new friends… something we simply cannot explain other than her coming thru in a glitch to let us know she was okay.

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixSo mobile alert . This happened two days ago.

I was at my home because of quarantine and according to me i was sleeping.

When i woke up my mom was looking at me having a very shocked and worried expression and tears in her eyes. She asked me where the hell i was and i said that i was sleeping right here in my bed. She didn’t believe me said she checked and i wasn’t there.

So apparently, my family woke up in the morning and i didn’t come for breakfast, my dad came into my room and just saw the blanket and pillow (i do sleep with blanket on face). Then my mom came to wake me up and took the blanket off no one was there . Then she panicked and told my dad. They searched the entire house and tried calling me nothing worked. Then they asked the neighbours if they had seen me leaving but neighbours couldn’t help as well. My mom was very afraid at that point and they called the police and that’s when my dad had went to file the report and i woke up.

We called my dad and told him i was back and he wanted an explanation and I couldn’t give one. I said i was just sleeping and then i woke up and this whole thing has happened.

I wanted to make it clear that i do sleep with blanket covering my entire body and my mom did made it clear that she took the blanket off and no one was there. We all are very shaken rn.

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixI live in a very small town. We have a small grocery store, hardware store, you know the drill. I was done getting groceries and hopped in my car to head home. As I pulled up to the end of the driveway of the store, blinker on to get onto the main road, I see a big, white, lifted Chevy pickup driving toward me that I need to wait for. I watch it as drives closer to me, remarking to myself that it looks so similar to my husband’s, just older and rusted around the edges. It even has the same black emblem and large iron cross bumper. As the truck goes past me my jaw nearly fell open. Staring at me intently was a man almost identical to my husband… but with a longer, greying beard, and grey hair around the ears. I quickly gathered myself together and pulled out behind the truck and up to the stop sign that followed. He was staring at me still in his side mirror. Glancing away and then staring at me again. He took off like a shot the first chance he got, and I tried to follow to see which direction he took, but a car was coming and I couldn’t get out behind him in time. The truck sped off toward my road, but I don’t know if he turned in that direction or not.

I know that’s a little crazy, but I couldn’t help feeling the total connection I feel with my husband when I saw his reflection in that side mirror staring at me. It gives me goosebumps to think about it because it was like he knew that I was me, and I was the wrong age, and that he needed to get out of there before i could follow. I got home and my husband was there, working in his woodshop. I told him about it and he chuckled and asked if he looked hot when he was old. I mean…. he did if it was really him!

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixLet me preface this by saying there has always been creepy shit happening around me and I have several stories of my Dad’s old house which myself and my siblings all agree is haunted as fuck. I also had my dead best friend visit me twice which was nice.

So this evening, my partner (42 M) and I (30 F) were upstairs sorting laundry, when his daughter (17) called us downstairs as dinner was ready.

I was heading down the stairs, my partner right behind me, literally two steps behind me.

He did his usual thing of tickling the back of my neck as we walked.

The bottom of our stairs is wooden so you can hear when somebody steps onto it from the carpeted stairs. When we got to the bottom, my feet hit the floor as usual. I turned to ask him something and he wasn’t there.

He wasn’t fucking there.

I totally froze for a second and looked up the stairs and there he was. On the top step, pale and shaking.

Asked him what the fuck just happened and he kept saying

“I don’t know, I don’t know, I was behind you and before I hit the bottom, the next step took me back upstairs!”

We are very freaked out. Didn’t say shit to our girl as she is already leery of this stuff although he and I are somewhat used to it.

I am trying to get the courage to leave my laptop recording audio overnight because there definitely is SOMETHING weird happening.

EDITED TO ADD

I was JUST talking to my partner about the jump while we were cleaning our bedroom and the second he made a joke about “Spooks A-Poppin'” our bedroom door and bathroom door just slammed shut one after the other.

I’m chalking it up to our bedroom window being open a crack…I don’t want to think of alternatives.

FURTHER UPDATE

To the people messaging me saying my relationship is “yikes” and to join certain subs (Female Dating Strategy) I appreciate the concern.

To the other eejit who messaged calling my partner a sexual deviant, kindly relax and focus in your own relationship, if you have one. We are together 11years. I’m second Mom to the kids.

Not every relationship with an age gap is abusive. Not every relationship with an age gap is coercive.

I love him and the kids more than anything, and I would DO anything for my family.

So please, I appreciate the concern, but don’t assume he is abusive or that I was “groomed” as one lovely person messaged.

And finally, to the person who asked me why I would want to be “fake Mom” to his kids- I’m sorry that’s how you view my life from this one small snippet I posted and I hope you are content in your own life.

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixBack story, this is important later: for about 9 months or so I was planning to move to California last September. Plans fell through do to financial reasons and other opportunities had come my way.

This happened to me while I was at work closing, so I was completely alone. A customer came in, he was maybe in his early 60’s (I’m 21). I wouldn’t say he looked like me, But he was definitely dressed similar to me, and that’s how I’d expect myself to dress at that age. Kinda old man surfy SoCal vibes. But this guy says “man I need some caffeine, I know it’s late but I’ve been consuming that stuff daily since I was a little kid.” I told him “ME TOO! Since I was about 8 I started drinking coffee” which is a fact about me. This guy continues to talk about how he loves the music I was playing in the store, etc. Then out of the blue this guy says “so I have to ask, why’d you choose not to move to California?”…. I did not mention California to this man at all, I have never met this man, I don’t know who he is or how he knew. None of my coworkers, or really anyone beside my family knew about my plans for California. I served him his drink, and as he walked out he said “you’ll go, maybe not now, but you love that place”… Again, I never spoke about California to him, but he knew I was planning to move there and he knew I loved that place. He walked out and I have not seen him since. I asked my parents and anyone who knew about my plans if they had told anyone, more specifically an older man. They all said no per my request to keep it on the down low. To this day I am still in awe.

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixThis just happened, and my heart is still beating like crazy.

I was chilling on the couch, scrolling through instagram, when I heard my cat jumping down from his bed. He usually wants to go outside after sleeping, so I looked at him and said «you wanna go outside, buddy?» with my annoying cat-voice. He just looked at me, not answering, like a normal cat. I was ready to go let him out, but looked back at my phone for just a second. That’s when it hit me. I let him outside a few hours ago. I turned my head to look back at him in confusion, but he wasnt there.

I went to the front door, and yep, he was outside and came running when I opened the door. I have no idea what just happened

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixFor a bit of context, my eyesight is horrible, even half a foot in front of my face is nothing but blurry color. Yesterday my mom and brother picked me up to go to an appointment. I was running a little late, so didn’t have time to put my contacts in/ do my makeup and was getting ready on the drive.

So while mom was driving I was in the passenger seat with the mirror down. I took off my glasses to apply my eyeshadow. My brother, who was sitting behind me, asked me a question and I turned to look back at him. When I turned my head back around, I quickly finished my eyeshadow and shut the mirror.

I was looking out my window at the farmland just off the road and thinking how beautiful it was when I suddenly realized that I hadn’t put my glasses back on, they were sitting on the dashboard. As soon as I had the realization, my perfect vision went back to being just blurred colors. It was instant, like flipping a switch on my sight. It was so shocking that I yelled “Holy shit!”

My outburst startled my mom and brother, so I told them what had just happened and they said they believed me but couldn’t think of a rational reason for it. We tried to figure it out for the rest of the drive but honestly couldn’t. Tbh, if there’s some secret to magically fixing my eyesight that I accidentally stumbled upon, then I wish I could find it again!

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixThis is only a small thing, but it still confuses the hell out of me and I can’t think of any explanation.

I was playing fetch with my dog in my living room. I threw the ball, she’d bring it back, you get it. My dog dropped the ball on my foot and waited whilst I leant down to pick it up, but then I blinked and it was gone.

I quickly checked under the sofa, thinking she’d nudged it under there or I’d accidentally kicked it, but it was nowhere to be seen. My dog was still staring at the spot where she dropped it and when it disappeared she looked just as confused as I was and jumped round looking for it.

I scoured the whole room (which wasn’t very big) and eventually found it on the opposite side of the room in the middle of the floor, even after I’d looked everywhere. We only had this one particular ball at the time, so we couldn’t have mistaken it for another one.

Not particularly exciting, but I can’t think of any explanation. My dog was just happy to have her ball back at least.

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixThis happened a few days ago. My husband and I were at home, neither of us were intoxicated etc, just a normal evening. For reference, I’m 5’8″ and my husband is 5’7″; we’ve been together for years and know very well what the other looks like head on. I had gone to the kitchen to make a sandwich, and something felt off. I wasn’t sure what until my husband asked if I was taller than usual. I was flat footed and barefoot, but realized my viewpoint was as if I was on my tiptoes – I could see the top of the fridge, and my hips were above the kitchen counter. I turned to face my husband and he seemed much shorter to me than usual; our eyes are usually pretty close to even but they seemed much lower than mine. He says he felt like his height didn’t change at all, just mine.

Understandably, we were both freaked out and were wandering around our apartment trying to figure out what was going on. Suddenly, everything felt right again and I returned to the kitchen; I could no longer see the top of the fridge and the counter was back even with my hips. My husband returned, and both of us looked “right” again to the other. It was like once we couldn’t see each other anymore, it fixed itself.

I’ve heard of alice in wonderland syndrome before, but for it to happen where someone else can see it seems impossible. Has anyone else experienced anything like this or have any ideas?

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixVisited my BF’s parents in a city where I had never been before. We sat around in the kitchen talking and then his mother asked me to get her her scissors. I got up, went to the guest room dresser, opened the second drawer and got them out. There was no way I could have known where they were.

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixWe were all completely sober , quick preface.

I’m currently driving home from my lunch break so I’m using Siri to talk hopefully this makes sense. So back in the summer we had a huge friend trip to Lake Powell. For anyone that has been there you know it’s absolutely beautiful, anyways we were boating through the canyons and going deeper and deeper into the canyons lake Powell.

At one point I thought in my mind something along the lines of “damn, this place is so beautiful it almost looks fake or like it was designed to look this way by something” when I started saying that in my mind, a friend turned around to me and said “dude, it feels like we’re in a movie and we are looking at movie props, it looks so fake” and I turned around and looked and and said “dude what the fuck did you just say? I was thinking the EXACT SAME THING.”

We were both freaking out about it but then it got a little freakier. We were sitting at the back of the boat looking at our 10 or so friends standing up while the boat was slowly going through the canyons, and as I watched them looking at the scenery I experienced an altered state of conscience. The best way to describe it is the façade of the human experience was dropped and all of a sudden my friends looked like gods or angelic beings experiencing “earth” and just enjoying the moment.

My friend turned to me and said, “dude, look at our friends, they’re so beautiful and alive, they look like angels!” And I knew at that moment we were both experiencing the same thing.

The best way to describe what we saw, is it looked like we placed ourselves in a video game and were enjoying what we created. It’s super hard to describe this experience. If you’ve seen maze runner, you know how they make you forget everything before you go into the maze but yet you had an existence before? It felt like that! That nature of reality teased us and slightly withdrew, and we saw our friends and this earth for what it could truly be for a brief moment in time

EDIT #1. I heard a story of a man who experienced something similar where at random times he also would “tap in” to this outside reality whilst being sober. He came up with a theory that human consciousness and our Brains can act like a Needle finding the groove on a vinyl record. Once we tune it specifically and find ourselves in this “groove” music can be played, or in other words, we can start experiencing some fascinating things. I have to find where I read this though, but supposedly it happens randomly to a lot of people!

Half an hour later, I remembered I wouldn’t be going out anytime soon again so I decided to buy more water, and everything happened in the exact same order, I parked at the same spot, entered, bought a 6pack, register 2 is free, same girl working there, I even paid with same amount of change coins. She looked at me with a bit of horror and confusion but couldn’t see me smiling under my mask.

As I’m eating cheese sticks I hear a crackling of the kitchen floor but I don’t hear anyone moving around. I keep eating and a few moments later I swear my dog was just at the side of the table begging for food, now when we got this dog from the pound she was BIG, we had to slim her down we used to call her “Keg” but every Christmas I would give her a little bit of what I’m eating just a little “gift”.

I think she showed up this Christmas 🙂 I’m still in shock because it was so vivid but I’m happy.

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixThis has to be the strangest thing to ever happen to me, I discovered it a few months ago and it’s played on my mind because I have a lot of health problems too.

Last year my dad passed away, we visit the graveyard quite often and go to various family members graves.

It’s a Muslim Grave yard, so they usually have the fathers name and other details on the gravestones.

Near my uncles grave, the one just in front of it has my name on it, my name is spelt a little differently to the common spelling, it was exactly like mine on the gravestone, first and last names.

It’s got the same birth date as me.

To add to the strangeness, My dad (who also has an uncommon spelling to his name) was from a small village in Kashmir. On the grave it has the name of the persons father, my dads name with the uncommon spelling.

On the gravestone is stated that the father is from a village, guess where the person’s father was from? Yep, the same village.

It’s really weirded me out, I know people from that village and contacted them to see if anyone heard of this person other then my dad, no one seems to have heard of him.

Unexplained-Glitches-MatrixIt’s the weirdest shit. I was going through my photos and deleting some pictures for the sake of space and every so often I’ll come across a pic of me with that shirt on. Then I’d go “I loved that shirt what happened to it?”

It’s impossible that I left it somewhere in public and forgot to take it home because this happens to tshirts and long shirts! I don’t recall a single moment I’ve taken my shirt off in public forgetting i that I left the house with clothes on and just go home without a shirt, that would be ridiculous!
