Unexpected Game Could Knock Portal 2 from Its Top Spot on Steam
Highlights Portal 2 is currently the highest-rated game on Steam, praised for its humor, engaging narrative, and clever puzzle design with a rating of 97.71%. People Playground is a popular indie game that is close to overtaking Portal 2’s top spot, earning an impressive 97.51% rating on Steam. Several other games have cracked the 97% mark, including Vampire Survivors, Stardew Valley, Hades, the original Portal, and Terraria, making the top 10 highest-rated Steam games list quite competitive.
Portal 2 is currently the highest-rated game on Steam, but it’s in danger of losing its top spot to popular indie game People Playground. Portal 2 first released in 2011 to rave reviews from critics and is often cited as one of the absolute best video games of all time.
Portal 2 stars the unlucky test subject Chell, who once again finds herself at the mercy of the malicious GLaDOS. Like in the original Portal game, Chell is tasked with completing a variety of increasingly-difficult and dangerous puzzles using the iconic Portal Gun. Praised for its humor, engaging narrative, and clever puzzle design, it’s really no surprise that Portal 2 is the highest-rated game on Steam with an impressive 97.71% overall rating.
However, Portal 2 may not hold its top spot on Steam forever, as People Playground is within striking distance of Valve’s first-person puzzler. For those unfamiliar with it, People Playground is a sandbox game where players are free to decimate ragdolls using a variety of deadly tools. First released in 2019, People Playground has amassed nearly 200,000 positive reviews on Steam since launch, earning an incredible 97.51% rating on the platform.

People Playground stands the best shot at eventually overtaking Portal 2 as Steam’s highest-rated game, but there are a handful of other titles that could realistically take the top spot at some point down the line. In fact, six other games have cracked 97% so far, with Vampire Survivors, Stardew Valley, Hades, the original Portal, and Terraria all earning that distinction. Now, it’s entirely possible that none of these games will ever knock Portal 2 off the throne, but it will definitely be interesting to see how the top 10 fluctuate over time.
The other three games that make up the top 10 highest-rated Steam games are Rimworld, VR game Half-Life: Alyx, and Left 4 Dead 2. There are multiple games in the top 10 highest-rated Steam games list that are relatively new releases, so it’s also entirely possible that a brand-new game will launch and find itself at the top of the charts. If Valve were to ever release a Half-Life 3 and it actually lived up to the hype, one has to imagine that it would stand a good chance at taking the top spot.
