Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Offering Free Access Period for Limited Time

Highlights Gamers can try out Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer suite for free for one week, giving them a taste of the game’s new maps and modes. The free access period runs from September 13 to September 20. Players will have access to 12 Modern Warfare 2 maps, including the latest additions from Season 5, as well as 11 different modes to play. This free access period may be a strategic move by Call of Duty to attract new players before the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in November, and all Modern Warfare 2 weapons and operator skins will carry over to the new game. Keep an eye out for the Season 6 unveiling soon.

Gamers will have an opportunity to give Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s Season 5 Reloaded multiplayer suite a shot with one week of free access starting on September 13. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare reboot, was released last fall to solid reception. Since then, developer Infinity Ward has been steadily updating the game with several seasons of new maps, modes, and more.

After Season 4 of Modern Warfare 2 brought the Vondel map to Warzone, Season 5 shook up the multiplayer suite with the addition of three new 6v6 maps, two new Gunfight maps, the new Havoc party mode, and lots more. Additionally, Phillip Graves from the game’s campaign made his multiplayer debut alongside hip-hop legends Snoop Dogg, Nicki Minaj, and 21 Savage, who were added to the game as part of a 50-year celebration of hip-hop. Most recently, the mid-season Reload brought gaming icon Lara Croft into Modern Warfare 2 as an operator, as well as added various other new modes to hold players over until Season 6.

With Season 5 approaching its end and Modern Warfare 3 right around the corner, Call of Duty has announced that it’s making Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer suite available to try out for free for a limited time. The free access period begins on September 13 and ends on September 20, giving gamers one week to delve into Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer modes. However, players accessing the game for free will be limited to just 2.5 hours of in-match playtime.

Though the allotted time may be short, players will gain access to 12 Modern Warfare 2 maps, including the newest Season 5 additions Punta Mar and Strike, as well as 11 modes across the Core, Battle Map, and Party categories. Call of Duty’s blog post made no mention of which weapons will be made available for the free event, so it’s currently unknown whether players will be able to access the whole arsenal or perhaps a set of predetermined loadouts.

This free access period could be a smart way for Call of Duty to get new players in the door ahead of the imminent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 launching in November. Additionally, the message that all Modern Warfare 2 weapons and operator skins will be carried over to the new game has been nailed home by Call of Duty. As for the remainder of Modern Warfare 2’s support cycle, a sixth season is expected to begin later this month and will likely be the title’s last. Fans of the multiplayer shooter should keep an eye out for the Season 6 unveiling in the coming days and weeks.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
