Associate Professorship (or Professorship) in Twentieth-Century North American History

Combined University and College salary in the range £48,144 – £64,605 p.a. plus additional benefits as detailed below including a Housing Allowance of £9,829. Additional salary of £2,700 p.a. if awarded the title of Professor.

We are seeking a highly motivated, inspirational person to join our thriving academic communities of historians, both in the University and in the College, and bring exciting perspectives to the teaching and study of North American History. North American History is a flourishing area of study in Oxford, with a team of six colleagues, headed by the Rhodes Professor of American History, Pekka Hämäläinen, and the Edward Orsborn Professor of US Politics and Political History, Adam Smith. As part of this team, you will have the opportunity to develop courses for both undergraduate and graduate students and the freedom to develop your own research ideas and projects, working with colleagues across the University and beyond. In the College, you will complete a team of three historians, alongside an early modern Europeanist (Howard Hotson), and a British & European modernist (Peter Ghosh), and play a full part in the teaching of History at undergraduate level. You will also take part in the life of the interdisciplinary Rothermere American Institute, which brings together historians and political scientists with literary scholars, and be able to draw on the resources of the Vere Harmsworth Library, probably the strongest collection of resources for US History in the United Kingdom.

The post arises from the resignation of Gareth Davies, and we are looking for someone who can build on his legacy, add something distinctive to our American History team and engage in developing a strategic vision for the future of United States history at Oxford. We seek a person with expertise in any aspect of twentieth-century North American History, provided that it includes a research knowledge of the United States. We welcome historians whose work explores borderlands or transnational connections, including with the Caribbean. We also welcome historians who work on women’s and gender history and would especially like to encourage applications from women and people of colour, who are historically under-represented in Oxford.

This post is an exciting and demanding one in which you will conduct advanced research; give lectures, classes and tutorials; supervise, support and examine students at the undergraduate and graduate levels; and play a part in the administrative work of the History Faculty and St Anne’s College, where, as a tutorial fellow, you will help to manage a lively group of undergraduate and postgraduate historians. The University of Oxford uses the grade of associate professor for most of its senior academic appointments. Associate professors are eligible for consideration through regular recognition of distinction exercises for award of the title of full professor.

The appointee will be a member of the Faculty of History, and a tutorial fellow of St Anne’s College. The post is full-time, tenable from 1 September 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. The contract is for five years in the first instance, then reappointment to retirement upon completion of a successful review.

The postholder will be required to hold a doctorate and an internationally recognisable academic and research track record within the field of North American history in the Twentieth Century, including a research knowledge of the United States, appropriate to the career stage and individual circumstances.

Queries about the post should be addressed to the Chair of the History Faculty Board, Professor John Watts (email: john.watts or telephone: +44 (0) 1865 615005) or the Senior Tutor of St Anne’s College, Dr Shannon McKellar (email: Shannon.mckellar st-?″ target=”_blank” rel=”nofollow”> or telephone: +44 (0) 1865 274858).

All enquiries will be treated in strict confidence; they will not form part of the selection decision.

The deadline for applications is 12 noon (UK time) on Friday 19th March 2021 . Interviews are expected to take place in April/May 2021, and may be online.
