Job description: JOB SUMMARY

This position is an Exempt position. Annually is: $45,901.54 – $ 58,524.05 doq.

This is technical work in the operation of a municipal water/wastewater reclamation treatment plant and auxiliary facilities on assigned shift. Incumbent assists the Chief Treatment Plant Operator with the supervision and management of available resources and projects to provide effective, efficient plant operation. Assignments are received orally and in writing. All work is performed under the general direction of the Chief Treatment Plant Operator.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

Assists the Chief Treatment Plant Operator with daily operation of a water or wastewater treatment plant.

Operates plant equipment to process waste and/or wastewater on an assigned shift. Provides shift coverage on an as-needed basis. Regulates and adjusts machinery to feed proper amounts of chemicals.

Assists with training of personnel on facility process control, operational protocols, equipment operation procedures and standard safety practices. Determines operational status of equipment requests and coordinates necessary electrical, mechanical and instrumentation repairs.

Assists with the preparation of plant records and reports to insure that legal documentation of the plant operations are correctly maintained for regulatory inspections and review. Inspects plant log records, gauges, meters and other plant testing and measuring devices to insure that equipment is calibrated and functioning properly. Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment for proper facility operation.

Assists with the evaluation of team member performance

Mixes and adds chemicals according to prescribed standards. Takes samples of water and/or wastewater for laboratory tests and analyses. Performs routine analyses as needed.

Performs minor maintenance repairs to pumps, purification equipment, other machinery and facilities. Performs routine custodial and maintenance duties at facility.

Acts as Chief Treatment Plant Operator during their absence.
Monitors telephone and radio; responds to or routes citizen complaints.

Performs other duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:

  • Must have a combination of knowledge and experience with the complex principles, practices and techniques of water/wastewater treatment plant operations.
  • Must have a combination of knowledge and experience with treatment plant equipment, computer systems, SCADA and related operational requirements of a complex treatment plant and distribution system.
  • Must have a combination of knowledge and experience with laboratory techniques and procedures as related to water/wastewater treatment and analysis.
  • Must have a combination of knowledge and experience with occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions.
  • Must have the ability to develop and conduct operators training.
  • Must have a working knowledge of applicable Florida Department of Environmental Protection regulations.
  • Must have the ability to analyze technical problems and to exercise independent judgment in arriving at conclusions.
  • Must have the ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

High school graduate or equivalent diploma is required. Must possess State of Florida Class “A” Certified Water or Wastewater Operator’s License or ability to obtain same within one year.

Prefer two to four years of progressively responsible experience in water/wastewater field. A combination of education and experience may be considered.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s license. Must possess a State of Florida “A” Certified Water or Wastewater Operators license or ability to obtain the same within one year. Must have the ability to respond to off-duty calls within 30 minutes. Work schedule may include odd workweek. Subject to emergency call-out during off-duty hours and on weekends as required.

During occasions of local emergencies this position may be required to report to perform emergency tasks, which may result in extended work hours as well as extended periods of time away from family members. The Incident Commander and the employee’s Department Head will make the determination as to who will be required to work.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds; bending stooping, pulling, climbing and working in all types of weather, i.e. heat, cold, rain, etc.

Ability to read printed material and hear sound. Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, spectrophotometers, pH meters, color meters, centrifuges, CL2 analyzers, turbidity meters, gas detectors, composite samplers, pressure washers, lawn mowers, etc. Must be physically able to operate motor vehicles. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds for force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force consistently to move objects. Requires frequent reaching, kneeling, lifting and climbing. Physical demand requirements are for Heavy Work.

Expected salary: $22.07 – 28.14 per hour
