“Personally, I don’t understand why you keep bringing the pure core of the Vietnamese nation into hip-hop. What is supposed to be the most traditional and quintessential Ao Dai should not be expressed in this form! Art will be beautiful! if we put it in the right place.”
“If you wear a hip-hop ao dai, it’s not very appropriate, but that doesn’t mean you’re criticized, because it’s not in the moral category.”
“For young people these days, the Ao Dai is just an outfit worn over the skin like many other lovers. It looks quite ridiculous, too offensive.”
Before these images, designer Song Toan specializes in ao dai with a view to expressing his views. I said: “First of all, I find it quite interesting with your creative idea of combining traditional Ao Dai and street hip-hop art. However, the set of photos is not sophisticated so it may be offensive to viewers You have ideas but the implementation is not subtle enough, if you still want to combine these two elements together, there are two ways to make viewers less offensive.
Firstly, you can wear a traditional ao dai but perform gentler, less offensive hip-hop movements. Secondly, you can perform the powerful movements of hip-hop but will wear innovative ao dai, suitable for the powerful movements of this street art. It’s not like a schoolboy’s white ao dai makes such uncharacteristic and offensive moves.” – Designer Song Toan suggested other costumes to avoid offensive.
Ao Dai is the school uniform of many schools in Vietnam. Not only is it highly aesthetic, but wearing Ao Dai is a way to transmit the beauty of traditional culture from ancient times. Ao dai is often associated with a gentle, feminine image and elegant beauty of a girl. Therefore, creations that exceed the limits of those associated with “traditional” will be reacted. And the story, the girl in white ao dai dancing hip-hop, creating many cool poses, perhaps also exceeds the limit of cultural beauty standards.
